To wonder why there's so many threads taking the mick out of the middles classes, yet one look on the baby name thread makes me vomit

My grandad was called Bertie - he was middle class.
I met a Felix once - he was a criminal - is that underclass?
I've never met a Florence but it's a really lovely name and I wish I'd thought of it for my dd.

MarianneM · 15/06/2011 19:29

So what are the "normal people's" baby names OP?

HumphreyCobbler · 15/06/2011 19:30

what a peculiar thread

bringmesunshine2009 · 15/06/2011 19:31

PMSL I have a friend who has a sister with a baby called Felix, everytime someone asks what he is called I have to restrain myself from the words: "Oh like the cat" popping out my mouth.

I know of a Bartholemew (sp?)

breatheslowly · 15/06/2011 19:32

Names fall through the classes and then go out of fashion for about 2 generations until revived by the "upper class" or celebrities and so the cycle continues. So you can't really tell that the people posting in baby names are middle class.

Just laughed out loud and snorted drink out of nose at Diablo

5DollarShake · 15/06/2011 19:35

breatheslowly - I disagree with that!

Are you saying the middle and working classes have no say at all in which names get revived?

Celebrities just give their children ludicrous names, and you can't tell me the upper classes are responsible for the likes of Ruby, Archie and Alfie hitting the top spots. Grin

Pagwatch · 15/06/2011 19:35

Op Is saying that many threads are sniffy about aspiring middle class types and yet her perusal of the baby names section indicates a lot of names which would not seem out of place in the family of aspiring middle class types.

Agree or disagree but I think her point is understandable.
Well it is to me

honeyandsalt · 15/06/2011 19:37

@loopyloopsbettyboops

Florence is a lovely name.

And my lovely brother Hugo isn't pretentious at all and carries his usual name very well, though he did used to get bullied terribly by ignorant feckwits the other children in school for it.

@the OP - wow, yeah, I know, the middle classes! Bastards, the lot of them :l

5DollarShake · 15/06/2011 19:38

Agree Pagwatch - that is her point. But it just seems to me like yet another dullsville crack at the MC. I mean, vomiting over a name? Come on! Grin

shesparkles · 15/06/2011 19:39

Florence a "middle class" name??? My grandmother was a Florence and was SO NOT middle class!!!

Antidote · 15/06/2011 19:40

? WTF

You think reading the daily mail is middle class? The Guardian and The Independent are middle class.

Middle class people loathe 4x4's. They can't afford them.

I'll give you the chicken keeping.

Pumpernickel10 · 15/06/2011 19:40

I've a chicken called Bertie :)

rooks14 · 15/06/2011 19:40

hehe i'm obviously just jealous because I live in a flat and can't keep chickens Grin and therefore don't qualify to have a Florence!

OP posts:
diabolo · 15/06/2011 19:42

Don't snort your wine sharkskinthing, it's not good for you!

omnishambles · 15/06/2011 19:43

I really dont think you should call a child 'courtney fat fingers' Gordys Grin

Pagwatch · 15/06/2011 19:43

Hyperbole makes me vomit.

LolaRennt · 15/06/2011 19:53

I am the proud owner of a bugaboo and a pretentiously named baby.

I am most certainly not middle class and have no money, Bugaboos are a very good investment I'll get most of the money I paid for it. Your primark special will end up on freecycle.

My pretentiously named baby will also have better a chance when people read her CV compared to little Shiraz.

CatIsSleepy · 15/06/2011 19:57

'Joined mn in the hope of finding some normal people'

hahahhahahhaahhahahhahhahahhahahahahhahahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaa

pingu2209 · 15/06/2011 22:50

My friend's son is called Jago

BelleDameSansMerci · 15/06/2011 23:01

Oh I am soooooo bored with all the class stuff on here. Really, who cares?

Some working class people are wankers, most probably aren't.
Some middle class people are wankers, most probably aren't.
Some upper class people are wankers, most probably aren't.

IMHO. Not that I am humble. Grin

Bandwitch · 15/06/2011 23:05

Bertram is the only howler on that list. Felix is normal. I know a Felix who must be about 13 by now. Florence was the name of a relative.

You're right BelleDameSansMerci...

BustersOfDoom · 15/06/2011 23:10

Eh???? My GGM was Florence and was born into a 1 up 1 down in South Yorks in 1880 something. I wasn't aware that having a Florence had qualifying conditions! Might be posh/trendy now but it wasn't back then.

Omigawd · 15/06/2011 23:41

@LolaRennt nah my Shiraz will be a sleb on X Factor and your preshuss baby will be scooting around organising her press releases :o
