to wear my wedding dress as a guest at a friends wedding?

I don't want to look like a lunatic Miss Havisham type, but I haven't the time or money to buy a new dress for an upcoming wedding, so was thinking maybe I could just wear the dress I wore to mine.

My wedding dress was not white. It's dark gold, and in fact an evening dress, not a bridal dress.

However. The said friend did come to my wedding and therefore might recognise it (especially as my FB profile picture is a wedding one). If she does will she think me a crazy person or be offended?

Yay or nay?

YANBU as long as it's not inappropraite for venue. Sure everyone will be focussing on bride and bride will be too busy to notice.

katvond · 05/06/2011 14:16

Phew I was worried then OP

DaisyHayes · 05/06/2011 14:17

Meh. Ah, I'll just wear the tracksuit bottoms I've got on now. It'll be fine, no-one will be looking at me, anyway.

They will if you wear trackies Grin

TheFlyingOnion · 05/06/2011 14:18

oooh thats nice Balloon!!

It sounds like you'll be way overdressed for a registry office.

Have you got a sundress you can put some nice accessories with?

TheFlyingOnion · 05/06/2011 14:19

definitely better to be under- rather than over- dressed

hmm maybe not trackies though - are they diamante? Grin

KateMiddletonsEyebrows · 05/06/2011 14:21

My friend wore her mother's (white, but shortened) vintage wedding dress to my wedding. She looked great but I did think it was a bit odd.

DaisyHayes · 05/06/2011 14:22

They've got a bit of egg spilled on them which has dried into a sort of diamond shape, TheFlyingOnion.

Oh God. Right then. Can I wear a black dress if I put a pink jaket over the top and wear pink sandals?

I'd say the fact it's full length is too much for a registry office. You may look like you are being a bit up stagey when she realises it's your wedding dress.
Don't have to go to Oxford street, are there any local shops?

TheFlyingOnion · 05/06/2011 14:27

wear the black and pink outfit. Perfect.

katvond · 05/06/2011 14:28

OP have you a piccie of your dress then we can tell if it's suitable or not

cerealqueen · 05/06/2011 14:30

A tad gullible me. Could you shorten it, as you might get more wear out of it anyway being a bit shorter?

happygilmore · 05/06/2011 14:32

black and pink fine

DaisyHayes · 05/06/2011 14:33

My dress is quite similar to this one katvond.

But I think perhaps you're right about not wearing it. I'm just going to wear the black dress and mutter a lot.

thats a really nice dress, but possibly save it for another occasion...

DoMeDon · 05/06/2011 14:38

Beautiful dress - wear it.

katvond · 05/06/2011 14:40

That's a nice dress daisy. I'd wear it to your friends wedding.

SpringFollows · 05/06/2011 14:41

Gorgeous wedding dress IMO.

But wear the pink and black. Yiou may well upstage the bride.

But, what a GORGEOUS dress. Wish i'd had something like that. I had a strange thing in pale pink and lime. Have no idea what i was thinking.

diddl · 05/06/2011 14:54

Oh that is such a lovely dress.

I can see why you want to wear it.

Is it really evening looking when on or a bit maxi?

If it looks formal & evening I´d say no, but otherwise-go for it!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 05/06/2011 15:42

It's like a maxi-dress then... wear it, OP, it will look very nice I'm sure.

YellowDinosaur · 05/06/2011 15:44

I'd wear it with sparkly flats and a cropped cardi so as not to look too dressy in heels.

I don't see an issue with this at all

ChaoticAngelbitchfromhell · 05/06/2011 15:56

Now if it was me, I wouldn't have a problem with you wearing a dress similar to the one in your link :) Then again I'm not your friend. If yours looks more maxi dress than evening dress then it should be fine for a register office wedding. If you don't want to wear flats then maybe wedges?
