Over accusations of "Stealth Boasting".....

....being thrown at random on MN?

I see this in a lot of threads.

An OP comes on to ask for opinions or insights, and provides "relevant" information pertaining to his/her situation, perhaps adds one or two details which may be above the norm (whatever that it) and someone sneaks in.......oh so self righteously...."I wonder if this is a stealth boast". [Eye Roll]

If anyone needs opinions or insights, of course they will try to include as much helpful details as possible. If they don't, they are accused of lying, if they do, they are accused of boasting. If you do, you're damned. If you don't, you're damned.

There are over a million of us, MNers. Is it beyond the realm of possibility to imagine that some will be significantly well off than others, and that it (their lifestyles) will be reflected in their threads?

So, why accuse them of stealth boasting?

It makes me very very unreasonable!!!!

orry hullygully been speaking Dutch all morning and have an overwhelming urge to double my m's and s's.

MsToni · 17/05/2011 15:09

Psssssss!!!!

I just posted on the prillock thread about Sophie, the giraffe. Usually, its Sophie Le Giraffe but because I don't want the resident nest of vipers to think I'm up my arse, I've dumbed down.

Am I getting the hang of belonging?

But you really need to feel the quality of Farrow and Ball.

Pagwatch · 17/05/2011 15:13

Very good.

But if you use strike out you have to put in an alternate phrase or it makes no sense. You have posted I don't want the resident to think I am up my arse.
That makes mumsnet sound like a cell.

You want to put in something instead of nest of vipers to replace it.

And it's pillock.

Hths.

it depends what you mean though. Some people do stealth boast. Someone was on here a couple of weeks ago saying that they were worried they weren't doing the best for their children because they were "only" stashing away 800 quid a month in a savings account and only half a million quid's worth of property and life insurance that only covered them for a million quid etc etc. I'm exaggerating but only very slightly. I genuinely don't see why you would put that sort of detail on mumsnet as opposed to a financial website if your motivation were genuinely to get financial advice.
And don't even get me started on the people who say "I had a wonderful pain free birth. Why can't other people who didn't give me credit." That's definitely stealth boasting.

Hullygully · 17/05/2011 15:14

I think she meant the resident.

did you understand the Sophie bit?

Hullygully · 17/05/2011 15:15

Beertricks.

That is why your children will grow up warped and deprived. No paint feeling.

TheDerailer · 17/05/2011 15:15

I think the problem with "stealth boasting" is things like:

"When I gave birth to my child in the exclusive and very expensive private hospital called ***"

which bears no relation to the thread at hand. It's a bit weird.

I wouldn't say "When I gave birth to my child in the local NHS hospital called "
Why would one?

Pagwatch · 17/05/2011 15:15

Non

TobyLerone · 17/05/2011 15:15

It's 'prillock' since that thread, Pag.

MsToni · 17/05/2011 15:16

Thanks Pag - I'll up my game re the format for posting.

And kaosandkisses, I'm googling it as we speak chat.

Hullygully · 17/05/2011 15:17

See, I don't notice all that stuff about hospital name dropping etc, because I am just super lovely and take it all at face value and don't make value judgments. Just who I am, really.

TheDerailer · 17/05/2011 15:19

Oh yes Hully. I can see you are a very lovely person who only takes things at face value...I'm a bit like that as well and when I gave birth to my daughter at The Portland, the nurse said exactly the same thing to me. How strange.

Pagwatch · 17/05/2011 15:19

Oh is it?

Actually that's quite good. I quite like prillock. I doesn't have a different meaning does it?

Excellent striking out use with chat

Hullygully · 17/05/2011 15:20

That is strange! When I gave birth (had her chopped out) to my dd, the docs all laughed and said I'd had a sumo wrestler. She was large, screaming and covered in vernix.

Hullygully · 17/05/2011 15:21

She's a quick learner that MsToni and her odd animal references.

TobyLerone · 17/05/2011 15:21

Nope, no different meaning Grin

Just an excellent typo.

MsToni · 17/05/2011 15:22

Jeckadeck - I see your point and you are absolutely right - perhaps hypothetically - the person in the first part did not intentionally mean to.......but that's water under the bridge. :)

Now, the second part, no comment...Biscuit we have a smiley for that!!!!

OP posts:
kaosandkisses · 17/05/2011 15:23

Pff, my babies fell out onto Rose petals in the moonlight after 5 minutes of mild contractions.

But seriously, that Farrow and Ball paint...

Pagwatch · 17/05/2011 15:26

It has been a very useful thread.
I have prillock to use now which I am sure will come in useful.
And I am going to rename the animals starting with Penis le Dog. Or le penisdog ?

Oh. Not sure now

TobyLerone · 17/05/2011 15:28

I have to go home and kick Arseface le Cat.

someone starts a thread asking for advice but really wants to boast? Honestly haven't picked up on that

No, can't say I pick up on stealth boasting - totally blatant boasting yes of course when it is along the lines "How talented is my dc" but stealth, no not really. Wouldn't even notice someone posting which exp pvt hospital they gave birth in, it would go straight past me tbh

kaosandkisses · 17/05/2011 15:32

Beertricks, it really is. Look, I'd love to stay and chat but I've got to run (collecting my son from Gifted and Talented club).
