To think that if I had abducted a child in a very high profile case a few years ago I would have at least changed the Childs name before going to the local play barn?

was with a friends child who has the same name as abducted child.

Whenever I called her name people actually turned and started before whispering between themselves.

Talk about feeling awkward!

I actually feel for parents who have this on a daily basis ( not as much as the Childs family of course!)

The OP means that if someone abducted a child named 'Jane' one of the first things they would do is change her name to 'Sarah' to distance themselves from the crime.

All names are for example Grin

And apparently some people were staring because they heard a high profile pre-kidnap name being shouted out in public.

I agree OP, I think any kidnapper would immediately change the name of their victim if they were planning on keeping them alive and living with them for any length of time.

But at least it means people are still looking for this kidnapped child and that can only be a good thing, even if they were way off the right track today.

ballstoit · 06/06/2011 21:13

I finally get you now.

I'm quite surprised that people stared for that reason. Have you perhaps got a very loud voice or annoying accent?

valiumbandwitch · 06/06/2011 21:14

I think you might have been overthinking it. I know more than one child with the name I think you are refering to. I don't turn around whenever I hear it.

shinyshoes · 06/06/2011 21:16

I work in a school but know of NO Madelines

If u shouted it out, I would automatically turn to look, not to see if it were THE Madeline, just wondering why you need to call out like a commoner Grin

Saw444 · 06/06/2011 21:16

Wrote out a long post but it's gone.

Thank you to the people who have explained it better than me.

I am not and neither is my friend child abducters!

dis op say Maddie...i was also thinking 'shannon'

shinyshoes · 06/06/2011 21:17

I had a friend called Terry and shouted out Terry Wait (e) once, late eighties I think. No-one looked but I did feel like a fool

shinyshoes · 06/06/2011 21:18

oh yeah Shannon, whatever happened to her.

I hope she's well Smile

alitesneeze · 06/06/2011 21:19

oh dear, are you 'comon' if you call your child's name out in a soft play?!

theglove · 06/06/2011 21:20

I got what the OP meant too.
I also have a friend with daughter called Madeline, she's the same age and looks very similar. I wonder a little bit whether they get strange looks or people questioning them but guess it would have to be rare.
You would look though wouldn't you, if the circumstances allowed? Even though you knew it was illogical, just in case.

TragicallyHip · 06/06/2011 21:21

Ok I get it.

What you are trying to say is that when your friend called her daughter by her name Maddie, the other customers turned round expecting to see Maddie who had been abducted?

Pagwatch · 06/06/2011 21:25

Oh good lord

My dd is Madeleine. I shout her name a lot. People don't stare or react.

You were in a soft play. Maybe it was the whole ' more than one syllable' thing that caused the ruckus.

trixymalixy · 06/06/2011 21:31

My DDs name is Madeline. No one has ever reacted like that when I have called her. I think you are imagining it tbh.

nobbysnippers · 06/06/2011 21:34

Feck

Imagine if your kid was called ryan

the last few weeks would have been awful, not being able to use his name and all

When will all this shit end?

Thread after thread of utter fucking nonsense.

I'm not sure i can take any more.

Sassybeast · 06/06/2011 21:41

I think that you have a very vivid imagination OP Wink

Ripeberry · 06/06/2011 21:42

Why should they feel awkward about a name? What about people who are murderers and kids at that time have the same name?
Does it mean that the name itself is 'soiled' in some way?

Bet there were a lot of 'Adolf's' in the 1940s, but did they feel ashamed?
