To move a moped blocking my cars in my private drive to the road where they'll get a ticket?

I have just got home from a day out and some scumbag has parked/abandoned their moped in front of my cars in our private driveway (actually in our carport). Would it be unreasonable of me to move it to the public road where you have to pay to park from tomorrow morning? Or should I just call the council (or whoever deals with these things).

Why would someone move it into my carport? People are odd.

Could you not just lock your gates?

2rebecca · 09/05/2011 20:29

I wouldn't leave it there and would either move it or call the police, probably the former as police have better things to do.

activate · 09/05/2011 20:31

is it a gift to you?

I like the pretending it's a gift idea. Putting it in your shed if you had one and then saying "Oh but Uncle Ernie told me he'd got me something special for my birthday and that was (name of day you discovered it). I thought he'd forgotten to drop off the keys and have emailed him to thank him...

Why would you leave your moped in my drive on my birthday? Do you normally leave it in people's gardens? You are odd....

heliumballoons · 09/05/2011 21:03

I agree call the police and report before you move it. At least then you have confirmation its been dumped there by its owner - who quite frankly deserves any ticket he gets. Grin

ccpccp · 09/05/2011 22:00

If its on your property under your carport then move it. Its either been dumped or is a blatant pisstake by the owner. Either way its better out of the way.

PaperView · 09/05/2011 22:03

what did you do?

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 09/05/2011 22:07

Id report it to the police, then park it out of sight. If it isnt stolen, the owner will have to ask you where it is! They should be bloody ashamed of themselves!

cremeeggsbenedict · 10/05/2011 09:36

So police aren't interested, and neither are council. I like the idea of it being a present so have moved it - DH picked up the back and I wheeled it - so it's now behind my car and out of sight so if someone wants it back they can bloody well ask for it.

It does seem an odd place to be abandoned - it was almost deliberately parked in a way to block (albeit pathetically) two vehicles in a driveway. Highlighting its very existance. I'm sure more will happen but for now I will just carry on and maybe charge for storage when someone asks for it back.

So it wasn't stolen, then? Well - I would have lost my money, as I'd have bet that the people on here saying it was stolen were right. Explains why I don't gamble, though!

As the police and council aren't interested, I think you are doing the right thing by getting it out of the way. I think I'd also chain it to something, to ensure the owner has to ask for it to be released - if they've been cheeky enough to come onto your property once to dump it, I suspect they'd think nothing of having a good look around to find it if it isn't in view from the road.

I hope you have some nice plans for the release fee, when they do come back!!

frgaaah · 10/05/2011 10:50

OldMumsy, I hope you were joking.

A good many of these get stolen each year - 2 years ago, a cousin of mine was so chuffed at being able to travel to school (and see his dad - lives in the next village) independantly without relying on lifts all the time or having to use his bicycle (not ideal after dark due to no street lights on the national speed limit road linking them), but it was stolen and wrecked 5 weeks after buying it. Some people have no hearts.

If it is stolen, there is probably a very very upset young boy out there right now - please don't damage it for no reason.

Jaspants · 10/05/2011 10:57

How odd to park it on your drive causing an obstruction - didn't someone similar (Pag maybe?) have something similar with a car once?

harassedinherpants · 10/05/2011 11:01

We had a small lorry dumped in our works car park recently.

The police confirmed it wasn't stolen and said to put a note on it saying that if it's not removed within 7 day of X (date) you will have it disposed of.

You can then sell it or send to breakers yard. Can you move it so it's not blocking your cars, but is still on your property?

harassedinherpants · 10/05/2011 11:02

Sorry, I see you've already moved it!!

sb6699 · 10/05/2011 12:36

Is it really sad that I'm desperate to know what the owner is going to say when they return Grin

puddingface · 10/05/2011 13:35

cheeky bastard

cant wait to find out what they say when they come back haha

unwillingpuppysitter · 10/05/2011 13:49

It sounds very odd - why would anyone want to park their moped on your driveway when there is plenty of parking on the street? Mostly, mopeds don't need to pay for parking so presumably it was not to save money. Like you said, it is not effective blocking so it is unlikely to be someone with a grudge. Very strange. Do you by any chance have teenaged children? Wink my bet is that it IS a present form Uncle Ernie after all.

Jaspants · 11/05/2011 09:46

cremeeggs have they been back for it yet?

cremeeggsbenedict · 11/05/2011 14:24

Nope, it's still there - I might go a bit takeabreak or similar and see if I can turn it into a stylish naff planter or something - I'd love to see the look on someone's face if they came to collect it and it was full of lavendar or similar!

fairyglade · 11/05/2011 14:30

If it's in your way you have no choice but to move it, but I wouldn't move it far or on the road to get a ticket- as someone else has mentioned they know where you live!

wonka · 11/05/2011 14:53

I think you've done the best thing, put it somewhere they have to ask for it! Let us know what happens when they knock the door!

Flisspaps · 11/05/2011 14:54

YY to using it as a planter - pictures on profile required!

heliumballoons · 11/05/2011 18:44
