Two words: DOGS MESS!!

OP posts:
MilaMae · 04/06/2011 19:54

No it was sat down, they were mortified, very apologetic and it will be kept in/on lead, not more that they could do. All dogs can be unpredictable.

To be frank it wasn't their fault, they couldn't have predicted it so I've let it go,pointless anything"happening" to the owner. This however doesn't alter my view on dogs in public places.

MilaMae · 04/06/2011 19:57

Cherry I was sooo glad it was ds's bum.The poor kid went through enough as it was.If it had been his face or genitals and he faced surgery and scars he'd have to deal with for life well..... Sad

tifflins · 04/06/2011 21:52

all dogs should be banned from all public places, where they do nothing but shit all over the pavements, its fucking disgusting. owners should have their noses rubbed in it if they can't be bothered to pick it up.

emptyshell · 04/06/2011 22:23

So because someone's kid on here got bitten by a dog - EVERYONE else should be banned from having one. No rationality, nothing like that.

Someone's kid assaulted me at work - everyone should be banned from having one.

moulesvinrouge · 04/06/2011 22:37

OP - dogs and owners have as much right to a beach as you and your children. Public property! I've had many a peaceful walk ruined by 'my jouice mummy mummy my juice my juice waaaaaaaahhhhhaaaaaaaaaaa!' Keep tour kid out of the poo and live and let live!

HelenBaaBaaBlackSheep · 04/06/2011 22:42

YABU. And a bit dull.

ScarlettIsWalking · 04/06/2011 22:50

Yanbu

Dreadful dogs running up to me and dd on our holiday. The gormless owners looking on " oh he's just playing"

can't bear it.

ScarlettIsWalking · 04/06/2011 22:52

" keep your kid out of the poo"

how typically ignorant

PGTip · 04/06/2011 22:54

YANBU, we have a dog but put him in kennels when we go away. A holiday should not contain the phrase"we can't do that because of the dog!" our children are our priority on holiday not a dog.

Rosebud05 · 04/06/2011 23:03

Ah, a dog thread to keep us amused over the weekend.

Personally, I'd have them on leads and muzzled in all public places and owners jailed if they don't pick up their shit.

Rosebud05 · 04/06/2011 23:06

Milamae, I'm sorry to hear about your son. How absolutely awful and, as you say, not rare. And avoidable if dogs were on leads and muzzles in public places.

moulesvinrouge · 04/06/2011 23:16

Scarlett you muppet- the actual real outiside natural world is not 'soft play'. What will you do, not take your children hiking because of sheep poo?!?! Grow up! Crap happens in the outdoors - watch your children. Your children are not others responsibility - although dog owners shod clear up. It's not ignorant- just not arrogant

catface · 04/06/2011 23:27

Dog owners are one of two types of people:
those who happily carry bags of S%!T around in their pockets (sometimes they like to hang the bags on trees for decoration) ,or
the type who leave it on the path, grass or beach as they really like S%
!T smeared all over the place.

Ban all owners and accompanying dogs from all public places!

Noellefielding · 04/06/2011 23:29

YANBU

fifi25 · 04/06/2011 23:30

I choose to own a dog so will quite happily carry bags of shit around so kids dont get covered in it

what a stupid comment

ScarlettIsWalking · 04/06/2011 23:42

Moules just pick up your dog shit dear.

Children tend to play on beaches, you know - bucket and spades? we are not referring to cattle fields. I think you are a bit confused darling.

bronze · 04/06/2011 23:55

Well we have cowpats on our drive and I haven't stopped the kids playing out there

cupofteainpeace · 05/06/2011 00:01

My dog is nearly 10, DC 9 and 6.
Dog poo's in garden - always has done. When DC were crawling/toddling, obviously I was out with them and kept an eye out for poo. Now kids use the 'dog shovel' to clean poo up if they see some.
Kids have always had to holiday on dog beaches and never to my knowledge have they eaten/played in dog poo. Surely if your kids are that young, you are with them aren't you? What about debris/seaweed/rubbish?? You have to keep an eye out for lots of things.
I get annoyed that we are always shoved into the grottiest b and b rooms, and made to pay £30 extra for having a dog. Just in case we are irresponsible owners.
Lots of people are irresponsible too. I don't like people swearing in front of my kids. Can they be banned too? How about some "no swearing" beaches??
Hhmmm, turned into a rant. sorry.

idratherbeboarding · 05/06/2011 00:04

YABU.

