2 year old DS has ripped up the sunflower seedling I have been nurturing. We live in a flat (no garden) so I never grow things from seed. I decided to attempt to grow a sunflower indoors and it has been thriving. I lovingly staked it today as it was getting a bit bendy. Anyhoo, it's dead now and I find myself unreasonably upset. What's wrong with me?

YANBU and nothing's wrong with you as it's entirely natural to feel upset when others (metaphorically) trample on our efforts.

Sow another one now - better still, make it 3 or 4, and give them a chance of survival to full glorious bloom by placing the pot(s) out of your ds's reach.

Involve your ds in the sowing/growing/watering process, and be grateful you didn't let him loose in someone's garden,

Seymore - we moved into a place with a garden two and a half years ago....having not had a garden of my own all my adult life.

Anyway...I got to work last spring planting and sowing all my veggies and herbs, as I had always wanted to grow my own. All was going well until three months on when dd ripped up everything in 10 mins flat - she was just 1 and a half. I didn't see her do it, but my eldest did....and being the space cadet he often is, didn't think to stop her.
In 10 years I can honestly nothing has ever made me so fucked off and angry as that did. All my hard work ruined. I went absolutely beserk...shouting my head off like some scraggy old fishwife...while the neighbours were party to the whole madwoman routine. Then I went to bed and cried for an hour. Gutted.

It is awful when you've put work into something only to have some little gremlin that doesn't understand or care about it, unceremoniously tear it up. I know.

This year I have fenced off everything!

You can still sow more seeds - it's not too late...keep them out of his reach though.

Oh dear I misread your thread as destruction of a planet!

YANBU to mourn for a little living thing that you nurtured.

Ha claret maybe my sunflower is a metaphor for the planet! DS is in disposable nappies after all...

izzywhizzy thanks, I will plant some more and hope that DS takes pity on the next ones, but I will put them out of the little blighter's reach to be on the safe side.

Pictish That sounds like a reasonable response to me! I'm sure I would have been absolutely hysterical if he'd ripped up a whole garden's worth, my lip was quivering over a single sunflower. I hope you get a good harvest this year.
