Right..now I've lured you all in!!Wink

Just a little nudge to remind people to give blood if you can.
Stocks are still incredibly low, you get to feel good about yourself and you get a lie down and a Brew afterwards.

Don't make me set Misdee on you!!

A beautiful teenager called Billie was the reason I started giving blood again. Thank you TheFirstMrsDeVere.

Lexilicious · 23/05/2011 16:52

I did last month for the first time since having DS - I could have gone a whole year earlier but had been forgetting to make the appointment. DH won't as he's not keen on the needles. I'm working on him. Grin

What is it - three times a year?

RockStockandTwoOpenBottles · 23/05/2011 16:53

I can't sadly as I have haemolytic anaemia and a low blood count at the best of times. Will be eternally grateful to the people who do, however, as my life was saved with a massive transfusion when I had DS and a smaller 4 unit one when DD3 arrived.

If I could, I would, I really would.

cherryburton · 23/05/2011 16:53

I got over my needle phobia and went for the first time in January. Am going again next week.

Is it true that it takes your body 4 months to replace the pint they take? Because if it is, and I donate every 4 months, will I really never have the full amount of blood in my body? Hmm

Engelsmeisje · 23/05/2011 16:55

They won't take mine in the Netherlands in case I turn out to be a Mad Cow.

MrsTumbles · 23/05/2011 16:55

Thank you for the reminder, I am booked in on the 6th June, and have booked MiL to babysit :)

Serenitysutton · 23/05/2011 16:56

If you have a rare blood type they don't need as much in stock, it doesn't make you any more attractive as a donor. After all if yor blood type is rare not many people need transfusions of it.

QuintessentialOldMoo · 23/05/2011 16:58

Sure that is true too, Serenity, but I heard they were particularly low in stock on my blood type.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 23/05/2011 16:58

As soon as they can rule out a link between CJD and infected blood all of us unclean wll be able to give blood again. I only found out recently that I couldn't and was absolutely gutted. Sad I have a fairly rare bllod type and when i needed my tranfusion they really struggled to get enough blood. I nearly died, would be nice to give something back.

WillbeanChariot · 23/05/2011 17:24

Last time I went I was told not to bother while TTC. Disappointed to be honest but they said it would affect my fertility for several weeks.

DH did not used to give as he was freaked out by it. Since DS was born very early and required many transfusions he has forced himself to go. [proud emoticon] I think it's a great thing if you find it difficult/frightening and still do it. It's easy for me.

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 17:28

how bizarre!
it wouldn't affect your fertility - that's bollocks!

how would giving a pint out of your arm affect your ability to a) produce an egg and b) for that egg to be pnetrated by a sperm?
Confused

Greenkit · 23/05/2011 17:44

I used to but they dont want it anymore as I had a transfusion in 89 while pregnant with my eldest. She also cant give blood as she would have received the blood.

I wonder if that means my two younger ones cant give blood either as I had them after I had the blood but some years?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/05/2011 17:55

OP... I think your thread title stinks. It really does. If I didn't give blood of my own accord, I wouldn't be influenced to do so by your thread. Sorry. I know you're trying to drum up business. :)

JellyBeansOnToast · 23/05/2011 17:57

Personally, I think if you would be prepared to accept donated blood should you need it, then you should be prepared to donate it yourself. Same goes for organ donation: why should you be happy to accept an organ if you wouldn't donate them in the event of your death? Doesn't quite add up to me, but hypocritical.

JellyBeansOnToast · 23/05/2011 17:57

*bit, not but!

ilovesprouts · 23/05/2011 17:57

i cant give blood as a got white dot on heart & murmur

ChristinedePizan · 23/05/2011 17:58

I think the thread title is a joke which is pretty obvious when you read the OP.

confuddledDOTcom · 23/05/2011 17:59

I can't. They induced a TIA just taking a blood test (it was a big one with 11 vials but not as big as a donation) and regularly during tests my blood thickens up so it stops flowing into the needle and my head (usually they stop before they induce another TIA but it leaves me with a bad headache, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness).

PersonalClown · 23/05/2011 18:01

To all those that think IABU..
I apologise for the title/implication.

It was my half arsed attempt at sarcasm/humour. I am usually much funnier in- my head--in RL.

confuddledDOTcom · 23/05/2011 18:02

JellyBeans, with my condition I'm likely to need blood at some point in my life it also stops me donating. Is it me or my body being hypocritical?

PersonalClown · 23/05/2011 18:06

A serious question for a second.
My male gay friends cannot give blood as they won't accept it. Most are sensible about protection as anyone else so why are they excluded?

Anyone can catch HIV/AIDS from unprotected sex so why are gay males automatically banned?

bucaneve · 23/05/2011 18:07

I'm not allowed either as my blood pressure is too low. Bit annoying really as I'm O neg so universal donor.

Insomnia11 · 23/05/2011 18:13

I have given blood on many occasions in the past (even though I don't like the experience very much) but recently haven't been able to find any convenient local sessions. Will keep having a look though.

One time I was turned away from a session in central London as it was appointment only. Did piss me off rather when I had made time to go, and had had a letter asking me to attend, which stated I could make an appointment but it wasn't obligatory. Previously at the same location I had just turned up and given blood without an appointment. Also when I first went to give blood my iron was too low so they couldn't take my blood. I do try at least...

Indith · 23/05/2011 18:14

I'm on a ban at the moment. I failed the finger prick and was packed off to see the Dr and get industrial strength iron.

I started giving as soon as I turned 17 but in the 10 years since then I have spent 2 of them out of the country and had 2 children so that is a total of 5 years out of action.

Insomnia11 · 23/05/2011 18:14

How low is too low bucaneve? I have low BP but have never been turned away on that basis.
