I have spent the best part of the day discussing immigrants/asylum seekers with my friend. I wish I hadn't bothered. It feels like it was a waste of my time and energy and has left me seething with impotent rage hours after she has gone home.
We have had this conversation so many times, and yet she point blank refuses to believe she is in fact in a minority wrt her opinions and bloody heartless too imvho.
She throws facts at me, and just winds me up, so I have come on here to rant really, because I am too angry to come to a decision as to whether I want to be her friend anymore.
My friend believes that ;
Most immigrants come to this country and commit crime to fund their lifestyles here.
Immigrants should not ever benefit from state support or social housing.
If immigrants were thrown out of social housing, there would be enough social housing to give every British born person a social housing property.
Asylum seekers should fuck off back to their own country, where their own govt should look after them, and if their own govt doesn't look after them, then tough.
British govt should plough more money into British people instead of sending money overseas, because AFA friend is concerned, British people are suffering as much as people overseas with homelessness and alcoholism etc.
If immigration was stopped tomorrow, and all immigrants were made to return back to their country of origin, the UK would not suffer at all economically.
We shouldn't spend a penny on foreign aid while our own people are starving in hospitals and homeless.
My friend answers everything with 'They're not British, so not my problem and most British people think the same way, we want rid of them.' She says all of this with a smirk on her face. She tells me she is a bigot and proud of it.

I don't profess to know much about our reasons for giving so much to foreign aid, or whether immigrants are entitled to state help/social housing straightaway as from May 1st this year as my friend seems to think, but we are all fucking people and some people have fled from situations we can't begin to imagine, let alone live through. I feel genuinely sad that there are people out there dying for the sake of clean water, I don't begrudge a single person no matter what fucking country they live in an immunisation, and if we can help them, I have no issue with that whatsoever.

Incidentally, I asked my friend how she could even have that opinion when she didn't bother working at all until she was 38 years old, and even then, openly admitted that she would never ever earn more than equivalent to JSA, because she doesn't believe it is her responsibility to pay her own rent/CT and point blank refuses to ever pay any of it. She currently lives from a little money her pensioner mother gives her every week to live on. How can she begrudge someone else any help at all when she has spent her entire fucking life being supported by other people. Obviously this is only one side of my friend, and this topic doesn't crop up very often, maybe because she knows how I feel about it, but if she thinks like that, it actually scares me how many people do think like this. She can't possibly be the only one can she?? How can anyone begrudge a child clean water? Immunisations? A safe home? Food? I just don't get it!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and breatheeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Friend? nah ... she's not even worth the cyber-space we are giving her opinion

Psammead · 13/06/2011 21:30

Oh noes!

DH was born here. DD was born here. I am a filthy forriner.

Off I trundle then.

Booper13 · 13/06/2011 21:30

This reminds me of my favourite joke;
How do you confuse a Daily Mail reader?
Tell them Asylum Seekers are the natural predatos of paedophiles.

Psammead · 13/06/2011 21:31

Oh, that's a point actually. No more immigration means all the Brits abroad will be coming home, presumably. Good luck to her 'plenty of houses for all' idea, then.

CurlyBoy · 13/06/2011 21:34

I wonder if she just means non-english speakers. My wife hears this thing a lot and then quietly mentions that that I'm American and obviously an immigrant. Their response is usually "Oh, well that's ok, he can speak english!" back-pedalling as fast as they can.

For the record, in the 9+ years I have been here I have never stayed in social housing, not committed a crime, and have not received benefits until I lost my job in February that I have held since I arrived. I have paid 9 years of taxes and national insurance.

This friend of yours is the absolute worst kind of xenophobic bigot. It's her kind that need shipping off to somewhere quiet and far away where they can't harm anyone or pass on their beliefs.

magicmummy1 · 13/06/2011 21:37

She's a twat. Don't waste any more time on her.

thegruffalosma · 13/06/2011 21:37

Australian/American immigrants are seen to be fine by Griffin and their ilk for some reason (providing they are white). In fact the BNP have invented a term for, OK by us, immigrants - ethnically British or some other bollocks - can't remember and don't want to hit their vile website.

magicmummy1 · 13/06/2011 21:39

Oh, and I don't think you'll ever be able to educate her. Some people just don't want to learn.

portaloo · 13/06/2011 21:41

Curlyboy I wish I could think of somewhere suitable to ship her and all the other bigots off to, but I'd be surprised if any other country wants them.

You have already contributed far far more in 9 years than she has in 42 years. How ironic that the only person I know who has never contributed to society, and by that, I mean, she hasn't even volunteered anywhere, been handed benefits and a home by the govt, then begrudges a brass ha'penny to others based on her own warped opinion of who is deserving and who isn't, when clearly, to most people, she would be seen as the undeserving one. But of course, I forgot, she is british, and therefore deserves to be supported and looked after. Confused Angry

You need a new friend.

There are lots of us friendly foreigners out there Smile.

