Next thing will be that moron coming out with bullshit about people not being "true believers" and therefore God wants them to prove themselves before taking them to Heaven or some such crap.

MigratingCoconuts · 22/05/2011 19:35

in my ignorance of strange cults, I thought they generally committed mass suicide to avoid this sort of Blush moment.

But yes, I like the 'god is testing you' gambit!

Like burying those pesky dinosaur fossils....

I feel very sorry for the people who really believed this and spent all their money or sold their houses. There's a real danger that many people who saw this as the way out of difficult lives will now commit suicide :(

heliumballoons · 22/05/2011 19:55

OMG I'm an ignorant idiot - writer of dreams did people really do that?

I believe in God etc but also only believe in things that I believe really can and will happen iyswim? This was not one of them. In actual fact I was on the phone to my friend as we said if we went we might as well go doing what we do best. (we were joking though) Blush

MigratingCoconuts · 22/05/2011 20:05

it must be so hard, if you completely believe the world will end, to then readjust when it doesn't

I read somewhere recently that people who believe this kind of thing and are proved wrong (that is, all of them) have a strong tendency to then redo the calculations and convince themselves just as strongly about another date, or that it happened in some "metaphorical" way, or just about anything other than "we got it wrong" because they are just so invested in the idea that they can't bear to let it go.

Apparently they did Helium.
