I'm not defending ANYONE, far from it, however, how does "being in the
public eye" make a difference?

If everything you said or did was splashed all over mn for example, how would you feel?

Gandalfthedyed · 22/05/2011 11:29

If I was in the public eye and paid an enormous salary partly because I was in the public eye and I dipped my wick where it shouldn't have been, I'd expect everything I'd got, TBH.

KatieScarlett2833 · 22/05/2011 11:30

Fine, seeing as I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be, unless eating scones for breakfast whilst in bed with laptop is a crime against MN.

KatieScarlett2833 · 22/05/2011 11:32

Alll the overpaid sportsman concerned had to do was keep it in his pants.

Not that difficult, I seem to manage to do that with no effort at all.

funnyspelling · 22/05/2011 11:33

Regardless of whether you were rich or poor, having your privacy invaded would piss you off though, wouldn't it?

OP posts:
ChishAndFips · 22/05/2011 11:33

Not a problem. I haven't done anything I mind anyone else knowing about.

gapants · 22/05/2011 11:33

So who are you then? PM me I wont give you up Wink

I think if I were pubic figure that had media interest then I would ensure that I led a life that did not warrant scrutiny from the red tops. Lots of famous slebs seem to be able to be famous and scandal free. I think to a certain degree many slebs court the attention, go to the clubs and so on where the paps will be. Some don't though.

Additionally if you are a figure that youth aspire too, footballer, pop singer and so on then I think you take on a responsibility to ensure you lead a life that is not only aspirational as well as inspirational.

dalek · 22/05/2011 11:33

If I'd actually done those things being said I'd just have to suck it up.

Bumfuzzle · 22/05/2011 11:34

I think it's part of the choice you make.

You can't be stupid about it. The reality is that if you are in 'the public eye', part of that means that if you do something that the papers think people will fall over themselves to know all about, then they will print it. Cos it sells.

If this is intolerable to you, then either change the world so that the masses no longer give a flying fuck about 'slebs' (I wish!!!), or don't do anything gossip-worthy, or choose a profession where it won't sell papers if you screw around.

whether it should or shouldn't be like that, the fact is that It IS like that. And they know it.

funnyspelling · 22/05/2011 11:34

Well 'every detail' is rather selective isn't it? Fern Briton is in the public eye - why was it anybody's business every time she ate a pastry?

Or do you mean the footballers? I still don't know who it was and I just don't care. The public that are so desperate for all that trashy pap don't have much about them and the so-called 'journos', even less. Hmm

Some things, like bereavements, illness and so on - should be 'off limits' for everyone, but they don't seem to be. Sign of the times and plummeting standards of decency. Hey ho.

ObiWan · 22/05/2011 11:35

But if people are effectively being paid huge sums to be in the public eye, it's a fair trade off.

They absolutely know what the score is when they sign up for it.

StellaSays · 22/05/2011 11:36

I think its similar to when you fuck up and people you know gossip about it. It can't be helped and you did fuck up after all.

Slebs just have more people that want to gossip about them.

voodoomunkee · 22/05/2011 11:36

Being in the public eye, paid for by the public lends itself in some way to being answerable to the same said public surely?

Anyway I dont think the issue with a certain row going on is the act but more the reaction!

Don't like the time? don't do the crime :)

Anyway right now I am just devouring some Haribo in lieu of brekkie.... can't say I would be arsed if this was shared with the public Grin

funnyspelling · 22/05/2011 11:40

I see your point real, but they are people too! I remember seeing an inteview with the sugababes and one of them came off holiday to find they had been accused (falsely) in the press of x, y and z, whch they then had to deny...

What is said does affect people's personal lifes!

OP posts:
Hassled · 22/05/2011 11:41

It's a tough one - hard to draw the line between "fair game" and "ridiculous and unfair intrusion". Someone who's famous largely for being famous - the Big Brother contestants, the X Factor people - they court publicity, they make money from the Heat articles etc; as far as I'm concerned they are never in a position to complain about press intrusion.

People who are famous purely because of the nature of their job - footballers etc - and who don't otherwise court publicity - then it's much harder to see what's fair enough.

In fairness to the press, they have left well alone when specifically asked to for example re Prince William at St Andrews. They are capable of adhering to boundaries.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/05/2011 11:46

If someone is paid a huge amount of money that basically comes out of Joe Public's pocket then what they do is going to be of interest. Whether that's what they do for a day job or what they do in their spare time.

The majority of folk in that position manage perfectly well, behave reasonably and hence don't have 'every detail of their personal lives' on show. If you're going to behave badly, then worse still spend £££ covering it up on the pretence of 'privacy' when really what you're doing is protecting your sponsorship deals then likely as not the shit will hit the fan.

If he'd come clean, apologised and kept his head down for a bit it would be yesterdays chip papers by now.

I agree with Hassled really. If a sportsman or entertainer just does their job and gets paid for that then I think their privacy should be respected. If they are going to celebrity parties, using their celebrity status to sell books about unrelated subjects [eg parenthood] or to endorse products then they are pretty much fair game. Especially if they also use their family as part of their image [the Beckhams would be an obvious example].

You can't expect and encourage the public to empty their wallets into your pocket and not be interested in your doings.
