To want to unfriend a lot of my Facebook 'friends'?

I have so many people on there I hardly know. People I took classes with at university but barely ever spoke to, people I met through BabyCentre during my my first pregnancy but have little in common with and have not kept up with.

I feel like the time has come for a mass cull. AIBU?

Well, it depends on what you use FB for. To me, its a social networking site. I have people I know through business, or friends of friends, because they might make useful contacts one day. And I think its nice to hear how people's lives are progressing, once they have left uni, even though you don't really speak to them.

I am constantly deleting people. A girl from school added me the other day after seeing me in town the week before and not even making eye contact. If you don't talk to me in real life, then don't add me on FB.

I see it more as a contact list than a friends list. I have high privacy on 95% of them. Great for networking though, hence me staying in touch. Has come in handy a couple times.

YADNBU - I have defriended lots of people for being too irritating: you know the sort who constantly update their statuses with totally banal non-events, the ones who make 'funny' (offensive) jokes, the ones who are always wallowing in self-pity... It's really a wonder I have any FB friends left!

I delete a lot. Fuck it if I don't want to talk to them anymore, or have nowt in common with them, or they revel in bigging themselves up against everyone else - no one forces me to endure them and I'm not chuffing well going to.

why would anyone even think twice about deleting people you never speak to? i bet you will have been deleted or hidden off their lists long ago anyway

Why on earth did you agree to be friends with these people if they are not a part of your life?

Have a tidy up, and then be more circumspect about who you befriend in future.

I think it is worthy of a debate because people have such vastly different perceptions about what "friends" are and the purpose of a social networking site. For example I lived in the US for two years and people there tend to treat it like a networking tool, whereas a lot of my friends here are very selective and basically only put people they know well, spend a lot of time with up. People I met literally once or twice through work in the US friended me and despite the fact that I now live back in the UK I still get updates about what they are doing in California. I find it unsettling and a little bit violating to be "friended" by someone you hardly know: its seen as quite aggressive to refuse a friend invitation, but I'm buggered if I want someone I've met once for a business lunch knowing what I share with my mates. But not everyone sees it like that.

Anyway, waffle over. If you don't want them there, by all means unfriend them.

Just cull them.

Just don't do one of those awful status updates that go: "MeantToStopAtTwo is having a facebook cull". Which then prompts loads of pathetic responses like "Oooooh, I hope it's not me". I generally tend to cull those people before they get there first just for the ridiculous attention seeking update.

YANBU. We just adopted a little boy and I didn't want to share with a ton of people who weren't really friends. I deleted about 45 and only received one complaint. She is an ex-workmate of my wife and thought that made us friends. I hadn't seen her since 2006! I set her straight. My criteria was if I hadn't messaged you in some way or seen you in the last year you were off my list.

since we moved to UK in September I deleted about 400! 'friends', since then only 3 have sent me a request to be 'friends' again, which I accepted, as they obviously found it important to add me again.

You could also just hide all of the annoying ones .

I have done that ,now I have a news-feed that contains all of about 12 people Grin Wink

The whole thing is mad I have people who want me to add them but when you see them in the street they won't talk to me.

I ended up cutting everyone but 12 people even some distant family I think people just want to be peeping toms and just have look round the page to see if they done better than you in life
