Right, first post on AIBU

On Tuesday I went shopping for clothes for two events I've got coming up, I had my 5 month old DD with me in a carrier so wasn't able to try anything on so I bought a few things and tried them on at home.

One of the items was a dress, I'm a bridesmaid at my friend's wedding in July, it is very informal and she has asked us to wear floral maxi dresses. I was happy with the dress when I tried it on and sent her a link to it and she likes it too, so great - all sorted.

Yesterday I wrote an email to the other bridesmaid and sent a link to the dress again and noticed it had been reduced from £39.50 to £25.00. So I thought as I had lots of stuff to take back I'd return the dress too and then get it at the sale price.

I went into the shop and explained to the assistant that i wanted to return some items and about the dress and she said fine about the returns but not about returning the dress and rebuying it as this was fraud! Shock

I really don't see how this transaction could be considered fraudulent in anyway - yes I can see how it is a bit cheeky and annoying for the shop but not that I was asking to do anything illegal.

So I said fine I'll return the dress then I got my DH to come over and asked him to go and get another dress off the rack and buy it. The sales assisatnt was not happy at all and said she would have to get another member of staff to serve him. Then followed lots of tutting and 'we really shouldn't be doing this...' etc.

We were made to feel like we were committing a crime,

So..... AIBU or was she?

Sorry LOTM. I was recently photographed for Grazia's street style section too (Grazia, I know Blush ) I am sure that if they're ever looking for someone to pose for a Dressing Like Your Aunty Doris feature, they'll be hammering down your door...

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 18:05

Can't say I read erm Grazia. However, I'm sure if I did I'd see a million clones of yourself all wearing New Look's latest! Do you get an employee discount? Grin

IprivateI · 26/05/2011 18:10

I've done this a few times. Be more subtle next time. Leave a few hours between the returns and buying again Grin.

TrillianAstra · 26/05/2011 18:11

bupcakesandcunting · 26/05/2011 18:14

New Look? I use their rags to clean me windows.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 18:20

You clean your own windows?!

ChairOfTheBored · 26/05/2011 18:26

My goodness, I pop on here to say "That's not fraud, but it was perhaps a little be mean to put the assistant in that position", and find it's turned into quite a different kind of tread.

Yikes.

I do. I prefer to spend my cash on making my hair/clothes look presentable, amongst other things. I can see we have different priorities.

usualsuspect · 26/05/2011 18:32

this thread is making me laugh

lettinggo · 26/05/2011 18:34

In fact

I bought a wardrobe for my fosterchild in a well known catalogue type place(beginning with A....). It was over £300. Less than 2 weeks later, it was 1/3 off. Now said establishment has a 16 day return policy. So I produced my receipt and asked for a 1/3 refund. No joy. I rang their HQ and made the same request. Still no joy.
I said "can I return the wardrobe if I disassemble it and get a full refund?"
"Yes, in its original packing".
"Can I then buy the wardrobe again at 1/3 off?"
"Yes" again.
"So you are willing to send a truck out to my house to collect the wardrobe, you can't sell it again because there are nail marks where the pins were hammered in at the back as per assembly directions, and then send another truck to deliver the new wardrobe?"
"Yes."
"Even though I will still have my 1/3 off and you will be at the loss of a wardrobe?"
"Yes".

So that is what I did. Only I never disassembled the wardrobe. I gambled on the fact that it would be the same truck sent to collect and deliver which it was. I explained to the driver (with a tenner in my hand) what the story was and he went off with a tenner in his hand, I had my wardrobe for 1/3 off (less the tenner I gave him) and A.... got to stick to their guns.

I think all shops should have the policy that Gap have where they will refund the difference if the price of the item drops within a short time period. The number of people who will bother their arse going back (ahem....) is probably not a lot.

You spend your money on looking presentable? You mustn't have much disposable income in that case.

opens wine settles down on the couch to watch the bunfight passes spare wine to those behind the couch

manticlimactic · 26/05/2011 18:56

It's not fraud. And whoever said they only have to give you the sale price is wrong. Unless you bought it at the sale price OR don't have a receipt.

I wouldn't care if someone did this. Even if they said that's what they are doing. I've done this a few times for customers.

Agree with Bupcakes. Be nice and I'm nice Grin but she said it much better than I ever could.

bupcakesandcunting · 26/05/2011 18:57

Give me some wine. Is it nice wine? LOTM can't have any then. She only swigs Country Manor.

Ha ha LadyOfTheCountryManor.
