For Obama and effectively the rest of the US Govt to watch live coverage of Bin Laden being shot dead?

At least Hilary Clinton looked pretty horrified here

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 05/05/2011 13:47

so how exactly do you see that as having played out, xenia, in the actual real world? what should obama have done, having located the compound, to protect osama's right to a fair trial?

ZephirineDrouhin · 05/05/2011 14:37

Aside from the rather crude anti-Americanism, I absolutely agree with Xenia on this.

(never thought I would find myself typing those words)

AitchTwoOh · 05/05/2011 14:38

great! perhaps you could explain how it would actually have worked in the real world, zeph?

VajazzHands · 05/05/2011 15:01

Can you guys agree that while its never very nice to have to kill someone that any other way of bringing in Binladen probably would have resulted in the deaths of more people? And in that case would it have been worth it?

expatinscotland · 05/05/2011 15:04

On MN? I've hardly seen anyone agree about anything, Vajazz. You could post 'The colour blue is blue' and someone will argue with you that it's not at all, it's yellow and green. Or 'Day is day' and someone will tell you that's just your perception, the sun doesn't give a toss, you're being offensive to the sun, etc.

People like Xenia are all in favour of protecting the rights of Bin Laden, but a fig for the rights of the disabled in our own country, feckless bunch of scroungers that they are.

SueSylvesterforPM · 05/05/2011 15:21

its like when people saw Sadamm Husseing being hung, I don't think I could watch the fianl brutal seconds of someones life.

Ginabraz · 05/05/2011 15:32

I bet Bin Laden watched all those in the Twin Towers die.

I personally don't want to watch someone be killed, but I can understand why those in power would need to see it as proof.

dizzyde · 05/05/2011 15:50

That evil man deserved what he got! He killed thousands and thousands of people, we all saw peopple jumping from the twin towers. How horrific was that! And it was all down to this man. He is discusting. Personally, I think he deserved to be tortured 1st rather than getting away with a bullet to the head, instant death!

He was evil, I cant believe some people are saying he shouldnt have been killed! Madness!

ChateauRouge · 05/05/2011 15:54

Hecate had it right when she said that the people who ordered this should be made to watch it.

Killing him is wrong. Taking a life is murder, making you as bad as he was. It does not matter what he did- no-one has the right to end a life. This is what we have International Courts of Justice for.

dizzyde I hope to fuck you are not a regular mner, because your attitude stinks.

dizzyde · 05/05/2011 16:01

Ha ha!
I used to come on mums net a lot 6 yrs ago when my daughter was born.
Its people like you that make me laugh.
He is a murderer, a killer an evil evil evil man. He got off bloody lightly. And that is why thousands of people are now celebrating! I hold my glass up and say cheers to them!!

ChateauRouge · 05/05/2011 16:07

Where've you been hanging out recently then?
sweepinggeneralisations.net or StringEmAllUp.com?

[po face]

CheerfulYank · 05/05/2011 16:11

I will catch up on the rest of this thread when I am not at work but may I please just hijack and say that

THE MAJORITY OF US CITIZENS DO NOT BELIEVE THAN DINOSAURS AND MAN LIVED AT THE SAME TIME!

I have been educated in tiny rural schools my entire life and was never, ever taught this. I'm not sure where this assumption came from, but it is not true. I have only met one person who thought this, and she had been home schooled by crazy people.

Xenia , for about the third or fourth time, how would you have handled this particular situation?

dizzyde · 05/05/2011 16:12

You what?? Your lingo is rather odd. No actually, I have a life, dont have time to sit on the computer all day :-) Oh and was fighting cancer for 4 years of it. I just had another baby, so I thought id join, have a look now and again. Is that ok? lol

Anyway, im off to have a glass of wine to celebrate bin ladens death before i start dinner! :-)

Ginabraz · 05/05/2011 16:40

I like Dizzyde!

Good for you I say! Enjoy that wine

Tyr · 05/05/2011 16:48

If I understand correctly, OBL was in failing health. It also seems that he had become relatively obscure until this plastered his name all over the news afresh.
Surely, it would have made more sense, strategically, to led him die in obscurity, rather than martyrdom?
I can understand the symbolic act of revenge but, in terms of the stated goal of ridding the world of terrorism, this will just fan the flames.

carminaburana · 05/05/2011 16:49

Dizzyde; hope everything is ok re; your health, and congratulations on the new baby.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 05/05/2011 18:09

I suspect that ChateauRouge is using the thread to promote a couple of websites they've founded, dizzyde.

Many congratulations on your new DC, and sincere best wishes for your full recovery.

Enjoy your celebration, and I hope you'll drop in again soon.

CheerfulYank · 05/05/2011 18:33

Actually, I don't really believe in the death penalty, and I do think that innocent until proven guilty is an important part of any civilized society.

But.

I'm also a big believer in shades of gray. If a gunman broke into the school where I work (or any building filled with innocent people, really) and held the children and my co-workers hostage, I would sincerely hope that the police would not risk everyone's life by attempting to capture him.

I would never want to harm anyone, but if someone broke into my house and attempted to hurt my family (which does happen, here , I would absolutely kill them if I had to. No question.

For those who say this was the wrong choice, what would you have done ? That question has yet to be answered.

bigbuttons · 05/05/2011 18:40

Obama is a dickhead

CheerfulYank · 05/05/2011 18:46

Astute reasoning, bigbuttons ... Hmm

mercibucket · 05/05/2011 18:47

ah well it's great to have a photo of people watching a man get shot rather than a photo of the man himself being shot. I'm quite happy to accept that as proof of death, myself.

dizzyde · 05/05/2011 20:40

Hello!
My wine was lovely thank you! Good riddens to scum! :-)
Thank you everyone, Im 100% well and my baby boy is fantastic :-) Il put a piccy on soon.

will speak to you all soon, hopefully to make you smile! lol xx

floweryblue · 05/05/2011 20:47

I agree with what Tyr said, sort of.

I think it is the press hyping this up, with the help of the US government, which is the most unpleasant aspect of the whole situation.

As others have said, the celebrations by very young people in the US are not necessarily representative of the US population at large.

Many, many people across the world may well feel that justice has been done but equally as many will feel that justice has been cheated of a proper trial. And a significant number of people may believe Osama Bin Laden was leading a justifiable war.

I have no idea how the situation on the ground could have been handled differently but the gleeful media hysterics is just awful. No death should be celebrated by civilised human beings, however much we may disapprove of the beliefs and actions of the deceased.

Cloudydays · 05/05/2011 20:54

mercibucket the question of whether to release the photo is a total no-win situation for the President.

Don't release it, and the conspiracy theorists wet themselves with glee at the 'proof' that it didn't really happen.

Release it, and people like OP and others, who have managed to be offended by a picture of other people looking at the images, will see the release of the photo as akin to mounting the head on a spike outside the White House.

Still waiting for Xenia to tell us what she would have done.
