... if it's supposed to represent St George's Day? Dragons are Welsh, surely?

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 23/04/2011 15:15

i said that when they werte discussing a st georges day symbol!!

clearly nobody listened!!

GypsyMoth · 23/04/2011 15:15

and its a silly looking dragon as well...i dont like it!!

belgo · 23/04/2011 15:16

St George is supposed to have killed the Dragon I think; I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

But I agree with you, red dragons are strongly associated with Wales and I think they should have had it.

A rose would have been lovely, not sure why it was vetoed.

But red roses are for Feb 14th.

I dunno whether you saw the thread requesting the dragon, but the Tech guy was really struggling to find a non-red one, and the rose was rejected due to a lack of agreement about Lancs/Yorks/Northants rose, I think.

You say dragons "are" Welsh, but St George IS supposed to have slain one.

nickelbaalamb · 23/04/2011 15:20

no, St George killed a Dragon, that's why he's famous.

The Red Rose is only part of England (York Rose (white) versus Lanchashire rose (red)) so that wouldn't be allowed

belgo · 23/04/2011 15:20

I think we should have had a choice of roses.

Magna · 23/04/2011 15:20

Poor MNHQ damned if they do damned if they don't [buwink]

I personally like it Dragon

GypsyMoth · 23/04/2011 15:21

why not a little english flag then?

the dragon we have been given is NOT cute and i refuse to use it!! so there!!

GypsyMoth · 23/04/2011 15:21

it looks limp!!

moondog · 23/04/2011 15:22

A little flag better.
Dragon not right for English.
Wondered why it was there tbh. Only now does it make sense.

nickelbaalamb · 23/04/2011 15:23

but the dragon St George killed wouldn't have been cute either!! that was why it had to be killed!

VinegarTits · 23/04/2011 15:23

GypsyMoth · 23/04/2011 15:24

The red rose is all of England. It's the Tudor Rose. It's also the Lancaster rose. Because we won. Ner.

VinegarTits · 23/04/2011 15:29

every historical reference relating to St George ive ever seen, shows him slaying a dragon, you may not like it but thats history, or maybe we should completely change history and show him holding a ickle red rose, just for you

JaneS · 23/04/2011 15:31

Of course St George's symbol is a dragon! Tut tut, does no-one study iconography any more?

The dragons of England and Wales are symbolically locked in battle, it's one of Merlin's prophecies that the two would fight forever.

nenevomito · 23/04/2011 15:31

My DS has a passion for DragonDragon.

I like it.

NorbertDentressangle · 23/04/2011 15:32

I read that as a Red Nose [bublush]

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 23/04/2011 15:32

VinegarTits, by that logic St. Patrick's day should have had a snake for a symbol!

The dragon is a Welsh symbol. It's on their bloody flag!

cory · 23/04/2011 15:33

Better a Welsh dragon than a Cappadocian saint, surely?
