...at a lovely seaside park in Hove. Very, very popular and busy playpark right next to the beach which attracts all sorts of families.

The cafe in the park is a vegan, organic place. Apparently it belongs to Heather Mills but I don't know if that is true.

Anyway...non-dairy ice-cream for the kids (don't know what they make it with but it's faaaaar too sweet) and tea for me with soya milk. I don't really want soya milk in my tea but there's no alternative, being as it's a vegan cafe.

I'm all for making provision for people with allergies and ethics and so on but....AIBU to find a vegan cafe in such a very popular location a tad...restrictive? Or bossy?

"Why can't non meat establishments have a provision for non vegans/veggies? It is totally expected that there be an option in reverse?!"

Have you ever tried finding a vegan snack in a park cafe? My daughter has egg and dairy alergies and it is extrememly rare for me to find anything that she is able to eat when we are out and about apart from salted crisps. (Big Yay to Le Pain Quotidian. They may be expensive but they do sell a vegan muffin so my daughter can actually feel normal. Luckily she likes blueberry muffins. Ironically, vegans and the allergic can't afford to be picky.)

If I can remember to bake and take a homemade cake for every outing and party my daughter attends I don't think it's unreasonable for you to take your own milk/flask when you go to that park.

EricNorthmansMistress · 21/04/2011 14:11

It's all a bit 'what about the menzzzzz' isn't it?! It's completely normal and commonplace to be able to find carnivorous food wherever you go. It's not so easy to find vegetarian, and vegan even rarer. So someone who is ideologically opposed to consuming animal products opens a business selling non animal derived food and drink and people complain that they can't get a hamburger! Sheesh!

ddubsgirl · 21/04/2011 14:29

didnt mean peter pans in worthing, was on about the one in brighton,10 min walk from where i am,near the marina

ddubsgirl · 21/04/2011 14:32

mickey mouse town, havent heard that in awhile lol!my parents are buried up in the cemetry there, been ages since ive been up there, must get over soon :(

Yukana · 21/04/2011 16:21

YABU. As a non-vegan you have plenty of places to go out to.

I was vegan for four years before recently becoming pregnant, so I know how hard it is to go out for a meal or anything anywhere. Vegetarian things in some places maybe, but a lot of places aren't vegan.

Plus, like you have mentioned, perhaps children and adults allergic to certain products want to go to these 'very popular' places too.

NorfolkNChanceOfAnEgg · 21/04/2011 16:50

LOL @ Delusions of grandeur!

I suffered lived in Durrington for 16 years (although 'twas the non dodgy part)

You and I will have to sit on Goring beach scoffing hunks of dead animal with gay abandon!

AvengingAngel · 21/04/2011 18:23

Yukana, why did you stop being vegan because you became pregnant???

EricNorthmansMistress · 21/04/2011 18:27

I did too Angel - I just craved yoghurt and cheese :)

GabbyLoggon · 21/04/2011 18:33

yes , I insist on proper milk. You are entitled to UHT ruins tea and coffee for me. Almost verse

AvengingAngel · 21/04/2011 18:34

Are you back to being vegan now? I think I may have craved a fried egg sandwich at the 16w mark tbh!

AvengingAngel · 21/04/2011 18:35

I'm vegan by the way ENM!

GabbyLoggon · 21/04/2011 18:36

No I am not pregnant; nor is my wife. The cat next door? was pregnant

Yukana · 21/04/2011 18:43

Avenging -
I stopped being vegan because I felt I needed the extra vitamins and such, I'm vegetarian now temporarily until the baby is born. In my eyes, my baby comes first and I want to make sure I look after her even if she isn't born yet. :)

Shoesytwoesy · 21/04/2011 18:45

yabu
everyone knows it is a vegan cafe, so just take a flask next time and don't go into the cafe

AvengingAngel · 21/04/2011 18:51

Yukana - totally agree, I always said and maintain my baby's health comes before my ethics - however - you really can get all the vitamins you need from a vegan diet. As you may know, a vast body of research suggests it is healthier for you to consume a plant based diet. It's all just marketing from the meat and dairy industry if you believe otherwise. Hey ho - everyone has to make their own choices! Anyway, I have a healthy bouncing baby boy, who I breastfeed and he is thriving after a vegan pregnancy. Anyway - good luck in your preg!

GrimmaTheNome · 21/04/2011 19:02

I have a solution! Vegan cafes should do Turkish tea - mild black tea which to my astonishment was very nice without milk when I accidentally ordered some last week.

Olifin · 21/04/2011 22:48

'Accidentally ordered some' Ha ha ha! Perhaps I will try some Turkish tea next time :)

Norfolk I live in the non-dodgy part, honestly I do. Tis nice at this end. Where are you now? (ish)

pinksmarties · 21/04/2011 23:01

Gloriasmut, that made me laugh out loud Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 21/04/2011 23:05

Well, I was in Turkey and just asked for 'tea' without thinking. Much nicer result than when I did the same thing in the southern US and was given iced tea by default, bleurgh.

ohmyfucksy · 21/04/2011 23:07

Set up a rival non-vegan cafe

The vegan one will go bust in 6 months

it most definitely is Heather Mills vegan cafe, she lives just along the road, well seafront actually near to FatBoySlim & Zoe Ball's house, have'nt been to the cafe myself but then I don't wish to give my hard earned pennies to Ms.Mills.

RedbinD · 21/04/2011 23:27

start drinking black tea and get used to it. It's a much nicer drink, especially with lemon.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 22/04/2011 00:20

OP - do you like any herbal teas? I find most of them a bit sour and thin-tasting, but love Yogi Tea Licorice with Egyptian spice tea - the licorice is sweet licorice, and it has a lovely sweet, round taste.

If you have a few herbal teabags in your pocket/handbag, you need only ask for hot water (which should be free) to make a lovely cuppa.

SpeedyGonzalez · 22/04/2011 00:48

They do fabulous cakes at that cafe. And there's a wide range of milks you could have tried.

Nobody ever died from having a cup of tea without cow's milk. It's a vegan cafe. What did you expect?
