Am I being unreasonable not to want DD to.watch rastamouse (a cartoon mouse who speaks in a Jamaican accent) as I find the concept mildly offensive?

OMgoodness you are talking nonsense now Maypole. I have a doctors appointmnet now but will be back to respond.

Oh dear any way its only a mouse last post on this subject

In my view its fine, other people may take a different one ,posters or self appointed speakers on behalf of the jamaican or rastas should make it quite clear they are spouting their own sad view and cannot speak for everyone ldn gave a figure of 99% of rastas won't like it well until all Rastas have been spoken to people should shhhhh

Their are lots of people who claim to speak on behalf of "their community" usually these people are wrong wrong wrong

I have house work to do and am very bored or would not be rowing about a bloody mouse oh dear

maypole -- most of that post from LDN (including the bit that you pasted there) was a cut-and-paste from Delroy Constantine Simms' article. So I think that while LDN has said she agrees with the excerpt she posted, and that while the excerpt she posted says that everyone should find it offensive and that it is "shameful" that educated black people like Rastamouse, she (LDN) herself is not saying that anyone other than she herself "should" find anything offensive or that it's "shameful" that black people don't agree with her, just posting with approval extracts from other people's articles that say that.

I think the OP means offensive in terms of social steriotyping. That the accent goes with the music, the bling, the ideology that the mice also comform to !?
I'm sure not EVERY jamaican is into rasta music etc, which the rastamouse sort of hints at for young children.

I'm not expressing this very well, but I can sort of see what OP means.
I mean, why can't a jamaican mouse be portrayed as a mathematician or an astronaut, or any job really, who likes listening to classical music or something from any culture?
It would be a bit like a scottish mouse, who eats porridge and haggis and says ochithenooo. A steriotype rather than an open reality.

I like it.
My kids like it
Particularly my 17 year old who has dreads. Perhaps he is not black enough for his views to be taken seriously though.

I like to hear the sound of different accents on the tv. I like the fact that its a bright and cheerful programme.

I like that its on mainstream tv.

Its not perfect and because it is new it is open to interpretation. Somebody swore it was giving out a sublimal drugs message. Idiot.

I hate the way the Voice always accuses black people who do not agree with their view as being over assimilated and unaware of their roots. They have been doing it for years.

Are they still insisting that black men shouldnt go out with white women? I think that was the point we stopped buying it.

I can understand reservations about it. However it is a children's programme that follows a tried and tested format, just with different accents.

Rasta mouse is hardly held up as the depiction of a Righteous Rastafarian is he? He seems to be a rasta like I am a CofE. And I know for SURE that the CofE faith has been associated with mice for generations of storytelling.

The Voice is up its own arse and always has been.

If people are now claiming to take offence at a cartoon Rastafarian mouse...seriously....where is this all leading? Come on LDNmummy - tells us - what makes you laugh?
I wouldnt be so annoyed at this thread but we all know the Beeb takes notice of people claiming to take offence even if they are in a tiny minority. Rastamouse will be pullled in the next 12 months, guaranteed.
