.....to feel dreadfully guilty that I used to think no smoke without fire and it could never happen to a family like us........... until it did........ and then you realize that the protective, well educated middle class mother challenging of misdiagnosis or non diagnosis is exactly the profile they have typecast.

How does anyone ever get over these accusations as it is all still very current for us? Watching the programme it would appear you dont however many years pass. How many lives need to be destroyed?

To be honest I am still confused about what actually happened to Southall as the programme seemed to end very abruptly. I have googled him and there is mothing beyond 2009. Is he actually struck off the medical register or not, and did the police take any action on him.

Can imagine how traumatic it was for you to watch the programme.

Hardhatonamission · 12/05/2011 23:29

He was struck off the medical register and he didn't succeed in his appeal against the GMC at the High Court.

Police didn't take action as the CPS felt there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute or similar. The man just came accross as a self serving sanctimonious arrogant arse.

Thanks hardhat but the prgoramme did end rather suddenly. He certainly came across as being cock-sure of himself. However that first clip of the mother smothering the baby and seeing the baby's legs kicking like mad was very upsetting. I suspect he did uncover a few cases of MSBP (now called something else?) but that he got over zealous and began seeing such cases "crawling out of the woodwork" and many parents and children must have suffered.

IMissSleep · 13/05/2011 08:56

That clip of the mother smothering her baby was so distressing to watch. I broke down in tears :( Couldn't watch anymore after that.

Absolutely horrendous I agree but it doesnt prove munchausens by proxy she could have ben mentally ill or suffering severe PND or any other reason that people do harm their child. This doesnt mean that hundeds of others should suffer for the possibility that they might have this syndrome, often just because they fit a personality profile. It is too awful to think that doctors can use this to cover up their misdiagnosis or mistakes especially when challenged or complained about.

Sorry I feel sick when I hear of people being accused of MSbP. Anyone who has been accused knows that there is no defence. ANYTHING you do will be thought of as a symptom. If you don't do anything you will be wrong. The only advise I have is if you have been accused then they will tell you. Don't do anything until you are notified of the accusation as they will turn any action against you. When you know you have been accused remember they have to prove it. Don't give them any proof and remember a judge will always decide on the balance of probabilities what is in the best interests of the child. Most parents do not have MSbP, but many women are accused of it because they are educated in medical capacities and have a child with SN that they are being a careing mother and wanting everything that they can to help their child. You will place yourself in a situation and you will never win but if you keep hiding then women will keep on acusing other women just because they MIGHT have done someithing that can be OBSERVED by a 3rd party as something suspicious. If you went to help these children then try supporting their mothers.

I'm sorry if I'm being a bit dim, but I'm a bit confused about this thread. What is the program you're referring to? I assume you were wrongly accused of MSbp OP, how horrible for you. Sad

He was reinstated in May 2010, is currently registered and has a licence to practise.

Its very easy to check a Dr's status on the GMC website.

Click on 'check a Dr's registration status'.

Type in the name.

Press search.

Click on 'Dr history'

Its all there and you can do it for any Dr.

howitis · 20/05/2011 21:47

Bunglie · 20/05/2011 22:59
