What a strange question Confused

Chil1234 · 07/05/2011 12:34

Try NHS Direct as a first call. If they think 'broken' then go along. If they think 'sprained', invest in a splint and save yourself a long, long wait. :)

catsareevil · 07/05/2011 12:34

If your finger is sore enough that you think it is broken then I would get it looked at by someone who can diagnose the problem and decide if you need xrays etc.

I agree - strange question

worraliberty · 07/05/2011 12:38

NHS Direct are generally crap in my experience and I really don't think they're going to say anything other than get it X-Rayed.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/05/2011 12:41

Are you typing with your feet? Confused

valiumredhead · 07/05/2011 12:41

If it's finger all they will do is strap it to the one next to it ime

PumpkinBones · 07/05/2011 12:43

When my sister broke her finger, they didn't even do that - just taped up the broken one, and put a bandage thing covered the finger and looped over her hand.

loopylou6 · 07/05/2011 12:44

Wow Hmm witch just incase you didn't realise if you have 1 sore finger, you still have 7 to play around with.
I agree the question sounded a bit strange, but I just don't like taking up doctors time if it isn't totally needed.

Thank you to those who gave sensible replies without feeling the need to take the piss :)

Oh, I was going to suggest you might be typing with your nipples Blush

FutureNannyOgg · 07/05/2011 12:54

They probably won't x ray it as all they will do, broken or not, is bind it to the next finger. If you have wadding and tape you can do this at home without the 3 hour wait.

clam · 07/05/2011 12:56

Well, I suppose the question is, what difference will it make to you to have an official diagnosis. In terms of actual treatment, there's nothing they will do that you couldn't do yourself, namely strap it to a splint and the next-door finger.
My DS hurt his little finger playing basketball recently - bent it right back and it became very swollen and bruised. For myself I'd probably have just "got on with it" but this was a child, not me, and I'm a Good Mother Smile so dutifully sat in 'Urgent Care' for several hours with him. Yes, he'd broken it, but it was excruciating watching some inept nursing bloke attempting to strap it up badly. Looked like something out of 'The Generation Game' at the end. Got my nurse friend to do it again neatly when we got home. Beyond that, the only use was quoting it as a definite for excusing him PE for a couple of weeks. I'm guessing that's not a concern in your case though?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/05/2011 12:57

Loopylou.. Don't be so touchy, I didn't mean to offend you. I was just impressed at your use of the shift key.

I agree with the other posters who've said that the hospital won't do anything other than tape it up... and you'll probably have a long wait at A&E as yesterday was Friday night.

Hope you're not in too much pain.

mybrainsthinkingfuckyou · 07/05/2011 12:58

Husband broke finger - as above it was covered in bandage and strapped to next one. Told not a lot they could do - he still cannot bend it properly now.
A+E was for him a waste of his own time.

ChaoticAngelQueenofAnarchy · 07/05/2011 12:59

Do you have a minor injuries unit near you? Our local one has x-ray facilities so if you do then it might be a better option than A&E.

justabigdisco · 07/05/2011 13:29

if you think it might be broken you should get an Xray, not just strap it up, because some finger fractures are worse than others and can cause probs in the future.

the best time to attend A+E is first thing in the morning, IME

Ambi · 07/05/2011 13:32

I'd go to NHS walk in centre.

TheVisitor · 07/05/2011 13:33

I'd get it looked at.

clam · 07/05/2011 13:40

Don't go on a Monday!

pinguwings · 07/05/2011 13:43

Take Ibuprofen for pain and it helps healing process. Have you got a walk in centre with xray facilities? Might be quicker.

Happymm · 07/05/2011 14:13

Speaking as a specialist in hand trauma I would suggest going to A&E and getting an Xray. You don't know if or how it's fractured. If a simple break, yes, they may tape it. However, if into the joint, rotated or mal-aligned you may need an op to fix it. You may also need hand therapy after to get things moving/increase function. Good luck.

loopylou6 · 07/05/2011 15:46

Thanks everyone. Just got back, had an X ray and I have a fracture. Taped up and referred to fracture clinic :)

I have a broken finger, and had to get an op to get joint rotated as I twisted it.Also have rods put in it.Don't mess about with fingers....lol

Okonomiyaki · 07/05/2011 17:23

I broke the tip of my finger and had to have physio!

I did make this face Confused though when the midwife insisted on recording it on my antenatal notes.

loopylou6 · 07/05/2011 17:52

Omg that doesn't sound good, hope you're both fine now. Hopefully I won't have that problem coz mines only fractured not broke.