DooinMeCleanin · 05/06/2011 01:05

I don't carry dog shit in my pocket. That would be gross. My pockets are for the treats and the spare collars (incase we find strays) Grin. I have one of these for the dog poo and it attaches to the dog lead. Only one of my dogs poos in public. The other one we have had since a puppy and she has been trained to poo only in her 'spot' in the yard. She even poos on command, how many of you can say that about the toddlers you insist on taking to the beach? Wink As a tax payer and a year round beach user (us dog walkers make use of the beach in the winter as well as the summer) I find it quite inconvenient that my beach is cluttered with unpredictable toddlers and empty lager cans and dirty nappies, all of which could injure my dog. As a nice, tolerant person I will find a way a cope. Just as I expect you to find a way to cope with my dogs, because I realise that not all non dog owners are littering scum who care only about their own enjoyment. I just wish that the general public would realise that not all dog owners are inconsiderate scum. I would be mortified if my dogs bothered you while you were out and did not recall. I would never leave their mess, or my own or my dc's litter behind. Most dog owners wouldn't. And trust me, those that do are despised as much by dog owners as they are by non dog owners, if not more so, because they give the reasonable owners a bad name.

It's due to rain here tommorrow. I'll be on my weekly doggy playdate at the local beach. Will you be there? Thought not.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 05/06/2011 01:46

Dogs on beaches SHOULD BE ON A FUCKING LEAD.

I am so, so sick of treading on dogshit that the owner 'didn't notice', and of big dogs leaping up at my kids and making them scream with fright while the owner shouts cheerily 'oh don't worry - he's just being FRIENDLY!'

DooinMeCleanin · 05/06/2011 02:36

Do leads stop dogs shitting??? Shock

Someone ought to tell my Terrier that. He is never off leash due to poor recall around other dogs. He shits every walk, without fail. Myself and two different trainers have tried to convince him that it is best (and cheaper, shit bags cost you know) to shite in the yard before he goes out, but he's having none of it.

Which kind of lead do I need to buy? Quick, the third trainer is due next week.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 05/06/2011 04:08

Leads force the owner to acknowledge that the dog has taken a crap because they can tell that the dog has stopped walking, crouched down and that there is shit coming out of it. OTOH, when the owner is walking 50 feet ahead of the dog without looking back, it is less obvious.

HTH.

DooinMeCleanin · 05/06/2011 05:43

Ah now, that does not help me. As I said, the only dog I own who is allowed off leash is trained to only to shit in her 'special place'. HTH Smile

I find most dog owners are the same as myself, besides which the vast majority of off leash dogs either run or engage in training games with the owners. Responsible owners that is. Irresponsible owners cannot be bothered to properly train or engage their dog in this way. Hence they see where their dog craps, but they don't give a shit. Leashes will not help with this. Nor will banning dogs, as these dog owners don't care much for rules.

I despise irresponsible owners as much as you do, but please do not tar me or all dog owners with the same brush. I am sure you are not the kind of person who litters my training grounds with empty lager/pop cans just waiting to tear open my dogs legs, are you? Or nappies filled with poisonous absorbents?

I do find it slightly confusing that I live amist one of the worst council estates known to the UK (according to Location, Location etc. who placed my town within one of the top ten worst places to live) yet I do not face the problem of wild dogs who regularly harass random toddlers or beaches full of shit. I pity the posters who live in worse places than me. It must be truly dire, unless irresponsible dog ownership is just a middle class problem?

Or maybe it's that a lot of non dog owners embellish the truth somewhat to prove a point and there are no beaches swathed in shite and very few small children who are regularly attacked by wild dogs?

HavingAMaybe · 05/06/2011 05:53

Wading in.

I am a dog owner. A responsible dog owner. My dog is not allowed anywhere near any small children. Even familiar children (ie my own nephew).

I pick up my dog's shit. I do not allow him to jump on anyone. I have done my best to train him, but I do not let him off the lead anywhere near other people, unless it's at a dog park. I am always vigilant around other people.

I think this is the minimum that any dog owner should do.

For those who have children who are terrified of dogs - you are doing your children absolutely no favours by allowing them to be scared in this way. There are dogs out there in the world. Teach your children to cope with them. Not to throw a strop and get upset, because this will potentially attract a dog's attention and/or upset the bloody dog, causing potentially further fear on both sides. Teach your children how to behave around animals, rather than reinforcing their fear.

I am appalled whenever a parent allows their child to rush up towards my dog. I also had to intervene as a father stood talking to his mates at a bbq, completely oblivious to his child going over to my tied up dog and trying to remove the bone that my dog was chewing on. Seriously?! Thankfully my boy just moved his bone out of her reach, but he was annoyed. After that incident I became a hell of lot more proactive in directing other peoples' kids.

It's simply irrational to be scared of all dogs because one bit you/someone you know. I myself was bitten twice as a child. Once taught me not to annoy sleeping, highly-strung terriers and the other occasion taught me that cute puppies can be nippy without being vicious.

I think I shall conclude my essay here. I understand that there are terrible dog owners out there and I have seen (like everyone else) horrible maulings by dogs that are subsequently put down. These are rare and truly awful. But, the overwhelming majority of domestic dogs are not going to rip your or your child's face off when they bound up to you at the beach.
