Right..now I've lured you all in!!Wink

Just a little nudge to remind people to give blood if you can.
Stocks are still incredibly low, you get to feel good about yourself and you get a lie down and a Brew afterwards.

Don't make me set Misdee on you!!

Bonkers - not for me.

I am freelance, work unpredictable hours in various locations. I can never accurately predict when I will be free. Childcare is therefore tricky. I have been trying to sort out a dentist's visit for months.

Last time I tried to donate blood it was during a 2 hour window when my youngest was at a birthday party. I didn't book an appointment as I didn't know whether he'd want me to stay (it was in a bowling alley, with people he didn't know very well). Any way I sat in a queue for over an hour, didn't give blood and since then I've not bothered.

I've been giving blood, on and off, since I was 18. This new system doesn't work for me. I have enough difficulty keeping my professional appointments. I don't need the hassle of this in my free time. I would be more than happy to have kept with the old system.

Sunday?
they do Sundays where I live

queenceleste · 26/05/2011 10:30

YANBU, I don't like it much myself, I don't like needles but I've given about 10 times now.
I do it because my mother always gave blood when we were growing up used to say things like: "If you can, you should, it's the easiest way in the world to save a life, everyone who can should" sort of thing.
So I do, just early training.

The idea that we can't donate blood or organs in this country because we have had a blood transfusion is pretty outrageous, also that we can't even donate abroad just because we have 'lived' in the UK between 1980 -1996 and are therefore deemed to be at risk of human BSE. It is about time the DOH started using the blood screening tests/filters for CJD/vCJD/nvCJD on all blood donors then at least they can be sure that 'NO' infected blood is passed on, it really is that simple.
Friends of mine are gutted that they cannot donate their blood or be an organ donor just because they have had a UK blood transfusion, it's ridiculous.

jennypenney · 26/05/2011 11:46

They won't take my blood because they want my platelets instead. Apparently you can't do both.

So... for all of you who CAN give blood, please get your platelet count checked to see if you can give platelets. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete each donation, which is a large chunk of anyone's free time esp if you have dcs but it really is worth it because the platelets are used to help really, really poorly people.

Also you get scones and not just biscuits Grin (well, we do where I go)

YANBU, but, until I return to England, I will refrain. Am in Scotland at the moment and, as they keep their blood only for them, I refuse to donate.

Unless one of you can tell me different, please?

Merle · 26/05/2011 12:26

Never heard of a Sunday session round here.

Merle · 26/05/2011 12:27

not even sure if they do Saturdays, but could be wrong.

pooka · 26/05/2011 12:36

Why would you not want your blood to be used where it's taken i.e. Scotland? Does it matter? Or are you joking?

MovingToABetterPlaceAtLast · 26/05/2011 13:32

pooka No, not joking. You can't give blood here until you've had all the tests again, no matter how much blood you've given 'south of the border'. I had all the tests and then was told by the nurse, (as I donated), that the Scottish keep 'their' blood for Scotland and don't share it with 'England'. I have given blood for years in 'England' and never heard anything like that from the nurses there!

As I am 'English' I thought, "Well, stuff you then!!'

PlumBumMum · 26/05/2011 13:36

I have to look into it again, anytime before there was always a reason I couldn't medication etc
BUT I did sign up for organ donation, so if you can't give blood sign up for that if you can.

RamblingRosa · 26/05/2011 13:36

Ooh thanks for this thread. It's reminded me I haven't donated since before becoming pg (4 years ago!). Must do it.

phonemonkey · 26/05/2011 13:38

I judge too but only out of jealousy for those that can but don't. I would love to but I can't because I have a hereditary condition which makes my blood unusable for transfusion. Sad

CalypsoFramboise · 26/05/2011 13:42

Would love to but weigh less than 50kg (7st 12lb). Keep badgering my DH though as he's somewhat over that threshold Wink
Hope you generate some new donors with this thread!

hollyoaks · 26/05/2011 13:47

Thanks for the reminder, its on my to do list. I gave consent for dd2 to recieve a transfusion should she need it during major surgery when she was newborn. In my book, if your prepared to recieve you should be prepared to give. Would have done it yesterday as they were at our local church hall but it was dd2s 1st birthday. :)

jasminetom · 26/05/2011 14:40

Here in Qatar you have to give blood before any planned surgery. Then if you don't need it they add it to their stocks. If you don't want to or can't because you are anaemic you can elect someone wlse to do it but someone has to.

yukoncher · 26/05/2011 14:43

My blood is too effed up to donate :/
I have antibodies that could hurt future unborn babies of any woman who used my blood.

yukoncher · 26/05/2011 14:44

Unless my blood can be donated to 'men only'????
