To think naming a new baby Gypsy will give her a life long affliction.

Having been saddled with an unusal Christian name myself I must ask this question.

OP posts:
JemimaMop · 16/06/2011 13:11

Only if her surname is Cream. And she has a brother called Custard.

thegruffalosma · 16/06/2011 13:11

Are you talking about the fact that racism towards gypsies is pretty much accepted and you think people might relate the name to that or just the fact it's not a common name?
I have quite an uncommon name and it's never caused me any probs.
There was a Gypsy in Home and Away when I was younger but I've never heard it used as a name other than that.
Is it a friends chosen baby name or something?

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2011 13:12

ooh i like it, reminds me of the fleetwood mac song

ashamedandconfused · 16/06/2011 13:14

Gypsy = bad idea
Roma/Romany = pretty name

muffinflop · 16/06/2011 13:14

I love it personally. Have heard lots worse

MMQC · 16/06/2011 13:15

We used to have a cat called Gypsy. Never worried her.

HowlingBitch · 16/06/2011 13:18

Is this some clever ploy to lure Beesimo back? Hmm

IDrinkFromTheirSkulls · 16/06/2011 13:19

Just makes me think of Gypsy Rose Lee...or more accurately her mum Grin

ByTheBeardOfZeus · 16/06/2011 13:26

I know a girl called Romany who is actually a Romany Gypsy. I can see there might be an argument for not calling someone Gypsy though, not only because unfortunately some people hold prejudices against them but because by the same logic you could call a child "African American" or "Eurasian". It's just a bit odd.

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2011 13:31

except Gypsy sounds like a name "African American" would just be silly :o

JenniL1977 · 16/06/2011 13:33

I had a dog called Gypsy. She suited it. Not sure about a child though...

farewellfigure · 16/06/2011 13:33

It's a lovely name. Our childminder's dog is called Gypsy. Nuff said.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 16/06/2011 13:36

It's suitable only for a pesky hamster.

Honeydragon · 16/06/2011 13:38

What name is suitable for a pleasant non pesky hamster then Pinot?

Pumpernickel10 · 16/06/2011 13:48

Beesimo Beesimo where are you?

Pumpernickel10 · 16/06/2011 13:49

My hamster is called pumpernickel

LadyFlumpalot · 16/06/2011 13:52

My hamster was called Fergal in polite company.

If it was just us lot he was referred to as Dozy Bollocks.

Kallista · 16/06/2011 13:53

A very bad choice of name. So is Romany.
At school the gypsy kids would be insulted, and as for the other kids...Unless the girl was very popular she would face a future at school and work of nicknames like pky and cckr.
That is the reality.

bigbuttons · 16/06/2011 13:55

It's a rubbish name and would be asking for trouble

ariadneoliver · 16/06/2011 13:56

I only know one Gypsy, and she's fictional.

Gypsy Jones - friend of Mr. Deacon's; avant-guard, rather sluttish but attractive

Being named after her would be a bit of a mixed blessing.

Pumpernickel10 · 16/06/2011 13:56

We had Boris and Lenin too, they were russian hamsters. Littles sods too always escaping

wildfig · 16/06/2011 13:57

Only if she's a character in a Jackie Collins novel, and/or she has plans to become either a QC or the Prime Minister.

DirtyMartini · 16/06/2011 13:59

YANBU, it's a bad idea.

LadyFlumpalot · 16/06/2011 14:05

We had a Russian hamster too, called Houdini for the obvious reason!

Should have called him Vicious really...He was a nasty little sod.

Gypsy, is not, in my opinion a good name for a child. DS was born on Xmas Day but we did not call him Jesus for the same reason. I did push for Joshua though.

May I ask why you enquire?
