to think that Margaret Mitchell really did intend for Scarlett O'Hara to win Rhett back and for them to live happily ever after?

She just didn't get around to writing it herself... :)

I've just finished (re) reading Gone With the Wind. I do hope so, she finally grew up in those last few pages and I did feel for her.

Milngavie · 04/05/2011 18:11

The sequel is.......interesting!

bubbleymummy · 04/05/2011 18:13

Me too Indith!

Miln - I haven't read it for about 8 years so I must not have been too impressed! I can't remember it too well but I read it straight after reading GWTW for the first time and I just didn't take to the different writing styles at all.

Same here, and the bizarre csection sequence was very surreal! I read it years ago after finding it in the library and just couldn't see Scarlett being as she is portrayed in the second book.

bubbleymummy · 04/05/2011 18:17

I don't even remember that! I'm going to have to dig it out of the loft. :) Any other good book recommendations? I've been enjoying my long, quiet evenings with my book this last week.

Have you read the sequel to Rebecca? Another strange one Grin.

bubbleymummy · 04/05/2011 18:21

I haven't read Rebecca yet! So there's one! :)

I didn't even know there was a sequal written. I don't think I'll bother, sequals written by other people always end up reading like fanfic. I've gone from GWTW to something completely different and picked up a Jasper Fford form the library.

Yes, she did..

The "sequel" was utter pants. This is what happened.....

Rhett walked round the block, blew off some steam with Belle Watling, sent Ashley off on a round the world trip to last his lifetime and went home to kiss and make up with Scarlett.

Yes, zukie. I wondered about the children too. I've obviously managed to pretty much forget the sequel but now I want to remember just how bad it was! :)

So how do we think they end up back together ladies?

bubbleymummy · 04/05/2011 18:30

lol Katie - that's the short and sweet version of it! :)

If she wanted to write a sequel, she had plenty of time

I hated Rebecca because Max de Winter's a twunt.

Also, no one in her books has children. Were they all childfree like the author?

Pancakeflipper · 04/05/2011 18:38

I always like to think Scarlett amended her spoilt rotten ways and Rhett gradually over time came to love her again.

Or at the very least Scarlett became a 'better' person and although Rhett wouldn't touch her with a barge pole anymore - she somehow accepted it and kept her head held high.

I could not no bring myself to read the sequel thingy.

I loved that book - not read it for years. We had to read the book and watch the film for A'level. I was excused from a 3hr session of watching the film, sat on uncomfy chairs in a smelly dark room at college. Cos the tutor had no doubt that when I said I had read the book several times and seen the film too many times on rainy Sunday afternoons - that I really wasn't lying.

KatieScarlett2833 · 04/05/2011 18:38

Sigh, Ella married Melly's Beau Wilkes, Wade said so in the first book dontcha know?

She was beautiful in it...actually too beautiful given that Melanie was supposed to be quite plain! I loved her in the part though.

This book was responsible for my degree choice (read at 13;sparked an interest in US history, subsequently took US Studies at Uni).

I love the film too. BUT it is jawdroppingly racist. And is so incredibly partisan/nostalgic - the Ol' South shoulda won, d'ya hear? And no one mistreated their slaves at all....

MardyBra · 04/05/2011 18:57

I'm with PancakeFlipper - I was left hoping they'd eventually make it back together. If it was a "happy happy" ending it wouldn't be such an interesting book/film. A bit like Brief Encounter would be shite if they just left their spouses and ran off together.

The sequel was the biggest pile of tosh I've ever read.
