Chavs taking over fashion

katvond · 07/06/2011 23:40

Now I love my clothes, used to like Burberry then the chavs decided to embrace it, same with Louis vuitton, now the bastards are wearing north face, isn't anything sacred?

OP posts:
Insomnia11 · 08/06/2011 14:56

"The Great Unwashed" an ex of mine used to say.

Insomnia11 · 08/06/2011 14:58

Where I'm from we called them "townies".

sue52 · 08/06/2011 15:14

I can't see what's wrong with being working class and aspiring to buy and wear designer clothes. It's driven many people to work hard and create wealth. Class based insults are ridiculous and low.

HaughtyChuckle · 08/06/2011 15:17

A'Chav' is a sort of mentality there are plenty of wealthy Chav's

Chav is not a class, it's a lifestyle.

OpinionatedPlusSprogs · 08/06/2011 17:46

I disagree bupcakes. Chav styles are working class fashion trends. When people judge others wearing chavvy clothes they looking down on them because of their class. Often making a lot of assumptions their character, morals and lifestyle too. Personally I find the term offensive.

southeastastra · 08/06/2011 17:57

chavs are the new casuals

Insomnia11 · 08/06/2011 18:08

A lot of people are working class and not chavs though, like my dad for instance.

I'd say a chav to me is a certain type of person who wears designer sports wear and commits anti-social behaviour and other low level criminal activity. A bit like a "casual" though I think that related more to football hooliganism.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casual_(subculture)

Other people or things can be "chavvy" though - they may not actually be chavs but dress in a similar way etc.

There are loads of class related insults though. Someone accused me of 'looking Sloaney' once. Knowing my background I found it very funny.

bupcakesandcunting · 08/06/2011 18:19

I might be inclined to agree with you if I didn't know two people from the most middle-class, Boden-clad, lentil weavy house who are full- on, card carrying chavs. I really do think it's a mindset. I'm working class and I'm not a chav, same for my friends.

OpinionatedPlusSprogs · 08/06/2011 18:44

I'm WC and not a chav and I agree some mc people are chavvy, I do think it is used a a class based insult though thats why I don't like it. Really depends on your definition of chav. It seems to vary.

FellatioNelson · 08/06/2011 22:00

They will never adopt anything that does not have a supposedly exclusive label (that you can see on the outside obviously) or an instantly recognisable signature 'look', eg. the Burberry check. So long as you stick to to understated, beautifully cut, elegant, timeless non-shouty labelled clothing you will be safe.

Zombie thread.

benedictcumberbatch · 03/04/2016 09:02

Fine, we can't say 'chav' anymore.

Can we still say 'toff' though?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 03/04/2016 09:10

Dickard, why havd you resurrected two very old threads with chav references?

ilovesooty · 03/04/2016 09:14

Because the poster lives up to his/her name? Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 03/04/2016 09:16

sooty but who does that GrinConfused?

AyeAmarok · 03/04/2016 09:24

I think Burberry has gone back the other way now. Now that the check is not displayed on the outside. The coats are plain and classic.

LV, old Burberry and anything else "obvious" like that has always been "chavy" OP. It's very vulgar to display your wealth like that.

AyeAmarok · 03/04/2016 09:25

Ah, zombie...

Damn HQ where's that warning you said you were going to put on the top of threads too!

oliviaclottedcream · 03/04/2016 10:28

Lighten up Auntie all humour is in someway critical and the OP is only mucking about.. Look away if it offends you

oliviaclottedcream · 03/04/2016 10:34

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1076576-Nursery-has-turned-my-children-into-a-chav

Now this is pretty offensive

Pandora2016 · 03/04/2016 11:10

'Chav' is as bad as using racist terms like the p-word or n-word.

If nothing else, people using it do handily mark themselves out as idiots by doing so.

Leigh1980 · 03/04/2016 11:25

Definition of Chav on online dictionary

"chav(Noun)
A working-class youth, especially one associated with aggression, poor education, and a perceived "common" taste in clothing and lifestyle."
