To think that one should put the cream on first?

On scones that is.
Because surely the cream creates a delicious fatty barrier, thus preventing the jam (raspberry of course) seeping into the sconey cakiness?

And we can do "scon" vs."scone" too, if anyone's up for it.

I propose no cream of any kind on jam

because

ITS CREAM THEN JAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless some bastard gives you double cream or the squirty stuff then you a FORCED AGAINST YOUR WILL to do it the wrong way round.

Gerrof · 31/05/2011 23:20
GwendolineMaryLacey · 31/05/2011 23:21

And yes it is clotted cream. What would be the point of any other kind? Confused

Gerrof · 31/05/2011 23:22

I have started to use that Tiptree Little Scarlet jam.

3 pounds bastarding 77 english pence a jar.

Lizzabadger · 31/05/2011 23:23

Butter WITH cream? There are some sick people on this thread.

Honeydragon · 31/05/2011 23:24

look all this spreading bollocks......haven't you philistines heard of the humble spoon?

Insert in jam.....spluch........consume.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 31/05/2011 23:24

Sadly, I live in Sussex, so supermarket clothed cream is the only option.
yy to StDalfour.
Am still reeling from the mention of squirty cream. And earl grey tea (yikes).

WhereYouLeftIt · 31/05/2011 23:26

Not just Earl Grey, OP, but Earl Grey leaf tea made in a proper pot. Sigh.

basingstoke · 31/05/2011 23:27

Well, obviously am spoiled by PIL's own clotted cream Wink
DD was given a jar of StDalfour strawberry jam for her 7th birthday. Her best present Grin

oldraver · 31/05/2011 23:27

Butter, jam then cream. I had some with Clotted Cream at the weekend. Getorf's fault due to her thread the other week

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 31/05/2011 23:28

Every time I try to write 'clotted', my phone defaults to 'clothed' ffs

OP posts:
TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 31/05/2011 23:30

Ooh yes, that tiptree little scarlet is the absolute daddy

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 31/05/2011 23:30

Lizza yy butter WITH cream for me. And if any pudding is enhanced by cream or ice cream, or even custard I may well have all three or a combination of any two. Quite like dairy Grin

IgnoringTheChildren · 31/05/2011 23:37

manicbmc - I would quite happily have a cheese scon, hot from your oven, and forget all about the clotted cream/jam conundrum. But seeing as I can't...

WhereYouLeftIt - I also like butter slices on scones Grin I agree with you about the Earl Grey and there's nothing wrong with a little OCD where food is concerned but you're wrong about the cream/jam order!

Why are people concerned about spreading jam on top of the cream? You don't spread it, just plonk a lovely large spoonful of it on top of the splodge of clotted cream!

bucaneve · 31/05/2011 23:40

Ooh I bought some scones (I say scons) from the Asda bakery today. I'm definitely going to be having one for breakfast tomorrow :). With butter and jam but no clotted cream unfortunately. And I bought that new millicano coffee stuff too.

Now I'm really hungry. I may have to just go to sleep so breakfast comes round sooner.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 31/05/2011 23:41

Exactly ignoring
And whereyouleftit - you use leaves and a pot? All is (almost) forgiven Grin

IgnoringTheChildren · 31/05/2011 23:41

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles - I agree about pudding enhancement with any combination of cream, ice cream and custard!

But not butter with cream.

fearnelinen · 31/05/2011 23:45

Butter
Cream
Jam
Heart attack.

DSis does it the other way though - don't know how Mum raised us so differently!

Sc-on NOT sc-own (can't figure out on and one - they're the same to me which seems to be the problem!)

ScatterChasse · 31/05/2011 23:45

Plain scone, jam,cream

Fruit scone, oven, butter

Definitely

edwardcullensotherwoman · 31/05/2011 23:58

plain scon, butter, seedless strawberry jam then a huge dollop of cornish clotted cream.

Note: No cream other than clotted has any business on top of a scon Grin

PrincessFiorimonde · 01/06/2011 01:04

Haha for this - ""

(Of course it is SCON. Slathered with (a) jam and (b) cream).)

And why is anyone mentioning Earl Grey tea, when everyone knows that is just weedy tasteless tap drippings?

HerRoyalNotness · 01/06/2011 01:07

butter, jam, cream

Ria28 · 01/06/2011 01:07

YABtotallyU
It's fruit scone (scon), butter, strawberry jam, cream

ZenNudist · 01/06/2011 01:09

Scone, jam first, then cream as it's too slippery for the jam t'other way round. Am northern, is scon posher?
