I have just been accused of fraud!

Right, first post on AIBU

On Tuesday I went shopping for clothes for two events I've got coming up, I had my 5 month old DD with me in a carrier so wasn't able to try anything on so I bought a few things and tried them on at home.

One of the items was a dress, I'm a bridesmaid at my friend's wedding in July, it is very informal and she has asked us to wear floral maxi dresses. I was happy with the dress when I tried it on and sent her a link to it and she likes it too, so great - all sorted.

Yesterday I wrote an email to the other bridesmaid and sent a link to the dress again and noticed it had been reduced from £39.50 to £25.00. So I thought as I had lots of stuff to take back I'd return the dress too and then get it at the sale price.

I went into the shop and explained to the assistant that i wanted to return some items and about the dress and she said fine about the returns but not about returning the dress and rebuying it as this was fraud! Shock

I really don't see how this transaction could be considered fraudulent in anyway - yes I can see how it is a bit cheeky and annoying for the shop but not that I was asking to do anything illegal.

So I said fine I'll return the dress then I got my DH to come over and asked him to go and get another dress off the rack and buy it. The sales assisatnt was not happy at all and said she would have to get another member of staff to serve him. Then followed lots of tutting and 'we really shouldn't be doing this...' etc.

We were made to feel like we were committing a crime,

So..... AIBU or was she?

So you bought a dress for £39.50 but when you checked again it had been reduced to £25 so you returned it, to buy it again so you could pay £25? Hmm

what a faff about!

lettinggo · 26/05/2011 16:51

I've done worse that this. I once bought my ds a little duffle coat to wear for Christmas. It was £40 which was a lot for me to spend on one item of children's clothing. So he wore it on Christmas day. Then on the 27th of December, I was at the sales and it was reduced to £20. So I bought a sale priced one (cos I couldn't return the already-worn one) and then the following day, returned it with my full price receipt. Missiona acccomplished.

I think it's fair enough! Some shops do not put itmes straight back onto the shop floor to stop people from buying just before a sale and returing to buy it at a cheaper price, you were lucky there were more on the shop floor.

I was in Debenhmas one evening a few weeks ago and as I was about to pay noticed some 20% off labels ready to go on display on the checkout. I asked and was told all kidswear was to be reduced 20% the next day, they held the itmes for me and I came back the next morning to get the discount!

Daughteroflilith · 26/05/2011 17:03

Well, you put the assistant in a difficult situation. I would have got the refund, gone for a coffee for twenty minutes, then gone to a different till.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 17:10

Nothing difficult in refunding something and if a shop worker finds that hard, perhaps they're in the wrong career.

I would've done the same.

MrsDrOwenHunt · 26/05/2011 17:14

touch lettinggo

tomhardyismydh · 26/05/2011 17:19

any returns are at sale price anyway, havent read whole thread and sure its probably been said.

but for your first AIBU this is pretty lame

VivaLeBeaver · 26/05/2011 17:39

Returns aren't at sale price if you have the receipt which shows you paid full price.

bupcakesandcunting · 26/05/2011 17:40

I'm in retail. I fucking hate it when people do this. Actually, I don't. I hate it when people come in to do it and act like entitled arseholes. That's when the problems start. If they're all coy about it, "I'm going to be a bit cheeky here..." that type of thing, I'm like "Yes, not a problem" If they're dicks about it, I say nah, you're alright.

FWIW, we don't offer a 28 day refund as a rule. It's discretionary. Therefore if customer is nice, customer gets nice Cunting. If customer is a cuntstomer, customer gets cunty Cunting.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 17:41

I didn't know you worked in a shop.

Also didn't know there was a difference between you being nice and you being a cunt.

bupcakesandcunting · 26/05/2011 17:44

I do, I do. I'm a right cunt there as well. All my staff hate me. Customers don't come in when they can see that I am in situ. Which is good, since I hate customers.

SarfEasticated · 26/05/2011 17:47

I believe if you buy something in Gap for full price and they mark it down, you can take it back and they'll give you the difference. Good customer relations I think.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 17:49

Do you work in a clothes shop or food division? This will mark up how much more I should hate you.

bupcakesandcunting · 26/05/2011 17:50

I'm in fashion, dah-link. Come and see me, I could give you a few pointers. Or if I can't help, there's a lovely dog groomers salon across the street who will see to you.

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 17:51

Hilarious. By fashion does that mean you work in a Dorothy Perkins or some hell hole like that? I can't see any fashion house with any sight sense taking you on.

KittyBump · 26/05/2011 17:53

Ok, thanks for the replies, seems most people don't have an issue with it. Definitely not fraud but a bit cheeky and blatant.
bupcakes I was most polite :) I have worked in a shop and wouldn't dream of being arsey, I was surprised when she said it was fraud though.

moaninglisa I was returning other things too and £15 is worthwhile to me.

tomhardy returns are not at sale price with a receipt, cheers for the rest of your comment Hmm somewhat superfluous

OP posts:
bupcakesandcunting · 26/05/2011 17:53

Ha ha, you wish. When I said we don't do 28 day refunds, that rules out all of the granny emporiums where someone like you might buy their floral tunic tops to wear over leggings.

Tabliope · 26/05/2011 17:55

That's not fraud. GAP without question refunds the difference on your receipt if the item is reduced within 2 weeks of you buying it. You don't even need to go through the palaver of taking the item in, getting a refund and buying it again. When my DS was little one of the GAP staff members told me to even buy sale items I liked before they ran out and still come in for a refund of the difference rather than wait to see if they came down anymore. I once bought about £150 worth of clothing for him for about £75, took the receipt back within the two weeks and it had gone down to £36 or so and they refunded me the difference.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/05/2011 17:56

Blimey, its getting a bit catty on here isn't it?

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 17:56

Oh gosh. I don't wear leggings. Or floral patterns (excluding a Laura Ashley shirt someone bought for me).

I just can't see anyone putting you in charge of style and fashion.

Still maybe it's different where you live. Do you sell tracksuits and sportswear?

LadyOfTheManor · 26/05/2011 17:57

Oh Viva. It's Bupcakes. She follows me around and we fight on every thread, regardless to the topic.

I would say I love her really. But I don't.

SarfEasticated · 26/05/2011 17:57

viva come and hide behind the sofa with me - have a spare pith helmet

VivaLeBeaver · 26/05/2011 17:58

Ah, did wonder if there was some history. It all seemed a bit heated for a disagreement about return policies. Grin