You put it well when you say 'her tiny mind' - it is - and it is not going to get any bigger. Forget her, join the rest of us, the water's lovely!

ziptoes · 13/06/2011 21:44

I have to say I applaud the OP for trying to have a conversation with her sadly deluded friend. If we just told people with that kind of view to "fuck the fuck off" every time they said it, then they'd never learn anything. My ILs have some pretty dubious views on things (dyed in the wool DM readers), but over the years we've got to the point where we can have conversations about things that don't degenerate into fuck off (though that has happened once). I like to think that I've perhaps helped them to see they are being unreasonable, and sometimes I've realised that i was too (not on the immigration thing, on politics).

Anyway well done OP, for spending the time trying to engage this woman in conversation.

LolaRennt · 13/06/2011 21:45

portaloo

A friend on FB was bitching that the council houses she was being offered were too far away (all of 20 minutes) then went on to say it was because "all these people who just landed here had taken the local ones"

my heart bleeds for her you can imagine.

I love defriending people on FB

portaloo · 13/06/2011 21:45

pointythings Thank you. I'd love to join you thanks. Grin

I was hoping that maybe she would see the light IYSWIM, but by the sounds of things, people who hold these views don't usually change them. How very sad. Sad

sittinginthesun · 13/06/2011 21:46

Obviously a Daily Mail reader... I would dump her asap. You're not going to get through to her.

Reminds me of my friend's husband, who said he was sick of "foreigners coming to our country, building mosques etc.... I mean, it's not as if we went to India building churches!"

Thankfully, he emigrated to the other side of the world as he didn't want his children to be brought up in a country, and I quote "full of foreigners - immigration should be banned".

Good riddance!

CurlyBoy · 13/06/2011 21:47

Thanks portaloo!

I suggest a deserted volcanic island somewhere too far to swim to anywhere else...

sittinginthesun · 13/06/2011 21:50

Oh, and I actually think the DM is dangerous. I have even heard my own darling mother (who reads the DM and the Guardian) spout some of this rubbish. Soon put a stop to it when I pointed out that she is an immigrant herself, and came to the UK to take our jobs, men etc!

portaloo · 13/06/2011 21:53

ziptoes Thank you. I really tried to explain it in as many ways as I could think of, but to no avail. I tried saying that we, as a nation were fortunately in a position to help others, and if we can, then we should (talking about foreign aid at the time) and I found it especially difficult not to tell her to fuck off when she said that other countries wouldn't do anything to help us if we were in need and did a sarcastic little what a stupid thing to saylaugh at the same time.
I replied that if she saw a child being beaten in the street, and everyone else was just walking on by, would she??
She said that 'other countries don't bother helping us, so why the fuck should we help them?'

Now I don't know if other countries have sent us aid or not, but FGS surely that's not the point is it????? The point is that we can and we should if we can.

Portaloo, is your friend a bit lacking in the braincell department in general? This can be the only possible excuse for such fuckwitted views, especially from someone who is such a leech on society themselves.

Why is she your friend? You sound like a complete mismatch. Can't imagine what you find to talk about most of the time.

thegruffalosma · 13/06/2011 21:55

It is generally very stupid people who have no opinion of their own nor the capacity to generate one that spout these views. They spout verbatim whatever they have read in a newspaper they can understand (no big words) in the hope that people will think they have had an idea of her own. I agree the newspapers are massively responsible for the pretty widespread distasteful views on immigration.

This is a very good video of Satan himself (Littlejohn) getting owned by the, very articulate, Johan Hari

ziptoes · 13/06/2011 21:55

sittinginthesun Hope your pal with the sad lack of knowledge of the british raj didn't emigrate to australia. They have some truely horrific violence against immigrants over there. To the point where students from India are increasingly not applying to ozzy universities because of the risk of racial violence.

portaloo · 13/06/2011 21:56

Curlyboy That's the best place for them I agree. Smile

microserf · 13/06/2011 21:56

Why are you friends with an idiot like this? Worse than a London cab driver.

I'm an immigrant by the way, so I would say that. Grin

ziptoes · 13/06/2011 22:03

portaloo I'm sure other countries have sent us aid - I know we've only just paid back the British debt to the US after the second world war. Googled and found that south africa gave £1M aid to britain in 1946.

Unfortunately I don't think it's always "stupid people" who hold this kind of nasty opinion. Some of our leading politicians, journalists etc think like that. They may be loathsome, but are not stupid. Calling people stupid and refusing to engage them is a bit of a cop out. Though having a vent on t'internet at the rancid views on ones friends and in-laws is of course completely understandable Wink

IHateMarlo · 13/06/2011 22:03

I want to write a long elegant well thought out post about how wrong your friend is, how you should be commended for trying to educate her, and how you should now cut this sad effort of a person from your life, but really I want to tell you to say fuck the fuck off to her.

Because having recently had the BNP on the doorstep I have come to the realization it?s a waste of oxygen arguing with them
