To think naming a new baby Gypsy will give her a life long affliction.

Having been saddled with an unusal Christian name myself I must ask this question.

What would you shorten it to - Gyp. Sorry just can't bear it. Life's tough enough without a name that is outside even of the unusual spectrum.

Honeydragon · 16/06/2011 14:23

I had Russian hamsters too! Mine were called Robbie and Vinnie, they never escaped as they were always to busy shagging.

I like Gypsy, but am curious about why you've asked?

Honeydragon · 16/06/2011 14:26

bloody double posts!

wigglybeezer · 16/06/2011 14:27

I knew a pony called Gypsy, she was a right moody mare too!

Our non-pesky hamster is called Bobby Big-Balls as he is blessed in the testicular area. We call him Bobby for short, or when the Queen visits.

In the past I have had hamsters, of varying levels of peskiness, called NugNug, Rex and Spiderfudge.

LadyFlumpalot you may ask why; It was discussed during a coffee break this morning. Somebody knew somebody who's daughter was considering it as a name for their expected baby. I rather hoped that she who remains unknown would read this thread and dismiss the idea.I speak as one who has suffered from a unwise choice of Christian name!
I have known a Gypsy, she was very pleasant but slobbered a lot. As she was a Labrador this was only to be expected. Her kennel mate was named Whisky, I would not name a baby that either.

This is the kind of name people will respond to by saying "mmm, that's unusual" whilst secretly thinking "who would be that mean to a child?"

manicinsomniac · 16/06/2011 15:11

I've loved that name since reading the Chalet School as a kid. Really pretty.

aliceliddell · 16/06/2011 15:18

Lovely for a horse. Pinot - our hamster (Bob) is similarly favoured gonad-wise. (40% bodyweight?) He looks like he's on a furry spacehopper.

MyDogHatesMe · 16/06/2011 15:22

I really like it but wouldn't call my child it. I'd think it was lovely on somebody else's though!

I remember Gypsy from Home & Away. God she was annoying.

SherlockMoans · 16/06/2011 15:24

My immediate thoughts are "young parent" or "small terrier type dog" plus all the usual gypsy images (through experience not repute before anyone jumps down my throat)

I dont know giving any child a name that makes them stick out so much is a good idea...but if you just have to at least give them one if not two more sensible ones they can use too.

LadyFlumpalot · 16/06/2011 15:26

The poor child will end up with either the P or D word as a nickname (derogatory terms for folk of the travelling persuasion).

Pumpernickel10 · 16/06/2011 15:37

Boris and Lenin could squeeze out of the smallest bars you've ever seen on a cage. Boris escaped for 2 weeks once, Lenin decided to join him I had to leave food and water in the middle of the room. I finally caught them and decided to get a Perspex cage, that soon stopped them.

WhereYouLeftIt · 16/06/2011 15:43

Seems to be a fairly common pet name then, so not really good as a child's name! Plus I'd always be thinking of the stripper played by Natalie Wood

Deaddei · 16/06/2011 15:48

I have a Gypsy who is lying on my bed at the moment licking her bottom. She's a cat.

TheFlyingOnion · 16/06/2011 15:49

My hamster was called Hamble, after the playschool doll...

HTH

spookshowangel · 16/06/2011 15:51

MissMap · 16/06/2011 16:02

Is it fair to name and shame your Gypsy on MN Deaddei?

NearlySpring · 16/06/2011 16:10

I actually think it sounds lovely, in theory. However, I think she'd get teased and called "Pikie" as a nickname.

MalkieFraser · 16/06/2011 16:18

Oooh, I think it's a lovely name! Pity it's almost unusable due to it's connotations. Damn you Romany Travelling People!!

PinotsKittens · 16/06/2011 16:19

aliceliddell at furry spacehopper - yes yes!!

Onion Hamble made me go wooosh back to my childhood then! Thanks :) The other one was Jemima wasn't it? Hamble was plain in comparison - I loved her most though.

TrillianAstra · 16/06/2011 16:32

AIBU to not know what half of the "bad words" that people are referring to actually are?
