Heard it several times on the radio today, and people on here seem to use it willy-nilly. If you're American, or from the Midlands, then fine. If not, it's MUM. With a U in the middle.

Grrrrr.

OP posts:

YADBU! what does it matter, I am proud of where I come from, and of my accent! you go for it coffee

OP am really not sure what is has to do with you, my boys call me mom or mommy.

I rally take umbridge to your "if you're from the midlands then fine" what exactly are you implying?

gkys · 08/05/2011 12:26

gggrrrrr really

TidyDancer · 08/05/2011 12:29

gkys, I think the OP was just saying that use of 'mom' is widespread in the Midlands. I didn't see anything more in it that that....

iscream · 08/05/2011 12:30

I am Canadian. We say Mom here.

You're not the boss of me. :P

These type of comments make me think people outside of the UK are not really welcome at mumsnet. Negative comments on the way people speak are not friendly. If you do not work for mumsnet, should you really be making rules?

I don't think that's true iscream. I think the majority of people just like their language the way it is, but certainly have respect for the way others speak it, or speak their own language. I don't see anyone making rules, just giving opinions.

Continuum · 08/05/2011 12:50

But there will be people with all kinds of accents who use "mom" because people with moms can grow up anywhere! And how can you hear anyone's accent on here?!

iscream · 08/05/2011 12:57

TD, I stand corrected on the rules part. For some reason I thought I read a comment to not say mom.

iscream · 08/05/2011 12:58

This part. " If you're American, or from the Midlands, then fine. If not, it's MUM. With a U in the middle."

TidyDancer · 08/05/2011 12:59

Well, you sort of did, though I think you read it more strictly than you maybe should've done. I just don't think this needs to be made into the serious thing it is. I think it's coming down to preference, and some people are wording their comments poorly.

performancegirl · 08/05/2011 13:00

I'm from Birmingham- have always said mum, mom is just wrong!!

HighHeidYin · 08/05/2011 13:02

Good grief. The things people get worked up about Hmm

YABU The fact that people choose to say 'mom' is really not of importance. Thank goodness for free will and personal preference.

iscream · 08/05/2011 13:05

Yes, I know. Anyways, I don't want to be grounchy about such a silly thing on Mothers day. Outside to the garden to attack the dandylions.

gkys · 08/05/2011 13:15

I was thinking how truely eliltist the post sounds its ok for the midlanders and the americans but we must not speak this way is how it cam across to me, but then I'm from Brum

gkys · 08/05/2011 13:15

typo elitist

YANBU.

And the Midlands is not just Birmingham - most people in the whole of the Midlands don't say "Mom" AFAIK.

lubberlich · 08/05/2011 13:44

YANBU
It annoys the arse off me too.

theluckiest · 08/05/2011 13:45

YANBU. I'm a Brummie born and bred and I hate 'mom'. Particularly grating as DH is also a Brummy and uses it all the time. As does everyone in my bit of Birmingham. Makes my hackles rise (wherever one's hackles are). But YABU as it doesn't really matter what other people call their mothers does it?!

theluckiest · 08/05/2011 13:48

And I've just realised that I used two different spellings in my post when referring to a person from Birmingham. See? That's the evolution and flux of our wonderful, varied english language in practice....

flyingspaghettimonster · 08/05/2011 16:33

YABsoU... the internet isn't limited to just the UK!! I am British and find mom annoying, but use it often because I am chatting to my US friends, and my kids sadly call me Mommy as they are being raised here. really, it is a much more sensible spelling, although I can't actually pronounce it... and Mum is ugly... I like Mam best :-)

BabyDubsEverywhere · 08/05/2011 16:37

WEST midlands thing really i think.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 08/05/2011 16:52

I'm in the Midlands but north of Birmingham; North Midlands (best of both worlds Grin. I say mum. I also drop my aitches, flatten my vowels, add some where there aren't any and even use whole words that no-one's ever heard of.

Why is this a problem for you OP? YABU.
