In case the conservatives sneak in and kick the buggery out of our country like they have done to England, im voting SNP so we can continue to have free higher education, free prescriptions and a 5 year council tax freeze.

IHateLivingHere · 04/05/2011 21:13

I made the comment because, after living here for 4 years and being subjected to the sort of crass racist comments the Dundonians seem to make every day about the English, I'm completely fed up with it and can't wait to leave this place. Andy Murray is the worst for it (although he isn't a Dundonian)!!

The word xenophobe applies to most of the Scottish People I know.

Aimsmum · 04/05/2011 21:15

I will be voting tomorrow.

For the first time ever I feel really undecided over who to vote. I will be voting yes to AV, but in my constituency only have the 4 main parties.

I would never vote Tory, or Lib Dem now, not so keen on Labour and the Brian Soutar funding really puts me off SNP (although I don't know much about the other parties funding, I just hate his homophobia)

I agree about what has been said re council tax freezes and free prescriptions.

Oh and yanbu to urge people to vote, I really don't understand why people don't bother to use their vote.

WentworthMillerMad · 04/05/2011 21:16

Your living in the wrong part of Scotland, just like England it has it's biggots. Glasgow west end is a Mini london. Open minded!

WentworthMillerMad · 04/05/2011 21:16

My experience is comparable to SGM, and I've been here nigh on 10 years.

Voted by post already.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2011 21:21

How's Andy Murray worse for it, seeing as he lives with his English fiancee?

OooohShiny · 04/05/2011 21:21

based purely on my personal experiences of most of the MSPs I've voted SNP, apart from Wee Eck who's a bit of an arse when you meet him the rest are all hard working MSPs who are not the brain dead incompetents we had to spoon feed in the last administration Hmm

Iain Gray.....Gray by name and most definitely Gray by nature....he used to come into the smoke room (when we still had them) at work and would look utterly terrified if anyone so much as looked at him....he is not a leader!!

YANBU at all to encourage people to vote, it baffles me that so many people don't see the importance of voting.

I am still undecided as to who to go for. As previously said, I'm not keen on the SNP's headline grabbing policies, nor on Aex Salmond if I'm honest. I do think it'll be an SNP majority this time though, and although I'm not sure where I stand on independence, I am starting to think a referendum is the fairest option so that public opinion can be measured and listened to.

My list vote is going to the Greens. My constituency vote will probably go to the Lib Dems, but I am swaying because our current (SNP) MSP is very good and I would be happy for her to continue.

Definitely voting YES to AV.

K999 · 04/05/2011 21:23

I think, in the main, us Scots are pretty friendly, welcoming folk! Smile

UndiscoveredApprentice · 04/05/2011 21:25

I have struggled to decide whether AV is good for us or not. However, given what I have liked most about the last few Scottish governments, of all hues, is that they have HAD to compromise and work with one another, then I think a broader mix of parties can only be a good thing.

I think compromise is a good thing.

So I think I will vote for AV, even though I find it all a bit bemusing.

AberdeenAngusina · 04/05/2011 21:27

About three years ago I was sitting across a train aisle from this woman about my age I thought I recognised. I smiled and said "hello" and she smiled and said "hello" and I said "I'm sorry, I can't remember where I know you from? Did you have a child at tadpoles swimming lessons?" And she said "No, you might know me because I'm a politician." It was Wendy Alexander!! I was mortified I hadn't recognised her! She was very pleasant, and not travelling first class, either. Crammed into cattle class with the rest of us, reading what looked like a serious book.

"and then we can all sit back and laugh while they sink"

What a nasty statement and there was really no need. Do you mean ordinary Scottish people like me slaving away working full time as a Nurse in the NHS - you would sit back and take pleasure "sinking"?? Nasty, nasty.

My best pal has experienced horrendous attitudes to her Scottish accent living in England with her English husband but I am not stupid enough to classify the whole English nation as the same because of this.

kaumana · 04/05/2011 21:37

Wow -Hate - I don't think I'd like to live where you do either if people are like that . Where I live (Edinburgh) the only time I notice any "them and us " is when the six nations is on but only in a good natured way, I wouldn't like to be in a pub with fans of both Hearts and Hibs when there is a derby. THAT would be heated.

Yes, I will be voting.

Not for the SNP because of the free prescriptions , their energy programme (completely unfeasible), council tax freezes and their education policy.

And No to AV.

loflo · 04/05/2011 21:42

A definite vote here for SNP - Alex Salmond is a really genuine bloke (have met him through work). Ian Gray speaks out his dowp. So SNP it is and probably 2nd vote to Green. Still to be persuaded one way or the other on AV.

ifeellove · 04/05/2011 21:45

I'll be voting. Yes to AV. Second vote to the Greens and not quite decided on my first vote

claretandcheese · 04/05/2011 21:47

Re: prescriptions, apparently if they were made free for people with cancer and long term serious conditions as well as people who have been exempted for a long time due to low income the costs of administering the system would outweigh the fees received from the small number of people left paying.

I'm voting for AV too. It's not perfect but I don't want to hang on for something better only to be told that the population did not want a change to the voting system and we are stuck with FPTP for another generation.

Would not vote Labour again and as for the Liberals I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them now. So it looks like Green and SNP, not sure in what order.

dementedma · 04/05/2011 21:48

I have to agree with Hate sadly. Obviously one has to generalise in a debate like this and we do have many wonderful Scottish friends, but I have experienced more racism here than in any of the many countries my family have lived in over the years. I am not talking about 6 nations banter - that's great and fun - I'm talking about verbal and physical abuse for being an English person living in Scotland.
Based purely on my own and my siblings' observations - and between the 5 of us we have lived and worked in USA, New Zealand, mainland Europe (several countries) and China, as well as England and Republic of Ireland - Scotland is by far the worst for xenophobia and racism.
Who cares who runs this country, they are welcome to it.

Newgolddream · 04/05/2011 21:49

And I dont think I will be voting for the SNP, would never vote liberal again (I have before) after them jumping into bed with the Tories, realistically that only leaves Labour. Dont think the NHS is very safe in the SNPs hands.

kaumana · 04/05/2011 21:54

dementedma - just out of interest where do you live? Going by what you and Hated have expressed I must be living in a bubble?!

Newgolddream - I agree with your comments re the NHS

claretandcheese · 04/05/2011 21:54

dementedma, It's a good job are no xenophobic or racist English people.

Newgolddream · 04/05/2011 21:54

dementedma - well actually I as a ordinary working class Scot care about who runs the country. Who are you referring to when you say "they"?
And yes you are generalising - do you want me to list all the horrible things that have happened to my friend in the 8 years she was living in England? No? Of course not because its only those terrible Scottish people who abuse the English, could never happen as bad the other way round. Hmm. Well they finally gave up 2 years ago and moved to Scotland - all their kids have English accents and have never had a problem at school.

nijinsky · 04/05/2011 21:55

I'm not voting as there is no point - in Scotland, socialist always gets in and has done for the last 80 years. ie its either Labour or SNP. I'm sick of my vote never counting. Must be the only country in the world where higher taxes are a vote winner. I'm moving out if we get independence though.
