To get DD a new pushchair when she is 3 years old?

MumblingRagDoll · 19/05/2011 12:42

Inspired by the lady who wanted to know if buying a 4th pushchair for a 4 month old was silly.

DD turned three in March and still uses the pushchair for school runs...we leave it behind when we go to town sometimes but not aalways as she get tired still..the one we have is dirty and I have tried to clean it but it just won't come up nicely....DH says we should make do with what we have as it still works fine....but I think a rubby pushchir is like a grubby coat and is just not on.

I HAVE really tried to clean it.....but to no avail.

And if am not BU can anyone reccomend a decent lightweight pushchair that's comfy and is not pink.

thank you!

my dd4 cant even walk 1/8th of a mile at 2.5yrs old. Sad

get the buggy. makes your life easier, makes toddlers life easier, and if she wants to walk you can pile the shopping it in

MumblingRagDoll · 19/05/2011 14:24

The liners look good....I will look at those for her.

I like the quote about people judging yet most people are on their fat arses all day in cars....I walk miles....it WOULD take me hours and hours to complete a basic shpping trip. People on here are funny with their "ideal" children.

Sorry I think you are daft. If it was broken get a new one but its grubby?!?!? Use a seat liner if you are so bothered, or ask around to see if anyone else finished with theirs.

Mandy2003 · 19/05/2011 14:55

I don't drive either! Due to a slight heart problem my son was still going the mile to school in his buggy when he was 4.5. We used it for the first term in Reception but he gradually got better able to walk. Everywhere else we went by bus as I recall.

Due to mobility problems myself I always found it much easier to get about with the buggy so I do miss it, yes. Luckily I live nearer a bus stop now.

I have got the Demon Tartan Trolley, but it does hurt my back to use it. I'm sure one of those push along wire cage ones would be the answer but I do think they are relentlessly grannyish Sad

But shopping trolleys don't have to be tartan - FUNKY!!

vivi12 · 19/05/2011 14:56

Would agree op, i like that comment too - it's very easy to say ditch the buggy if you're driving to the shopping centre, letting them out for a bit and driving back. I found the buggy a necessity or we would have been housebound. Particularly if you're going to an activity, followed by picking up some shopping, followed by stopping by at the park, followed by walking home. We could be out from 9am to 6pm sometimes - I really don't think a 2 or 3 year old would last that long, especially if it's pouring with rain. Where are they meant to rest if the weather's bad?

MumblingRagDoll · 19/05/2011 14:57

foreveronadiet I tink YOU'RE daft....for not reading the thread to the end.

And less is more...remember that with your question marks in future!!!!!!!!!!

This has made me laugh,op if you want one and can afford it do so !

Maybe a jogging one would be good ?

Those that scoff at 3 year olds in the buggy don't seem to be so annoyed by those Grin

My eldest stayed in one till 4 ish ,but could walk for miles also !
My youngest son till about 3 ,also walked sometimes
My daughter(2) HATES the buggy ,to get her in is nearly impossible ~she walks everywhere .

Here in the US , it would be a non-issue ~I see masses of Mums (where we live ) with 5 year olds in them .
Nobody at school teases them ,it is just accepted .

And op if you don't drive ... it makes perfect sense to keep things as easy as possible for as long as possible Grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 19/05/2011 15:08

You should not be so proud regarding the shopping trolleys.

My DD turned 3 in april, so not long ago, and she has not used her buggy since about 2.8yo. She walks everywhere with me. We don't drive so we walk a half hour walk to the shops round the shops and home again and she is quite happy with that. We go to the city and walk about all day, our legs are aching but she's still going strong!

My nieghbour bought me a present for looking after her cats once and she turned up with a shopping trolley. I was Hmm I wouldn't be seen dead with it. But then DH had to work overtime and I had to carry the shopping on my own. It was a struggle, so took the trolley next time. Was sure people were laughing/staring at me, but seriously they weren't. I see loads of young mums with toddlers about with one (I'm only 23) Mine is black with pink polka dots on. I couldn't live without it now. If it broke I'd definitely buy a new one. Don't be so proud, be practical.

IMO, buying a new buggy because it is grubby is just silly and encouraging your DD not to learn to walk long distances.

Just10moreMinutes · 19/05/2011 15:10

YANBU - I bought a new buggy for my DD when she was 3. The old one was tired and grubby, and - to be honest - I fancied a new one.

