Sil- what should I address my mum as to her?

Another thread got me thinking. My Sil lost her mum about 4 yrs ago.
I sent her a text yesterday re plans for the weekend. I sent it to her phone as my bro is rubbish at responding. I said " see you at mums" meaning my mum - her mil. Should I have said that? How would you address yr own mum as in this situation? It occured to me today that she may not like it after reading a post on here. I don't want to hurt her feelings or be inconsiderate

i don't have a SIL on my side but i would say to my brother gf 'see you at my mum's' and i would expect my SIL on my husband's side to say the same 'my mum's' rather than just 'mums' - but it wouldn't bother me if my SIL said 'mums' meaning her mum's. it's just a turn of phrase and imo varies from family to family and in different parts of the country.

I think you're overthinking it to be honest. I'm sure she didn't bat an eyelid. Nice of you to think of her though :)

i think it is fine, she knows what you mean and i doubt any one reasonable would take offence,

i refer to my mil to my dh as mum

kitten84 · 25/04/2011 21:31

That would be fine.

Sounds fine to me. No-one ever replaces your own mum but it may have made her smile in a way of you feel you can share yours with her iyswim? I know its just a turn of phrase but you are including her.

Thanks all. Glad to know you would be ok with it
