She always smelled of sanitary bins. I don't care if she had been told not to wash her minge by God himself, it was deeply unpleasant to have to work in a windowless office with a woman who smelled of that.

HugoFirst · 23/05/2011 16:36

I would feel seriously scratty if I had only a strip wash. It's like what the Victorians had to do. Times have moved on.

compo · 23/05/2011 16:44

How do you wash your bits in a strip wash?!!

Ew! Manky flannel?

EricNorthmansMistress · 23/05/2011 16:44

Some of the teenagers I work with smell. Smoking, not brushing teeth, not showering, not washing clothes. Even the ones in foster care sometimes avoid washing like the plague. Why? Neglect, poor self esteem. Who really knows? But I do know that being smelly is down to not taking care of yourself, which is linked to lots of very sad circumstances that these people didn't cause or create. I know not all stinkers were abused or neglected as children, but lots were, so I have sympathy. I tried to get a girl to see a dentist today. She's 20 and her teeth are black. She refused :(

A friend of mine has fish odour syndrome.
She washes constantly, to the extent that her skin is often red raw. She has to change 3 or 4 times a day. She has to change her sheets every day.
She eats a strict diet and takes antibiotics to try to manage it, as it is incurable.
She rarely goes out, as people make comments.
She is single, and has decided not to have dc as she read there may be a genetic link, and she feels she couldn't manage her condition and a baby.

Hope she's not reading this.

People who don't wash daily don't always smell. My ILs live in a country where hot water/showers in the home is not usual. They wash twice a week at communal baths. They wash their bits with clean running water after every toilet trip which is 100000X cleaner than loo roll, honest. They wash their pits and bits with flannels and honestly don't smell.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 23/05/2011 16:47

A guy who worked in the same room in the library as me stank of BO, someone finally mentioned it to him as it's a windowless room and the smell was foul. His reply? 'Well, I go running before I come in.'

He honestly thought it was fine to get all sweaty, stink all day, then go home and shower. He had no diagnosis of mental illness, he's not too poor to afford a shower ... just fucking arrogant about what he subjected other people to. They finally banned him from coming in in that state, and I'm glad.

faverolles · 23/05/2011 16:47

Not that I'm suggesting that this is common, thankfully it's not, but still, there may be other reasons why someone can't wash, and not just laziness.

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 16:47

compo i use my last day's knickers to wash my bits.
I have a friend who uses wet wipes for hers.

expatinscotland · 23/05/2011 16:48

It's because everything is about 10-30 years behind the rest of the developed world here, and so a lot of places still don't have a shower. Yak.

I'm with you on strip washes, too, Netto. Boak at fanny and bum flannels.

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 16:48

:( for your friend fav

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 16:49

LRD - that's one fo the things my colleague used to do!
just couldn't understand that it was not okay to exercise then work all day without washing!

SarahStratton · 23/05/2011 16:51

I've heard of that fav, your poor friend :(

HugoFirst · 23/05/2011 16:53

Nickelbabe are you living in 1926?!

ShirleyKnot · 23/05/2011 16:54

I knew a man who had that syndrome as well. I would like to point out that the woman I worked with didn't smell of fish.

bidibidi · 23/05/2011 16:55

I hate showers, just freeze so much having to get in and get out.
I always think that if you find people stink that much that you must find the whole world a very stinky place. There are loads of other very smelly things about that must be driving you crazy, too. And if not... then you are being selective about finding BO offensive but not car exhaust, onions, farts, cheap perfume, booze, tobacco, Geraniums, Basil, all sorts...

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 16:55

no, i'm not Hugo - i just don't like showering, and I don't have time for a bath (which is wallowing in your own dirt, anyway)

It works for me.
If I had a smelling issue, then I would change the way I wash, but I don't, so it's quick, easy and works.
(and i still have to smother myself in moisturizer when I've finished)

luvlemoncheesecake · 23/05/2011 16:55

It makes me vomit when I walk past someone and can smell their unwashed skin.

EricNorthmansMistress · 23/05/2011 16:55

If I have a strip wash I get in the bath, run warm water into a bucket and use a cup to run the water where it needs to go. I always use hand to wash bits rather than a flannel anyway.

faverolles · 23/05/2011 16:55

Shirley - my friend doesn't smell of fish either. She smells of strong BO.

compo · 23/05/2011 16:55

Last days knickers - ew!!
