to wonder about obesity

Please, please, PLEASE don't think that this is a fat-bashing thread, I hate it when people do that and I'd never ever do it myself.

The thing is, I love food, I do like nice food and I do overeat on occasions. My BMI is 'overweight' - I could do with shifting a stone - I'm most definitely not a size 8 smuggie person.

What I'm wondering about isn't even people a fair bit bigger than me. But really, really large people (I'm thinking around the 20 stone + region) Isn't it quite, well, difficult in a way to maintain and gain weight at that size, as you really would have to be eating an awful lot (unless a medical reason, I realise things like PCOS can contribute.)

I suppose I was wondering as my friend has a friend who is only 21 and weighs 18 and a half stone - to be honest I think she is in denial a little bit as she says things like "Oh I know I don't look this big" when to be honest she does - I understand that - but given that at that size it is fairly easy to make small changes and still lose weight, I guess I just wonder why people don't. That did sound quite bitchy and judgemental and I'm honestly trying hard to avoid that.

I can totally see how people get big, I've "been there" myself but I guess what I mean was when the scales hit 13 stone I thought "f*ck!" and went on a diet - surely if the scales hit 20 stone you would ...?

I probably deserve a flaming - can I just say mega apologies if I DO offend you as I honestly don't want to do that!

Fabby- did I get this right? You eat about 300 calories per day?

FudgeGirl · 23/04/2011 23:53

Amazed that it could be believed that a creme egg has 500 calories! 173 to be precise :)

worraliberty · 23/04/2011 23:54

Do we have to be so insulting to thinner people by calling them 'skinny minnies'? Grin

I'm sure this thread would take a quick downward turn if we began using the phrase 'fatty batties' Grin

nikki - its hot so i eat salad. when its cold i will have pie and mash or beef stew or chicken and spuds.

I don't eat chips that often, every meal has veg. I don't fry very often. Cook most things from scratch.

but i dont calorie count, if i fancy a cream cake i will have a cream cake. one not 6.

I don't over eat. but i don't eat what would be considered a dieters diet. if i make mash then i put butter and milk (semi skimmed) in it. I will use cheese or butter in recipes etc etc.

I didnt go to sleep a size 10 and wake up a 24. it has taken 15 yeasrs of maybe a stone a year. it goes on slow and steady.

maisy - thanks

'Food is my friend, my comforter, my crutch, my boredom breaker and my emotional bandage'

Lewis, I could have written that word for word.

I eat to cheer myself up when I'm sad and to reward myself when I'm happy. I've done it ever since I can remember.

Having said that, until 9/10 years ago I was able to keep around a size 12-14 (and I did have a bloody brilliant figure, proper in and out curves, tiny waist) because I would only have 1 treat if I was happy, one chocolate bar to pick me up when I was sad. I then met my Ex-p, ended up in a dysfunctional and abusive relationship, and the longer it went on the more food not only comforted me but insulated me from both the pain of the situation, and protected me from him (because the fatter I got, the less he wanted me)

Ds2 was 10 last week. Before I got pregnant with him, I was no more than 11 stone. I put some weight on during pregnancy, but only about a stone. I weighed myself about 6 years ago and weighed 15 stone. So had put on 3-4 stone in 4 years :(

I knew I was overeating still, but wasn't conscious of having got much fatter, and didnt weigh myself again. However this year when I joined SW, I weighed over 18 stone. I thought I was 16 stone at most. I have lost 2.5 stone now, but still a long way to go. And relationship with food is still not 100%, far from it.

I use skinny minnie as a complement :)

It is so so easy to rack up extra calories. I now realise how I managed to put so much weight on over the last few years. A slice of toast with butter here, a can of coke there..... even fruit juice is loaded with sugar.

hmc · 23/04/2011 23:57

I will concede that the 'denial' isn't too bad. Am enjoying the healthy food I eat these days - would just like to be able to stop monitoring and measuring and thinking about it sometimes....

Deuce · 23/04/2011 23:57

Oh ffs, eat less exercise more.

It really is not rocket science now is it?

I will await to be bashed by everyone who is over weight and denying it

Get with the programme, I couldn't give a shit if you are fat, I am healthy cos I take exercise. Sorry now!!!

Serenitysutton · 23/04/2011 23:58

There isn't much point listing what you eat in a day-you need to look at it over weeks, a month. As nicki said noone gets to 20 stone on 2000 calories per day. They might have days where they have 1000 and days where they have 3000- as we all do. I suspect v overweight people have many days where they have very high numbers if calories, but dismiss them by just remembering the days they ate a tuna salad and chicken and broccali.

crashingwaves · 23/04/2011 23:59

To be fair though Deuce, I can totally see how with small children it's hard to exercise.

I would have known that though, I mean a cappuccino has milk in it and cheese - two very obviously high fat things - and a flapjack as well lol

OP posts:
Deuce · 24/04/2011 00:01

With small children it is easier to exercise more. All that checking and running around. It doesn't have to be organised exercise, just movement.

hmc · 24/04/2011 00:01

I exercise a lot now and am no longer overweight Deuce - nevertheless I don't feel entitled to be an intolerant and offensive cunt to those who still struggle with their weight

[shrugs - knows this post will be deleted soon, but thought that Deuce needed telling!]

thank the lord that deuce has arrived with sucxh a groundbreaking discovery.

eat less excercise more? why the fuck didn't us fatties realise that before?

squeakytoy · 24/04/2011 00:03

Deuce, I almost agree. I wouldnt say eat less though, I would say eat healthier. No pastry, no white bread, less pasta, no sugars. Eat early, not late, and drink lots of water.

I have lost a stone now, and it has been hard work, but the best part was going into Next yesterday and picking a size 14 off the rail, trying it on, and it fit perfectly. A month ago, I was wearing a 16/18.

I have been exercising every day, and exercising hard too for at least two half hour sessions, as well as walking everywhere if I could, and by cutting out as many bad carbs, fat and sugar (including alcohol) out. It is the first time I have really put my mind to it and kept at it, without giving up after a few days, and I honestly do feel so much healthier already.

MaisyMooCow · 24/04/2011 00:03

The tables seem to be turning when it comes to being weight conscious.

In my office more men now discuss their weight than the women do. I hardly ever hear the girls chatting about diets anymore, it's always the guys going on about how they're trying to lose weight and going on about hammering the gym. A couple of the guys are so obsessed that every time they see me eating they feel inclined to tell me how may calories are in it.

Deuce · 24/04/2011 00:03

Wow hmc you are soooo cool pmsl

mamaz0n · 24/04/2011 00:04

wheras you're just a twat

hmc · 24/04/2011 00:04

Good grief - how old are you?

worraliberty · 24/04/2011 00:05

It's not that hard to exercise with small children really. The Wii fit is great and kids do eventually sleep.

Mind you, I hate exercise with a passion and will do my utmost to get out of it Grin

Running around the park with the kids is a great way to burn it off though. Toddlers are off in a shot and love being out of the buggy in the middle of a field...just chasing them and constantly bringing them back for an hour or two would put most athletes to shame Grin

hmc · 24/04/2011 00:05

(not you mamazon)