OK she hasn't had masses of use out of it as her use of the pushchair was already trailing off, but I still think it was worth every penny.

If you can afford it and it'll make you feel happier do it. Having a pushchair that bugs you is like having to wear a coat you don't like every day..

HeadfirstForHalos · 19/05/2011 15:16

You can get some fab trolleys, the leopard print one is Bet Lynch i agree!

I don't know how to do links (must find out) but I will be getting something along these lines

www.diva-stores.com/divacart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=32_155

I like the black and white stripey one :)

HeadfirstForHalos · 19/05/2011 15:17

But I won't be paying that for it! I have seen them lots cheaper than that.

BadRoly · 19/05/2011 15:17

Thank you MumblingRagDoll - you are adding hugely to my arguement for getting a new lightweight buggy for ds2 who will be 2 ery soon! Everyone I speak to thinks it is stooopid but I am still craving one.... Now which one shall we get? links arms with Mumbling to browse the pushchair porn....

BabyDubsEverywhere · 19/05/2011 15:17

Break the pushcahir you have...then get a new one Grin

My 3.8 year old gets in my double with DD (2.6) for the 5 minute walk home from nursery....i couldnt care less what other people think, hes is knackard when he finishes and those 5 minutes are enough to recoup a bit of energy so he can blast it round the house/garden when we get home. Only have comments on how amazing my pushchair is, (and it is, its the obaby double that has interchanging seats so they can see each other/away from each other/outwards/inwards, pretty cool)

Also, dont just think about your daily run for the pushchair, what about days out? Going round a theme park or large zoo or something means walking from about 10am until 4pm (does for us) Will a three year old really happily walk all that time. I will be keeping mine until DS is about 5 i think, tried my mates DS in whos 5 and he was quite comfy so will get my moneys worth! Fantastic for full days out where we would be really held back and miss out on things going at a 3yr olds pace.

YANBU Smile

alemci · 19/05/2011 15:20

I must admit my puschair/pram went through 3 kids, we did have a double buggy too which I sold on then I had a lightweight buggy.

I take your point about not driving but to me a new pushchair is a waste of money unless the other one is broken.

Wabbit · 19/05/2011 15:22

I'm sorry - In a buggy at 5 Years old in the US??? WTF? GRRRRRRRRRRRR - they're sooooo active at 5, a healthy 5 year old can run rings round an adult - literally and they should be allowed to.

That makes me cross - 3 years is ok, and I know some dawdlers need the support of knowing there's a buggy if they need one but 5? 5?

Mandy2003 · 19/05/2011 15:24

Smile @ Doley! Also in the US you have those little red metal carts everywhere to pull kids & shopping around in don't you?

Like this

Don't know why they've never caught on in Britain really?

BadRoly · 19/05/2011 15:27

I my kids have one Mandy2003. We got it for ds2's birthday last year. They mostly launch each other down the garden in it...

sincitylover · 19/05/2011 15:30

I found it useful to still have a buggy at 3/4 years as I was usually in a rush to get from DS1's primary school in the morning to ds2s nursery before going to work.

Also on holiday if you're out late and toddler wants to sleep easier to put them in buggy rather than carry them.

Blu · 19/05/2011 15:32

Unreasonable? I think it's called 'more money than sense'.
Make do and put the money in a savings account for your dd.

doley · 19/05/2011 15:32

@mandy !

Yes ,they are everywhere ...fantastic .

My friend had a massive plastic one that could fit 2 kids, complete with cup holders !

I wish they would catch on in the UK ,maybe they would be considered more socially aceptable Wink

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 19/05/2011 15:36

coccyx is on to something there.

I didn't even have a child seat. At 3, ds could balance on my bike (I forget exactly how, but it was perfectly safe) and I'd push the bike to nursery, then whizz back in the blink of an eye.

Pick up I did the opposite. It was fab.

I think you're daft to get a new buggy just because your current one is grubby - if it was broken I'd suggest a £20 cheapy.

doley · 19/05/2011 15:37

wabbit there is not the force for kids to grow up so fast here .

It is refreshing .

American teens are very self -confident ,I don't see it doing any harm here.

They are allowed a longer 'babyhood' as they start school later anyway .

doley · 19/05/2011 15:38

plus wabbit I don't get why it would make you angry ?:)

Not your child ,not your problem !
