This is more of a 'Am I being Ridiculous?' I think!

They are 4.5 and 20 months.

'Bridge over Troubled Water' is their favourite album now Confused. They both absolutely love it, especially 'Cecilia' which is now known as 'the clap-bang song'.

But DD has picked up more of the lyrics than I thought she would Blush and now sings 'making love in the afternoon' at the top of her voice in the back of the car. Of course she has no idea what it means but should I stop putting the CD on before she starts to figure it out?! Also a tad concerned about the whores on 7th Avenue, although she hasn't started singing that one yet. (DH suggested changing it to the horse on 7th Avenue...).

Should I switch back to the nursery rhymes? It's such a great album...

The whores on 7th Avenue - is that from 'the Boxer'?

IHeartKingThistle · 20/05/2011 19:11

Yep. They love the 'la-la-la' bits at the end!

lololololololol

My mom used to fast forward that song (cassette tape) My brother & I used to listen to it when she wasn't around and try to figure out what making love in the afternoon meant. Also the bit in the Boxer about the 'whores on 7th Avenue.'

ajandjjmum · 20/05/2011 19:13

My kids both used to go to sleep to that album when they were babies. Brings back some happy memories. Smile

culturemulcher · 20/05/2011 19:13

Mine sing along too. I've had a similar thought about the lyrics, but really - how many pop songs did we sing along to before we were old enough to know that every time they said 'come' they didn't mean advance this way, please?

Eglu · 20/05/2011 19:13

YANBU. They are hardly the worst lyrics in the world.

jetgirl · 20/05/2011 19:14

As a child I sang along to The sound of silence and Bridge over troubled water, wonderful albums! Let them enjoy it, I don't think it will harm them!

IHeartKingThistle · 20/05/2011 19:14

Oh no, see I knew I was a terrible mother!

Brilliant album - I used to listen to it when I was really young - I wouldn't worry about it, i'd rather my kids listen to S&G than some of today's shite

Sqee · 20/05/2011 19:16

"horse on 7th Avenue" Hahaha! That's awsome!

I don't see the harm in it. Congratulations! Yor DCs have amazing taste in music! I would be very proud indeed! :o

schmee · 20/05/2011 19:17

I was playing this to my kids today and remembering how much I loved it as a child. Of course I thought "making love in the afternoon" meant the man was kneeling down and telling the lady how much he loved her - which was quite sweet on reflection. Carry on with it (or should I say "sail on silvergirl"?)!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 20/05/2011 19:20

What a lovely album! I remember singing along with the boxer, the whole family at the top of our voices driving down french motorways!

IHeartKingThistle · 20/05/2011 19:25

Aw, feeling all warm and fuzzy now!

Schmee LOVE your interpretation of that line!

For years and years I really did think wistfully of the horse on 7th Avenue. What was it doing there?

Cecilia was banned in some African country (Nigeria?) because the wife of the President was Cecilia.

IHeartKingThistle · 20/05/2011 19:30

Oh Hassled, that is brilliant.

The horse on 7th avenue! That's lovely Grin

We used to sing along to the old Dr Hook and the medicine show tapes . We had no idea about the words we were singing just sang along .

Lots about drugs and the freakers ball has to be heard to be believed .

thecatatemygymsuit · 20/05/2011 19:34

yanbu, of course not, it's all good. i was brough up on S&G and fully intend to inflict it on DD at some point. I have fond memories of my mum belting out 'Baby Driver' as she drove her intrepid Renault 4 back in the 70's Grin.

I used to like Richard corey, and the orgies on his yacht! Grin

Ahh, Dr Hook. 'A little bit more'. Beautiful but dirty as I now realise.

SmallerClanger · 20/05/2011 19:46

I've been thinking exactly the same. My parents had a Greatest Hits album which we played in the car. I have just bought the CD version as we are off to Glastonbury, and want the girls to know some Paul Simon songs. But now worrying about the lyrical content! (I can also remember every lyric and the order of the tracks after not hearing it for over 25 years!) Will have to do loud coughing at certain points!

travellingwilbury · 20/05/2011 19:46

My favourite was the one about going through paris in the sports car .

When I listen to it now I realise she is depressed and kills herself at the end .

No idea at the time .

suzikettles · 20/05/2011 19:49

I remember being mortified at the age of about 10 whenever Cecilia came on in the car. Twas "the rude song".

With regards to The Boxer though, I assumed it was "the horse" until I was well into my teens Blush ("just a-coming to the horse on 7th Avenue". Could be a landmark or something surely..?)
