Chavs taking over fashion

katvond · 07/06/2011 23:40

Now I love my clothes, used to like Burberry then the chavs decided to embrace it, same with Louis vuitton, now the bastards are wearing north face, isn't anything sacred?

OP posts:
spiderslegs · 08/06/2011 00:22

Chavs is horrid, really, really horrid (& I speak as someone who generally enjoys a joke at other's expense).

It's sneery & perjorative in the worst way.

Anyway, clothes with logos are repulsive, whoever thought a LV bag smothered in advertising was, in some way, stylish?

She sneered.

MumblingRagDoll · 08/06/2011 00:47

Your idea of light hearted isn't that light hearted Katvond...it's usually quite mean from what I've seen of you on here.

montmartre · 08/06/2011 00:51

What a nasty thread.
Why on earth do you care 1) what labels you wear?
2) what labels other people wear?

handsomeharry · 08/06/2011 00:59

God what an unpleasant thread. I am glad to read that people are challenging you over the use of the word 'chav'.
This thread is neither light hearted nor amusing for the simple reason that you are expressing ugly opinions.
You do yourself no credit posting threads like this but are simply building to an already unpleasant picture.

Poor show OP.

jasminetom · 08/06/2011 04:01

Oh my God, I can't believe you are attacking the OP. Get a sense of humour.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 08/06/2011 04:05

It is possible to have a sense of humour and not rely on ugly stereotypes to express it. I know, it's a difficult concept, but it's true.

jasminetom · 08/06/2011 07:06

No dear, it is not a difficult concept, it is your opinion and I respect that even though I don't happen to agree.

discobeaver · 08/06/2011 07:15

Chavs aren't like any other group of people though. You choose to be chav.
Not seen the North Face thing, everyone, chav or non chav seems to wear those bloody boring Superdry jackets. Practically
compulsory if you are under 20, some kind of teenage fashion gulag.

PharoahNuff · 08/06/2011 07:16

agree chav is horrible word

not very mn at all

stop it

usualsuspect · 08/06/2011 07:18

Chav is an awful word

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/06/2011 07:28

Oh nevermind the word Chav. OP said she loved Per Una!!! Shock Grin

catwhiskers10 · 08/06/2011 07:42

So what are chavs exactly? Are they defined by their clothes or their behaviour (or both?) Confused
In Scotland (as far as I am aware) we don't have chavs, we have NEDs.
While many of the NEDs do have a kind of 'uniform' (think shell suits, kappa track suits...) they are NEDs because of their Non Educated Deviant behaviour (hence the name) not their clothes.
I think it's unfair to label someone over the clothes they wear. "chavs" have as much right to wear designer clothes as anyone else.

IgnoringTheChildren · 08/06/2011 07:52

When did chavs become a group of people who need protecting? Is posting about chavs really on a par with posting racial or homophobic slurs or being mean about people on benefits or with disabilities? If so then clearly the OP deserves some of the responses she's getting here. Hmm

Pagwatch · 08/06/2011 07:57

I can't move on from the whole per una thing either.

Shocking.

DillyDaydreaming · 08/06/2011 08:00

Liking NED as a label very much.

Cattleprod · 08/06/2011 08:01

I've never seen katvond wearing anything but a hacked up HIM t-shirt, skin-tight shiny lycra leggings, 5 inch platform soles, big hair, three hundred tattoos and different coloured eyeshadow on each eye!

Am I missing something? Confused

EricNorthmansMistress · 08/06/2011 08:01

Urrghghgh yuk clothes I like are being worn by people who are probably poor! People might think I'm poor! Aaaarrrgh

nenevomito · 08/06/2011 08:22

Yes, how dare people wear the same clothes as you. The shame!

Here, have a Biscuit to get your blood sugar levels up.

Have you ever thought that, while free speech means you can say things that perhaps you shouldn't waste that gift on words that make you look, well, ignorant?

beesimo · 08/06/2011 08:23

The word chav comes from the Romany chaviee which means small child.

When Gypsy people tried to settle in Kent after roads got too busy and unsafe because all our stopping places closed against us they tried to settle down and mix in by sending chaviees to local school. Within very short time rascists name calling by other kids and ADULTS 'you don't belong here you chav ect.

So Romany most 'sacred' word became your peoples word for all things low.

Of course once again B is being too sensitive and spoiling your fun, after all its ok really aian't it its not like calling someone N or dirty J is it??

CheerfulYank · 08/06/2011 08:39

North Face jackets are great no matter who wears them.

And I hate all this "oh I liked it but then the common masses started using/wearing/watching/reading/buying it."

It you like it, wear it.

Beesimo how do you pronounce chaviee? Like chavvy? I don't have any connection to the word myself; we don't say it here in America. I like words that mean little child or little darling, etc. Here everyone calls their children honey, pumpkin, or buddy. :)

crazynanna · 08/06/2011 08:41

Yep..in London,babies/toddlers are called 'chavvie' or rather 'chavvy' as I have seen.
If you wear North Face around here, people think you are an undercover Police Officer Grin

EricNorthmansMistress · 08/06/2011 09:21

'how do they afford it'
'but you do get rich chavs'
'chav is something you choose, not born into'

etymology of the word chav - possibly as beesimo says, romany word come to mean anyone poor, trashy, bad mannered, badly brought up. Is that ok, really? Or - Council Housed And Violent - now I don't actually believe that one, but it's a nice little summary of why the word is so nasty - council house = poor, poor = trash. Nice.

To me, 'chav' is a derogatory term for working class culture, clothing, pastimes etc. It's a nasty, insidious little term that promotes division and snobbery.

ENormaSnob · 08/06/2011 09:29

I think ned is the same as chav.

I don't associate chav with low income. I thought it was more daniella Westbrook and Jordan and those that aspire to be like them.

gallifrey · 08/06/2011 09:38

north face stuff has always been a bit chavvy, nobody who is really an outdoor person wears it anyway because it's actually overpriced rubbish!!
