Heard it several times on the radio today, and people on here seem to use it willy-nilly. If you're American, or from the Midlands, then fine. If not, it's MUM. With a U in the middle.

Grrrrr.

hate mum, mummy, mom, mommy .... prefer ma or mammy. then again i'm irish.

mumblechum1 · 08/05/2011 17:00

I'm not offended by mom or mum but absolutely loathe mam. It just sounds depressing.

Paul88 · 08/05/2011 18:59

Mam is the norm in Geordie land and it is not at all depressing.

It always makes me smile when combined with the standard suffix denoting surprise / embarrassment etc: "man", so you get "Mam, man!"

Most people around here (Leicestershire = East Midlands) use Mum, not Mom. But we do flatten vowels, etc, etc.

This thread is really starting to piss me off. Now hiding it. Fucking ridiculous.
