Someone said on the radio the evening standard is "in trouble"

Is It? The last I heard it had gone "free"

It has gone free. No clue if it's in trouble.

There used to be two free papers in the evening, London Paper and Lite (I think.

they withdrew both of those and made the ES free about 2 or so years ago.

It was bought by a Russian oligarch (Lebedev I think) and is now free.

ScousyFogarty · 08/05/2011 14:20

thanks I am pleased its not in trouble. I was amazed when it went free most evening papers are morning papers now. Ours is in ze MIDLANDS

It is free now. i haven't heard that it's in trouble but it's circulation is certainly much less than when you had to pay for it. Maybe it's in difficulties in obtaining income from advertising now? I really like the Es and was sorry it went free because i used to buy it every day from my local newsagent who no longer stocks it, probably because it would deter customers from buying other papers.

It has not been doing well for sometime and the move to free status was supposed to boost its fortunes. Don't know if it did but it seems unlikely. Pretty much all newspapers are in trouble at the moment. The Internet has changed the market they operate in and they are struggling to find a business model that works.

HazeltheMcWitch · 08/05/2011 14:32

Have to add - it is crap now - since it went free.
I find the content really lacking.
I used to love the mag, but I don't bother now.

ScousyFogarty · 08/05/2011 14:37

YEP....sad but true. I have taken an interest in newspapers all my life

I find the ES completely irrelevant to my lifestyle and way of life.

The Fri mag is full of 20 year old Sloane Chelsea set being applauded for setting up a jewellery/underwear/make-up business with Daddy's money and advertises high fashion items that are not in keeping with the austerity budgets of most of us living in London.

I have heard that the editor of ES used to edit Tatler. Says it all really.

HazeltheMcWitch · 08/05/2011 14:52

BootyMum - yes, Geordie Greig is the editor of Standard - used to b at helm of Tatler, exactly. He was a bit of a surprise choice as he is very 'society' - although did work on local papers early on in his journalistic career. But whilst at Tatler he'd become a friend of Lebedev. Maybe he was offered a pretty sum to move over? Why not, hey?
