AIBU to think where I actually put this rug is up to me?

My sil has been in possession of an antique rug for quite some time, she has recently renovated her house and finds she can't accommodate it any more. It was left to her by her husband's family, it is very nice and she has offered it (with her husband's full consent) to my husband (which is nice of her) and myself to make use of. We have decided to put it in one of the guest bedrooms as it would like there the nicest. My mil has had a strop about this; saying that we really should put it in the living room as she does not like the carpet we have there.
AIBU to tell her -in a nice way- to mind her own business?

Tell her you've changed your mind and are going to put it in the toilet Grin

ENormaSnob · 03/05/2011 13:07

Tell her to keep her fucking beak out.

jeckadeck · 03/05/2011 13:07

YANBU, she sounds like a neurotic and controlling old trout. Makes me wonder what else she has stuck her beak into. Tell her sweetly to stick it where the sun don't shine.

MamaLazarou · 03/05/2011 13:08

YANBU and she is being a silly cow

My dh fundamentally agrees with me that where we put it is up to us, but says we shouldn't have told her NOW- said we should have just waited for her next visit. But why wait? She'll find out sooner or later. She is very controlling and this is latest in long line of stuff like this.

I am liking the toilet idea, or it could make a rather fetching lining for the dog basket, no?

Yes tell her to mind her own business! My MIL is just the same. We just decorated our nursery with stickers the other day and my DP - for some unknown reason - asked his mum to come and help us put them up. As a result not one of the stickers is where I wanted them, she just took over. She also likes to clean our house when I'm out and she's here with DP, I come home to find all my ornaments in the wrong places. Sometimes even in different rooms! She does the washing up and puts everything away in the wrong places so I can never find anything. She once put a large jar of homemade pickled red cabbage in the biscuit cupboard Confused

It's like fighting a constant tide of interference from her. A constant battle.

Yes, she is being unreasonable not me. Thanks for the confirmation! Smile

Melly19MummyToBe I couldn't cope with that, I would have to slap her!!! Grin

Oh I wanted to a few weeks ago trust me, I've really been struggling with a bad shoulder and housework is just piling up, I can't do much because after a few minutes of using my right arm my shoulders killing me. So MIL offered to clean the house for me one day, and I agreed, not because I wanted her to, but because the house was in desperate need of a good clean. Anyway, I sat there for about 5 hours while she moved all our stuff around and put things in the wrong places. She almost killed us aswell, we have this metal rack thing which is sat on the floor above a gas pipe, so we can't put heavy things in it otherwise it will rest on the pipe, so she put a massive bag of potatoes right on top of the gas pipe. Thankfully I noticed a few minutes after she'd done it and no damage had been done. DP nearly fainted when I told him that. He's very over-protective of me and the bump bless him :o
