To think that one should put the cream on first?

On scones that is.
Because surely the cream creates a delicious fatty barrier, thus preventing the jam (raspberry of course) seeping into the sconey cakiness?

And we can do "scon" vs."scone" too, if anyone's up for it.

Don't like scones they are a nothingey kind of cake, but it would be jam then cream

No butter don't like it.

Don't like fruit scones.

Delia Smith stylee cheese scones made with grainey mustard with philly and cucumber -yes already!

EldritchCleavage · 01/06/2011 10:13

Scone (or, if you're from East Yorks, scooooane).

Plain scone, clotted cream then jam. Not butter as well, that's just debauched.
Fruit scone with butter.

Or, plain scone, clotted cream then treacle-Thunder and Lightning.

jam first then cream./ If you insist on a "barrier" then butter, jam and cream.

aldiwhore · 01/06/2011 15:31

Jam first, then only clotted cream...

TarquinGyrfalcon · 01/06/2011 15:40

I'm obviously a philistine cos as long as the scon not scone is freshly made and filled with jam and cream I don't care what order you put them in

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 01/06/2011 15:45

Scon, because you bake it and it's gone... ;-)

Depends were you be eating it.... Down ere in Darset it be jam first... but I believe the Cornish have the clotted cream first, then jam... proper jam...

I really fancy them now...

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 01/06/2011 15:46

should. read. thread. first...

exoticfruits · 01/06/2011 15:52

Jam first then cream-look at any advert for cream teas in Cornwall, Devon etc and that is the way it is pictured. You spread the jam and just dollop the cream on top. (cream isn't butter!)

usualsuspect · 01/06/2011 15:55

I dollop clotted cream! You can't have butter and cream.

SarfEasticated · 01/06/2011 16:33

Scon here,
butter, then jam, then cream
always good to get at least two dairy products in everything IMO

I bet m&s sees a sales spike in their scone dept today as hundreds of us stop off to buy some on our way home from work

diddl · 01/06/2011 16:34

Scone.

Clotted cream first, then jam.

Or jam first if not CC.

exoticfruits · 01/06/2011 16:34

Actually if you go to google images and type in 'cream teas' you will get roughly 50% cream on top and 50% jam on top-so I guess they are both correct and it is personal choice. (but not butter)

diddl · 01/06/2011 16:41

Actually I put that wrong-I do jam first because I usually spread with a knifeBlush

Then I dollopGrin the cream on top-because that way, you can get an unlimited dollopBlushGrin

VenetiaLanyon · 01/06/2011 16:42

Come hither, little ones, I shall share my wonderful scone secret

Always cut the scone into 3 pieces, thus facilitating the consumption of even more cream and jam, in whatsoever order pleases you. There, your life has taken a turn for the better this afternoon Wink.

MissPenteuth · 01/06/2011 16:44

Mine go scone (to rhyme with on, not own), jam, cream. I tend to go for whipped cream rather than clotted, and it's not solid enough to spread jam onto.

Ooh, I do love a scone with jam and cream. One of my most favourite things :)

Honeydragon · 01/06/2011 18:45

Pervert.

MissPenteuth · 01/06/2011 20:17

I shared a scone with my sister this past weekend.

One scone.

Between two of us.

Half a scone each.

VenetiaLanyon · 01/06/2011 20:43

Oh Honeydragon, how can something that feels so right be so wrong?

MissPenteuth, I'm assuming that you couldn't have taken her in a fist fight? Lack of physical superiority is surely the only reason for sharing such a prized item with a sibling...

MogTheForgetfulCat · 01/06/2011 20:50

Clotted cream first, then jam is the Devonian way. Enables more cream to be used, otherwise it is prone to slithering off the jam. Also, if you put jam first you can't spread the cream, and it peaks, causing unattractive nose/cream interface. Gah. And it's 'scon'. Definitely.

IreneHeron · 01/06/2011 20:53

Scon, then butter, then jam then cream and that is the end of it as far as I'm concerned.
