to be annoyed that my periods seem to have returned

Aargh! Ds2 is 5.5 months, and I'm Breastfeeding. After ds1, my periods returned after just less than 5 months but he was formula fed, so I'd hoped I'd get away with it for longer than this! In fact, given that we'll be having no more babies (sob), I'd have been happy for them never to return.

My first one after ds1 was carnage - I couldn't go out for days, so fingers crossed it's better this time. Has anyone had a better experience the second time round?

Same here, DD is 6 months ebf.Hmm
Really wasn't expecting it so soon. So it's normal to be mental heavy? I was up to empty mooncup twice in the night. Blush

scubamummy · 05/05/2011 11:35

Yep me too - DD is ebf but got my first period when she was 3 months old! Angry

Ugh! At my 6w check, my gp specifically said, if you're bfeeding you don't need to think about contraception just yet. I was Shock at this, as she didn't go on to give me any more info on this at all. Luckily I researched this a bit online, and found out that it's not at all foolproof.

Greentig, I think (like most things related to pg and babies), anything is "normal" when it comes to first periods. As I said, after ds1, it was horrendous. And it started the day before my return to work, would you believe?! But it was the first 24hrs that were the worst. I had to change super-plus tampax AND nighttime pad every 30 mins or more. Awful. After the first day it was like a normal but quite heavy period. Fwiw, after I'd had ds1, I never experienced cramping again with periods...

vmcd28 - I think your gp needs some retraining! (unless she thinks that breastfeeding leaves you far too exhausted to even consider having sex Wink)

I'm a bit concerned about first periods post baby being horrendous! DS2 is 5 months and still no sign of a period (well apart from the odd cramp now and again).

After giving birth to DS1 I bleed for about 7 weeks, stopped for a week and then started bleeding again (although very lightly) for a few days. It was only when I started bleeding again 4 weeks later that I realised my periods had returned and I'd completely missed out on the break I felt I was due that you're "supposed" to get when EBF. But at least it was light. While I'm enjoying my current break I'm not sure it's worth it if I get floored by my periods returning!

That's worrying advice! Although I'm convinced that GPs only ask you about contraception at your 6 week check to see what state your pelvic floor is in (if you manage not to piss yourself laughing then it's OK).

DD1 was EBF and I got my period when she was 9 weeks.
DD2 is EBF (and I'm tandem feeding) and I got my period back at 7 weeks. GP assures me I am healthy but just 'unlucky' Angry

IgnoringTheChildren · 05/05/2011 13:44

EauRouge that is very 'unlucky' - particularly seeing as I know of several mums who FF and still went between 4-10 months before their periods returned!

IMissSleep · 05/05/2011 13:49

Mine came back 2 WEEKS after DS was born!! I was breastfeeding and did so for 6 months. A friend of mine used breastfeeding as contraception for a year, another friend did the same and was pregnant 3 months after birth of her first DD.

EzrasMummy · 05/05/2011 14:03

I bled for about 3 weeks then straight after, I had my period! AND I
was breastfeeding!
