To think those epilator thingies are probably a bit rubbish??

.. having not actually tried one? Am now contemplating my pale and interesting (ahem) legs and thinking some heavy-duty hair removal is in order! I have seen the ads for those Epilator hair removal thingies and part of me thinks ooh that would be good, no more messing with a razor or horrible hair removal cream... but surely if the were any good we would all have one?? I have seen one for £50 in Tesco but still seems alot - unless they are good!

Has anyone used/got one and do you like it / does it work / is it (very) painful??

Thanks ladies :)

Ally

Sarah.... I love it too.... I'm always a little disappointed when i run out of hair to do Blush

Although I tried my bikini line once and it was torture... no endorphins came to my rescue and there was blood Shock

PhishFoodAddiction · 25/04/2011 19:08

Funny you should mention this, as I got my epilator out today for the first time since last year and it hurt like hell! Managed probably a 3cmX3cm square on one leg and gave it up as a bad job!

Not a chance in hell I'm trying it on my bikini line as I'd probably pass out! Maybe I'm just a wuss though...

I'm sticking with the trusty razor from now on.

Same here Summer, I can do my bikini line but my underarms bled [buconfused]

fastedwina · 25/04/2011 19:44

never tried it but is the pain worse then waxing?

YusMilady · 25/04/2011 19:48

It's a different kind of pain from waxing IME - I lurve my epilator and have done legs & armpits with it for yearss now - it's easy, quick and satisfying and yes the endorphins are fab - like picking a particularly exquisite scab (repellent simile, but you get the idea).

MadameCastafiore · 25/04/2011 19:52

You get used to the pain and after a few times it actually deosn't hurt at all as the hair is weakened and then when it grows it is soft and doesn't feel like a blokes beard!

needtogetalife · 25/04/2011 19:53

when I used mine I never once had smooth legs! there was always short hairs growing that where too short to epilate but could still be felt. I stopped using it wondering if I was doing something wrong.

SisterCarrie · 25/04/2011 20:07

Best money I ever spent. I had my legs waxed about a month ago and I use the epilator to deal with the hairs that grow back. Use on bikini line if I am deaperate (rather have that waxed, but if we decide to go for a swim at the last minute, then it's bearable - just).

Never tried on armpits as had them waxed once and it was a nightmare of ingrown hairs.

Probably saved hundreds of £ over the last 5 years - the pain lessens over time.

Mine came with an icepack which helped the first few times. I also exfoliate religiously as the hairs are so fine now they invariably get ingrown.

thenightsky · 25/04/2011 20:30

Legs I can do with no pain at all, just a slight tingle.

Underarms... first swipe is a bit eeek, but then I'm too busy concentrating on getting every last hair by peering in 10x mirror.

Bikini line... tried many times but I've come to the conclusion that its a no-go area for epilators. I nearly fainted with pain. But then I've never waxed that bit either.

springbokdoc · 25/04/2011 20:45

Jeez you guys are braver than me. I found it excruciatingly painful on my legs and would never ever dare due it to my underarms/bikini line! But am liking the idea of having a wax and then dealing with the regrowth with it, that might be a tad less painful.

Ally If that doesn't work and I still find it too painful you can have mine for a tenner Grin

NellieForbush · 25/04/2011 20:50

bibbitybobbityhat is absolutely right - follow this procedure.

Precede each epilating session with a glass of wine - it takes the edge off.

Some areas really hurt - ankles bring tears to my eyes - but you do get used to it.

LoveLeonardCohen · 25/04/2011 21:02

I'm afraid i brought one of these - a Remington and whilst at the beginning I was all like, 'ohh that's amazing'...I had to keep on epilating almost everyday, my hair growth got all uneven and had terrible ingrowing hairs. MY legs got messed up and have gone back to shaving
