I am not trying to be smug, but I would never intentionallytake my kids to a fast food place (like McDonald's, for example). We have eaten there a few times when it was a last resort, but I honestly think it is the worst food you can eat, even if it's only in moderation. I keep hearing casual comments from friends about going out as a family for an evening meal to McDonald's , and I just scratch my head; if I want a meal out, there are plenty of places we can go as a family that isn't going to cost a fortune, and where we can eat proper food. Am I wrong to feel this way?? I'm probably being all judgey pants about it, but I just don't get it....

Here, I'll get my own Biscuit.

What happens if you eat an organic quinoa and tofu salad on a high speed train? Does it become rubbish?

I think our (closed down) wimpy used to be called 'The Jolly Friar'

and it was called a Wimpy BAR Shock

sorry, are all meals meant to be eaten with a knife and fork then?

RobF · 24/05/2011 16:48

They do porridge don't they? And the egg mcmuffin without any meat on it.

What about when you wake up with your Sunday morning hangover from the night before?
i must admit, i seem to find myself at MacD's nearly every Sunday for their egg macmuffin..
What do you eat when hungover at the weekend? (although all types of fried breakfasts are good here Grin )

RobF · 24/05/2011 16:51

"Rob the point was he wanted meat."

What meats do people in this country eat for breakfast other than pork? It's hardly McDonalds fault.

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/05/2011 16:51

I want a big mac meal and one of those scalding apple pie things that give you third degree burns when you bite into them, no pain, no gain.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 24/05/2011 16:52

I sometimes take DS to Maccy D's, usually if we are out and about at lunchtime, or we've just been to the cinema. In the past few months he's tried the burger, chicken nugget and fish finger happy meals, and drinks-wise, depending on his mood, he veers between lemonade and milk - if that's not a varied diet, I don't know what is. Wink

Anythingwithagiraffeonit · 24/05/2011 16:52

I'm a vegetarian, but when they had the big tasty I got about 10 over the course of the month and asked for no beef burger.

God it was good.

I'm salivating now...

What was in that sauce??! :)

Nope, still smugless over here, because I certainly don't feed my kids perfect meals every time, but I will stand by my statement that fast food, whether MacDonald's, BK, KFC...and the like, is rubbish. Dodgy farming practices, dodgy ingredients, and they have contributed greatly to obesity...and if you need proof of that last nugget, have a look at what's happening in China now that American chain restaurants have moved in.

I don't 'accidentally' take my kids to fast food joints, btw. They are usually places to stop when we're travelling...so at this point in their lives, my DCs think McDonalds only exist on Motorways or in airports.

It's poor quality food, and I scratch my head because I just wouldn't consider a fast food meal an evening out with the family. That's all.

I don't go to McDs because I don't like the atmosphere.

But nutritionally, they're no worse than say, Starbucks or Pret, certainly in terms of fat/ calories.

MrSpoc · 24/05/2011 16:58

thats where you are going wrong Op. going to McD's is not a night out its a quick / lazy fix that tastes great and a big mac has less calories than a ceaser salad from Tesco. In a large big mac meal with coke is only 1200 calories.

BooyHoo · 24/05/2011 16:58

eve have you actually checked the nutritional content of mcdonald's food? i think someone linked to it earlier.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 24/05/2011 16:59

Your DC must lead very blinkered lives if they think McD's only exist in airports and service stations - you can hardly miss those golden arches on every other street. Hmm Health bragging by stealth, methinks.

EveWasFramed72 · 24/05/2011 17:02

1200 calories??? That's ALL??? My goodness, what was I thinking??? Let me go and get DCs ready for a big mac meal RIGHT NOW!!! Hmm

I have checked the nutrition content...and sure, there are worse things, but it is well dodgy to me that McDs in England tastes the same as one in China and the one in America. I'm sorry, but food that can taste exactly the same on every continent can't be right...it just can't!!

RobF · 24/05/2011 17:03

I think a Big Mac has 650 calories just in the burger. God knows what they put in them because they aren't that big.

EveWasFramed72 · 24/05/2011 17:03

We don't have one around here, SoftKitty, so it's easily avoided. And they don't live blinkered lives, and it's not health bragging by stealth. We love our local chippy and the pubs around us, so I am not stuffing DCs full of spinach at every minute!!
