I just don't get the apathy with regard to this referendum tomorrow.

In what circumstances would you ever reject the opportunity to have a second choice option?

"Ok, if I can't have that one, I'd like this one instead."

What is it that people don't like about that? I am honestly baffled. Obviously, PR would be a better option, but we've got to take what we can get when it comes to reforming the voting system, this will just be a small step. If the no vote wins, we will never get another opportunity to vote for change.

If you are voting no, I would genuinely like to know your reasons why!

Which word do you not understand?

carminaburana · 05/05/2011 19:04

I understand the words - it's just the way you've put them together has resulted in a pile of wank

ChippingIn · 05/05/2011 19:09

Why - do you vote BNP?

carminaburana · 05/05/2011 19:18

Tory actually

BurntFingers · 05/05/2011 21:36

I understood it perfectly - everyone should have one vote for one party, if your party doesn't get the most votes and get in then it's a shame but tough. Why should someone be able to choose to vote say BNP first, have their vote count towards their hope of getting the BNP into government (although I'm well aware a lot of hot things would freeze over before that actually happened) and then when that 'attempt' is evident to have failed then get to support another party into hopefully getting through (and so on if that one doesn't). If someone wants to vote BNP (or any other party, but they do seem such a good example) their vote should be cast on that party and if they don't get it then it's gone, gives everyone a fair choice then.

OTheHugeManatee · 05/05/2011 21:42

I find the idea of BNP voters' opinions getting counted more than once especially unappealing. Effectively it would mean that voters for marginal parties would be courted especially hard - ie lots of parties vying to be second choice for cretins people whose first choice is the BNP. No thanks Hmm

TiggyD · 05/05/2011 22:22

Under FPTP BNP supporters would just keep voting Tory.

The BNP vote is strongest in Labour areas because many people living in them see the non stop labour 'PC' policies seeming to favour ethnic minorities at their expense, hence the backlash.

Unpalatable but true.

Thank you Burnt & OTheHuge - I didn't think I'd suddenly started posting in another language!

Well, not long now until we see if the No's have rightly won :)

oohlaalaa · 06/05/2011 13:15

DH and his parents voted No. Their reasoning was that it would be more expensive to implement the three options, and they do not like waste, especially as in their mind the current system works.

I voted Yes, as I'd like to see things shaken up a bit, particularly when it comes to the safe seats and some parties having very little influence, if any.

carminaburana · 06/05/2011 13:20

ChippinIn;

I really must apologise to you. I was skim reading your post last night whilst putting on my boots (and therefore didn't read it properly) - having re-read it just now you made perfect sense.

Sorry.

carminaburana · 06/05/2011 13:26

Although it's looking like a NO to AV if exit polls are to be believed.

ChippingIn · 06/05/2011 13:40

carmina - thank you for your apology :) I was less than patient in my reply to you - so please accept my apology in return.

It will be interesting to see what the result is.

Ohhlaalaa - I would like to see a shake up too. However, I would like them to take their time and find a system that really works, one what changes the way the country is run. As I said earlier the NZ MMP system is a really good one. I'm not opposed to change at all... but I don't want change for change sake, to a worse system than we already have, which I believe AV would be. But hey, we're all entitled to our own opinion and a (single - harumph) vote.

carminaburana · 06/05/2011 13:49

Smile accepted.

And yes, I can't wait for final result.
