To move a moped blocking my cars in my private drive to the road where they'll get a ticket?

I have just got home from a day out and some scumbag has parked/abandoned their moped in front of my cars in our private driveway (actually in our carport). Would it be unreasonable of me to move it to the public road where you have to pay to park from tomorrow morning? Or should I just call the council (or whoever deals with these things).

Why would someone move it into my carport? People are odd.

any more up-dates?

It's still there and looks likely to stay there. I asked our neighbours and they don't have a clue either. Maybe I should learn to ride it.

OMG Pimp My Ride time Grin

So it's 100% not stolen then? And the owner still hasn't turned up. Weird. Did the police take the number incase it's reported later on?

I think it's time to get creative with it now Grin

RJRabbit · 14/05/2011 08:17

Must've been stolen and unreported by the time you rang the police.

CurrySpice · 14/05/2011 08:19

Perhaps it was a gift!!

Cutiecat · 14/05/2011 08:29

How very strange. The police must be able to find the owner's adress from the dvla and contact them.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 14/05/2011 12:21

Presumeably, though, RJRabbit, the OP would have been asked for the registration number when she rang the police, and it would be on record at the police station, so if someone did ring in later to report it stolen, it would have flagged up on the system that it had been abandoned on the OP's drive.

Can the police advise how long before you can view it as abandoned and legally treat it as your own?

Snorbs · 14/05/2011 14:05

Does it have any signs of damage?

Maybe the owner of the bike got knocked off it outside your house. A helpful passer-by might have decided to move the bike off the road and somewhere safe while they were waiting for the ambulance to turn up.

SoupDragon · 14/05/2011 16:52

How can you learn to ride it? Do you have the keys?

Jbck · 14/05/2011 17:19

You can ask the DVLA for the keeper's details under the circumstances, I think it's £1 but it'd be worth it to find out if it's someone local who's forgottren where they've left it or too embarrassed to ask.

AttillaTheMum · 14/05/2011 17:58

i'd call the poilce again, Its effectively fly-tipping. Which means you can keep it!

gallicgirl · 14/05/2011 18:09

I have a friend who recently completed purchase on a house. They made the offer 5 months ago but the owner hadn't cleared all his belongings from the property by the time they took possession. They therefore started selling them!

I'm not sure how you stand legally with possession. The police probably won't do anything other than pass details on to the council. You can check on the DVLA website to see if it's taxed or not and if not you can then report it. The council will also get in touch with the registered keeper and give them a set amount of time to move the bike. If the owner fails to do so, then the council will so you probably need to move it back onto the public highway and off your land.

MortaIWombat · 16/05/2011 14:25

So, has it gone yet?

If still there after 24 hours I would have asked the police to remove it if it was on my property as it may be stolen and abandoned. I would have moved it either out of my property or somewhere awkward for them to find initially, but if no-one came after 24 hours I'd be telling the police it was abandoned.
I have very little land though so no space to store someone else's unwanted moped.

cremeeggsbenedict · 16/05/2011 16:01

Nope, still there.

It's tucked out of the way now, so not causing any problems. We let the police know about it so if it is reported stolen they should be able to work out where it is. I think it's best to leave it as is.

I would want it moved by now though, why is it best to leave it as it is? The police can trace the owner as they'll have access to the DVLA database. If someone parked a car on your land you'd be getting the police to move it, I'm not sure why a moped is any different.

cremeeggsbenedict · 16/05/2011 16:43

Least effort? It's out of the way and the authorities know. Was cross when I found it but now think it's a minor annoyance in the scheme of things. I agree that I'd get a car moved, but really truly CBA with the hassle of doing anything with this.
