Am I being unreasonable not to want DD to.watch rastamouse (a cartoon mouse who speaks in a Jamaican accent) as I find the concept mildly offensive?

I know a Rastafarian who hates it so what she is Jamaican she can trace her family back 5 generations and she never even been to jamica street let alone Jamaica

And some black people who are actually Jamaican love it

sunshineandbooks · 14/06/2011 22:33

CBeebies is seriously going down hill. Don't know if I consider Rastamouse offensive or not but most of the programmes are just dull and repeated ad nauseam. It is all a cynical ploy to condition our children to cope with a lifetime of crap-quality repeats I tell you.

CatPower · 14/06/2011 22:33

Does anyone else remember when Rastamouse was a model-animated thing narrated by Lenny Henry? Am I imagining it?

maypole1 · 14/06/2011 22:35

No reggie Yates is African but soo bloody what would we be up in arms if we found out dora was voiced my a white American people need to get out more

Tolalola · 14/06/2011 22:37

I live in the West Indies, and it actually hit the news here that people in the UK had been complaining about this programme, although the reason why wasn't clear - something to do with the patois, I think (although it isn't very strong, tbh).

A rastafarian friend of mine came over when DS was watching it and just about weed herself laughing at how silly she thought it was that people were getting upset by something so ridiculous.

worraliberty · 14/06/2011 22:38

I've never found patios offensive

Decking on the other hand, really upsets me.....

YABU. Rastamouse is an essential teaching aid for wanabee 'urban' teens. How else would they now how to put the accent on when mumbling on the phone?

foolserrand · 14/06/2011 22:42

None of the animals in Timmy Time wear pants.

Rastamouse is epic. Whether its Twee or stereotypical or ticking boxes for the beeb, it exposes children to a different accent. People are different. They look different. They sound different. I don't see how that can really be bad.

kipperroo · 14/06/2011 22:43

Wow. I guess that puts me in my place. I guess I was just curious to see if my reaction was an over-reaction. And from the replies I guess I should lighten up!

worraliberty · 14/06/2011 22:44

OP, you haven't said what you find offensive about it Smile

heleninahandcart · 14/06/2011 22:45

if you say 'beer can' it sounds like bacon in a Jamaican accent :o

What? came from said teen

WowOoo · 14/06/2011 22:48

I don't watch it as boys think it's just OK.

But I love Show me Show me. Who was slagging off that?! I'll ave em.

worraliberty · 14/06/2011 22:48

Omg helen I've just said that out loud 3 times and my DH is shouting "what??" from the other room Grin

RitaMorgan · 14/06/2011 22:48

But what did you find offensive kipperroo?

piprabbit · 14/06/2011 22:50

WowOoo - have you noticed Little Bo Peep's accent?

gallicgirl · 14/06/2011 22:50

I did wonder if it was too stereotyped so I kind of understand where the OP is coming from.

I don't know any Jamaicans to know if they would find the depiction offensive or if they appreciate a Jamaican situation/role model on the TV.

Role model is probably the wrong word but I can't think of the right word. I mean Jamaican kids should see Jamaicans on the tv.

foolserrand · 14/06/2011 22:51

Think the point to rastamouse is you have to make a bad ting good. If you do something wrong, you should try to make amends and do something good. Ds hates it though. so I sky plus it to watch during nap times :o

duchesse · 14/06/2011 22:51

Rastamouse is a cult show. My 16 and 13 yo have it on series record. We now have about 50 episodes. It is a classic, in the same vein as Camberwick Green and the Magic Roundabout. So YABU.

If you want to get exercised about offensive Cbeebies programmes, come join my hate campaign against the sexism in Zingzillas, Bob the Builder and Everything's Rosie; thread over in Feminism topic.

minxofmancunia · 14/06/2011 22:57

forget "rastamouse" can someone enlighten me as to the point of that "small potatoes" programme?? me and dd (4) were literally crying with laughter at the image of a miniature potato wearing a nappy today...I think she found it as surreal as i did...

babylann · 14/06/2011 23:00

I like Show Me, Show Me. I used to have an issue with the presenters, until I realise they're actually pretty good. Not too patronising, but still childish enough for children to relate to. Don't get me started on Ballamory.

babylann · 14/06/2011 23:01
heleninahandcart · 14/06/2011 23:01

Its Rastamouse. He's a Rasta and a mouse. Don't know about you but I've not seen many of them round these parts to know if its a stereotype.

somethingwitty82 · 14/06/2011 23:05

Got to laugh at a mouse whos religion rejects western civilisation being a cult hit
