to let MN decide which house we buy?

To cut a long boring story short, we are now stuck deciding between two houses. DH knows which one he wants; I need more opinions...

House A is on the road we currently live on, the Nicest in the Villaaage, all leafy etc
House B is on the second nicest road, nearer the Main Road

House A is a 4 bed semi
House B is detached, 5 bed

House A has a big back garden and a small drive
House B has a very big front garden (because it's a southfacing plot) and a huge drive

House A is pretty and Victorian
House B is a bit less pretty and Edwardian

House A would mean keeping our lovely neighbours
House B may well have lovely new neighbours

House A costs x
House B costs x plus £25k

Any thoughts?

LOTM- surely orangeries have solid roofs, not glazed? [Sour grapes emoticon]

LadyOfTheCuntryManor · 26/05/2011 19:57

Larders tend to be built against an outside wall, to ensure a chill-to keep things cold (old school before fridges were common).

Pantries are like walk in mini-rooms off kitchens which are shelved (I have one as I have few cupboards in the kitchen due to an island).

Ungratefulchild · 26/05/2011 19:58

I think house B looks lovely.

LadyOfTheCuntryManor · 26/05/2011 19:58

read under the orangery heading

and for that, you can buy it.

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2011 19:58

what is House A's back garden like?

and how many kids do you have?

i would give anything for a bigger garden... I just don't think the garden on house B is that useable..

mistressploppy · 26/05/2011 20:01

Lady - Definitely a larder, then. It's freezing, against a north facing wall, marble shelves and everything.

Hully - yeah, DH wants House B. I originally wanted House A but then B came along and now I don't know....

Math - actually, by bizarre coincidence, DH knows the lodger from his college days, so we might keep him as a pet

Oh how lovely Grin Ideal for storing cakes.

Envy I have a pantry, and not a larder.

House B without a doubt

Edwardian properties are my absolute fave

springbokscantjump · 26/05/2011 20:04

House A has a basement!! Oh buy it please (i have no idea why but this is on my list of things in my dream house)!

sleepingsowell · 26/05/2011 20:05

I knew your husband would be after house B!!

BehindLockNumberNine · 26/05/2011 20:05

Crikey, I remember you posting picture of House A months ago. Move still not gone ahead then?

Am liking A.

But B looks FAB. What is behind the house? How much garden have you got? How close to the main road are you?

mistressploppy · 26/05/2011 20:06

House A's garden is west facing, long lawn, paved bit up one side and another bit by the house for sitting on etc. Not huge, just the right size really.

House B's (front) garden is fully enclosed and not visible from the road, so pretty useable really.

Really.

TSC, which one?

Blush
fanjolina · 26/05/2011 20:09

House B

Far superior

YellowDinosaur · 26/05/2011 20:09

I like A. But I'd go for B if you are planning on more than 2 kids (or 3 if you have family locally and don't have people to stay often)

SpeedyGonzalez · 26/05/2011 20:10

I was going to say House A but the larder demolished all my arguments. Call me middle-aged if you will.

OP, I'm a bit concerned about the wisdom of you posting photos of your soon-to-be home on the web. Your profile even says where in the country you live. Please be careful; there are so many weirdos patrolling the Internet.

On a happier note I'm delighted for you that you're on your way to owning what is possibly your dream home and I hope it all goes well and that you make the right decision for your family!

AllGoodNamesGone · 26/05/2011 20:12

Well, we once lived in a house with a big front garden like house B and, tbh, it was rarely used as I couldn't let the children play out there on their own and didn't like sitting in it with people walking past so it was really wasted space that needed a lot of looking after ...

It does look like there is a bit of space round the back. We also had a smaller and less nice garden at the back which we used much more as it was private and safe for the children.

Not sure about the downstairs bathroom in house A. Any way you could at least fit a loo upstairs? May be one already, I couldn't see one on the plans. All of my children have been though the sacred of the dark phase and would not have gone downstairs on their own for a midnight wee!

They both look lovely though. Tough choice!

YellowDinosaur · 26/05/2011 20:12

Oh and my reasoming is that it looks nicer (although can't tell that well from pics granted) and for me a back garden would win over a front garden every time. Probably be a deal breaker.

Even if you are planning 3 children you could put a sofa bed in one of the bedrooms and bunks in one of the kids rooms so they can double up when guests come to stay. Or get one of those single beds that has another under it that can then zip together to make a kingsized bed if you don't like the sofa bed plan

YellowDinosaur · 26/05/2011 20:13

reasoning not reasoming

mistressploppy · 26/05/2011 20:15

Yeah, DH has that "me big MAN an' me want BIG DETACHED penis house" thing Hmm

Behind - We have been waiting to complete on house A since October Shock and in the meantime, house B came to light. Behind house B are some big trees and then the back garden of another house. House B is about 100m from the main road and House A is about 150m, so not much difference, but it seems more when you're there, somehow.

MrsRyanReynolds · 26/05/2011 20:16

House A

LadyOfTheCuntryManor · 26/05/2011 20:17

Or secret option House C. The house I need to sell so I can move.

AllGoodNamesGone · 26/05/2011 20:18

Ha! Ignore me! I had a closer look and see there is a bathroom upstairs in house A. I thought it was another staircase!

StarryEyedMama · 26/05/2011 20:22

It depends. Do you need the extra room? If not, House A looks sounds perfect (and less to clean!)
