To think the "No to AV" campaign is a bit naughty?

Make your own decision about what you believe, but please take the chance to understand the facts:

Why shouldn't the no people have their say? Nothing naughty at all.

Mauvemay · 19/04/2011 21:50

It is if they tell untruths. Which they have.

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 19/04/2011 21:55

Why are you assuming that the rather childish scribblings on that site are the truth?

reelingintheyears · 19/04/2011 21:57

I shall vote no.

DP will vote yes.

Each to their own op.

HalleluiaScot · 19/04/2011 22:02

Av is stupid, though.

Mauvemay · 19/04/2011 22:04

...because I read both versions and decided which one made more sense?

Probably a novel approach in a country where most people vote without thinking about it, just because their parents voted the same way.

Just like people will vote "no" because they don't like Clegg, or "yes" because they don't like Cameron.

Just like HS replied to this post without reading the link, and just like KK based their reply on the quality of the writing (rather than the quality of the content)

You know....not bothering to think about it and making decisions for the wrong reasons.

Bellie · 19/04/2011 22:05

But because you have decided that your decision is the right one, you have decided that everyone else HAS to agree with you.
They are not being naughty they are giving their point of view and they are playing the politics game to make their point!

HalleluiaScot · 19/04/2011 22:06

And even more stupid to go by the say so of someone on an Internet forum.

Mauvemay · 19/04/2011 22:07

RITY - agreed! As long as you know why you're voting that way (and understand the issues) then great!

But then you get insightful comments like HS's "AV is stupid". Lovely addition to the debate.

OP posts:
ant3nna · 19/04/2011 22:09

Well I did my masters project on the pros and cons of various voting systems so I'm fairly confident that I understand the issues around av and fptp. I'm going to vote no.

HalleluiaScot · 19/04/2011 22:10

But it is stupid, and I do have a well-researched viewpoint. I am not just a sheep following a minority view.

KurriKurri · 19/04/2011 22:12

What an incredibly arrogant post - you don't know anything about me OP or why I vote in the way I do, where do you get your statistics about 'most people voting the way their parents did' or people 'voting no because they don't like Clegg' ? Clegg doesn't want AV, he wants PR, but he's got to take what he's offered because he won't get anything else.

I didn't base my reply on the quality of the writing, I called it childish scribblings because the arguments were so poor.

K999 · 19/04/2011 22:13

HS why do you think it's stupid

reelingintheyears · 19/04/2011 22:17

Funnily enough it's the first time DP and i will have voted differently in 25 years together....

We will get over it...Smile

Birdsgottafly · 19/04/2011 22:19

How would one person, one vote be that much better, when certain areas have such a low turn out? No voting system is going to reflect how the majority think, but are to lazy to do anything about it. I do accept that there is an apathy and perhaps changing the voting system will stir people into voting. BTW i agree with one person, one vote.

Birdsgottafly · 19/04/2011 22:21

Why is anyone surprised by the website possibly not telling the truth-they are discussing politics.

K999 · 19/04/2011 22:22

I think STV is a better option.

Mauvemay · 19/04/2011 22:27

KK - I made no guesses about the way you might vote, nor have you given your opinion on that point. My comment was in relation to your post:

"Why are you assuming that the rather childish scribblings on that site are the truth?"

To base your opinion on whether something is written neatly or not would be foolhardy. I'm not even saying you did that, but you must see how your post comes across.

I said it at the start and I'll say it again - I'm not telling anyone to vote any way - just pleading that those who do vote, understand why.

You might do so already. Great! I prostrate myself for patronising you.

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 19/04/2011 22:33

No need for prostration Mauvemay Grin- apologies for my previous post it was rather rude, - I wouldn't want to fall out with someone over politics - I'm happy to agree to differ.

gordyslovesheep · 19/04/2011 23:02

I am voting NO and I am well informed - I do not like AV I think it is massively flawed - PR I would vote for but not this

melpomene · 19/04/2011 23:15

The 'yes' campaign are making a load of incorrect claims:

"your vote will really count"/"no vote wasted" - if you preferred candidate comes third or fourth, your vote still may not count for anything while the people who vote for the candidates in fifth and sixth place have their second choices counted

"the end of tactical voting" - no it isn't. where there is a close race tactical voting could still be needed. It would just become a lot more complicated. And you also have the bizarre situation where (for example) a minority party could be better off coming last, and having their 2nd choices counted, while the minority party that comes second-to-last don't get their 2nd choice counted.

HHLimbo · 20/04/2011 02:46

No2AV are stupid. They always use arguments like "Ive studied it for 24.7 years and Im voting no, therefore you should too"
or link something bad to AV even when there is no link whatsoever. like

"FPTP causes cancer - vote for AV."
"FPTP will make all your hair fall out - vote for change, for YES to AV."

Or they reverse things - they say the benefits of AV apply to FPTP when they dont.

eg, FPTP lets extreme parties in. BUT AV wont - because they need to get 50% - they have to be mainstream to get a majority of vote.
