Right..now I've lured you all in!!Wink

Just a little nudge to remind people to give blood if you can.
Stocks are still incredibly low, you get to feel good about yourself and you get a lie down and a Brew afterwards.

Don't make me set Misdee on you!!

can't give blood, I have MS Sad

thinNigella · 23/05/2011 16:19

My little one has had about 9 transfusions. Blood has helped her have treatment for a life threatening disease so far.

Please do it, it's used for lots of different things, I had no idea until I started on this nightmare.

TanteRose · 23/05/2011 16:23

No, they won't take my blood in Japan either - no-one (foreign or Japanese) can give blood if they spent anytime in the UK during the 80/90s (because of BSE/CJD)

ratspeaker · 23/05/2011 16:24

I can't give blood because, ironically, I've had a transfusion

pixielovescake · 23/05/2011 16:24

Just thought you might like to know when the National blood came to my university a while ago , they had so many offers from studentst that they had to start turning people away in the end. nice story there.
Aside from that i dont give blood as i dont meet the weight criteria. Maybe one day i will and i will do it then.

pixielovescake · 23/05/2011 16:25

Students. Oh dear.

DontCallMeBaby · 23/05/2011 16:25

I love giving blood - tea, a biscuit, sticker for DD, and a chance for a nice lie-down, all on work's time. I know loads of people who can't for numerous (legit) reasons so I like to think I give on their behalf too - and they get on with work on mine.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 23/05/2011 16:25

yep, I really must esp as I am O-!!

I used to for years, then got my belly button pierced and they didnt want me for a while, and just never got back into it.

I really will go though so thanks for the reminder!

clam · 23/05/2011 16:28

I have a rare blood group. I have been giving reasonably regularly for 30 years. But when I tried to book in for an extra session at Christmas during the snow, when there were all these TV adverts asking for donors, they said they couldn't fit me in until February as they were "very busy!"

walesblackbird · 23/05/2011 16:30

Can't .. I don't weigh enough and take HRT - would that exclude me?

CrystalQueen · 23/05/2011 16:32

Must go back, was a bit peeved to be turned away last time as I had just come back from the US. Why don't they just say that on the reminder card, instead of "be sure to tell us if you have been in the US within the last 28 days". Grrr. But now reminded about going back.

Nosleeptillgodknowswhen · 23/05/2011 16:35

Gave 2 weeks ago at work

And DH gives platelets

smoggii · 23/05/2011 16:35

OMG, I have just read this business about transfusions, didn't realise it would stop me giving blood.

I always have but couldn't whilst pregnant and was going to wait six months after the baby but I had four Blood Transfusions (I'm so greedy) after the baby was born. Am I stopped forever or do I just have to wait a while?

GreenToes · 23/05/2011 16:38

I can't anymore because I have CFS/ME and it may or may not be contagious :( also can't give bone marror because apparently you have to be a blood donor to do that.

unclefester77 · 23/05/2011 16:39

National Blood Service's list of who can't is here
secure.blood.co.uk/c11_cant.asp

expatinscotland · 23/05/2011 16:40

YABU. It's peoples' own business what they do with their bodies.

It's almost always people who have some excuse why they can't who nark on and on about others doing so, IME.

ChristinedePizan · 23/05/2011 16:43

They won't accept anyone who has had a transfusion sadly :(

Re carrying a trait, I presume you mean you're a carrier of a genetic disorder? I'm a cystic fibrosis carrier and I can give blood because it's only passed down through the genes, you can't 'catch' it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/05/2011 16:46

another one who wishes they could :( posriatic arthritis rules me out apparently - though they've had several armfuls before they decided that one.

smoggii · 23/05/2011 16:47

I am genuinely gutted Sad

Lizcat · 23/05/2011 16:48

I can't anymore, but I used to be an antibody donator as I have valuable unusual antibodies.

Kendodd · 23/05/2011 16:48

I gave blood once, they could only get a little bit out though, less than half a bag, seems like I need all mine Grin

Good luck getting other to give though.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/05/2011 16:50

I can't give either due to transfusion. I gave 25 pints before they decided it was a Bad Idea.

I had my transfusion 25 years ago. I wonder if eventually they'll put a time limit and let me give again. Especially as there are so many of us who are willing but unable.

dh gives platelets though and we're all signed up as organ/bone marrow donors.

QueenStromba · 23/05/2011 16:50

I'm another one who can't due to crap veins, I've had nurses squeezing the blood out of the tube to try and get enough for a second vial and there have been quite a few times where they've told me to go off, drink a tonne of water and come back the next day because they can't even get a drop out of me. I always feel really guilty when threads like this come up though as if I'm just making excuses.

QuintessentialOldMoo · 23/05/2011 16:50

I cant. Although my blood is rather rare, I had a hospital infection, which means I can never give blood. I have the utmost respect for those who do!

tiktok · 23/05/2011 16:51

I have tried three times, but they cannot get more than about 5 mls out of me, and even that was slow, after several attempts at sticking me...so I was politely told 'please don't bother coming back' :)

I don't see 'rubbish blood givers' as a reason for not giving blood on the website though.
