DH and I were shocked - you couldn't get anything remotely healthy (that went for most of the restaurants too) no wonder the US has such an obestiy problem if even huge commercial ventures serve bloody burgers, fries, fried chicken, chicken ceaser (sad soggy lettuce drowned in full fat dressing), pizza and hot dogs, pop corn and corn dogs.

I have come back about 7lbs heavier and with a face full of spots and I triend to steer clear of the crap as much as I could.

I got excited about having steamed broccoli when I saw it on a menu to find that it had been steamed and then flash fried with some ultra salty dressing - incredible!

squeakytoy · 19/04/2011 17:41

I cannot agree at all with the Op. No idea where you were looking, but we have been to the USA, and the theme parks a few times, and the quality/choice of food in the USA is far better than the UK. If you go to a burger bar then yes, you get a burger, but there is much more to pick than that if you look.

Also, the americans are much more accomodating with service than the brits. If you ask for something to be dressing free, no cheese, etc, then they dont pull a sulky face or point blank refuse either.

worraliberty · 19/04/2011 17:43

It isn;t so much the weight either the way you feel after a week of not being able to eat normal healthy food is sooo crappy!

To be fair, if you managed to gain half a stone in one week, it could have been a lot to do with portion size.

One week of crappy eating moderate portions shouldn't gain you 7lbs surely?

BiscuitNibbler · 19/04/2011 17:49

YABU.

I think you just didn't look for the right food TBH. Yes, it is very easy to just eat junk food in the parks, but that is a choice rather than a compulsion.

There are plenty of healthy options available, and virtually every food kiosk / restaurant serves fruit as a dessert option.

We went in January and I lost 7lbs with all the walking we did. We had the Quick Service Dining Plan and so ate exclusively at Disney, and I assure you we had fresh fruit and veg every day.

bethelbeth · 19/04/2011 18:53

Tokyo Disneyland serves mostly healthy options. Go there if you want to eat healthily

Kimberjem · 19/04/2011 18:56

A colleague of mine went on a cruise that was largely with American holidaymakers, a couple at dinner told him that they bought two of everything in bigger sizes so they could wear the same clothes at the end of the holiday with their weight gain!

squeakytoy · 19/04/2011 18:59

And did you believe him? Grin

ScarletOHaHa · 19/04/2011 19:00

Disneyland Paris had ok choices, even for kiddos. Salmon and green beans with Mickey Mouse and Cod will veggie broth. The other two nights kids wanted pizza Smile.

PanicOnTheStreetsOfLondon · 19/04/2011 19:11

YANBU - DH and I said exactly the same thing. I'd say that Universal was much much worse than Disney though.

Adult menus weren't so bad, but in every place we went to the kids menu consisted of hot dogs, cheeseburgers, cheese pizza and macaroni & cheese and occaisionally chicken nuggets.

The best places we went to where the all you can eat buffet ones, because at least you could offset the pancake mountain with a small cube of watermelon.

Agree with squeakytoy that the service, even in the crappiest of crappy burger bars is excpetional though.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/04/2011 19:23

You'd have to overeat by 3,500 calories in a week to gain 1lb.. so how did you manage to gain 7lb in that timeframe? Confused

QuickLookBusy · 19/04/2011 19:29

Oh don't be such a doubting thomas LyingWitch. This isn't a court of lawGrin

I've gained nearly 7lbs in a week-over xmas/new year time.

FolornHope · 19/04/2011 19:29

it was bad, all of florida i agree
i didnt eat that much

i di dlove all teh lobster though

QuickLookBusy · 19/04/2011 19:30

And she did mention constipation, so that would definitely add a pound or 3Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/04/2011 19:32

QuickLookBusy... Very possibly... I've come to the conclusion that it's quite easy really, only difficult to eat that many calories in rice cakes and other similar crap diet food. Grin

Our head office is in France and I feel terrible after spending a week there... vegetables are a 'garnish' and fruit is very scarce. I was eyeing up the table flowers and pinched everybody's mint leaves from their dessert... I was desperate. Blush

silverfrog · 19/04/2011 19:37

but but - if oyu can't find fruit and veg at Disney, the you are doign it wrong - honestly!

we were on a Dining PLan, and had far too much food - w ehad loads of snacks and quick service meals left at the end of our stay, having gorged ourselves on fresh fruit daily.

luckily, we found a very helpful assistant at a food court, and cashed them all in for fruit and drinks ot take with us (we had a further self-catering week in the US to go), and didn't have to buy fruit or water for the whole week... honestly, we were tripping over pineapple, fruit salads, grapes - everyhwere. and the buffets had loads of "nice" options as well as the fast food crap.

and even in the food courts there was usually a choice of wraps and salads as well as burgers and fries.

(and I am a food nazi, and was happy ot let my girls stuff themsleves, as knew the allergies had been taken care of, and that most things were cooked ot order for them - allergies means that they have ot eat mostly shit-free food anyway)

duckypoo · 19/04/2011 19:47

I loved the food in Florida, even the fast food Blush the buffet style restaurant we found was amazing, and you can't sniff at the lobster. We did have a minging chinese though bleurgh.

Although they were very keen on foisting macaroni cheese on our 2yo Confused, they were also very Shock when we asked for a knife and fork for her, god knows why.

You could have easily smuggled a packed lunch in, I only remember eating in the parks once tbh.

HeidiKat · 19/04/2011 19:48

I've heard that the disney "turkey legs" are actually ostrich, but that might just be an urban legend.

Kimberjem · 19/04/2011 19:58

Of course I did Squeaky, I believe any old sh*t! Ha ha. I did just get back from Florida though and forgot how little really fresh food there seems to be, I was very excited about all the fattening food for the first 3 days and then it quickly got boring.

OrganisedMayhem · 19/04/2011 20:13

When we have been to Florida we have always rented a villa with private pool about 30 minutes fom the parks (cheaper and easier than you think).... so never really had to eat lots of 'Disney' food.

We loved all the different things in the supermarket and the fantastic restaurants. However, if you just live off Orlando buffets, you will expand whilst you are there. The quantities are awesome.....

The only Disney buffet I have had was at Chef Mickey (with the characters) and the food was wholesome and yummy - could not fault it really! Plus the added bonus of Mickey and friends to entertain us.

Oh how I want to go again!!!!

pointydog · 19/04/2011 20:20

I was shocked by the shite served at Disneyland Paris because it's Paris, for crying out loud, and so shouldn't be allowed. Vive la greve.

I assumed Florida would have terrible food because that is the American Way, but someone told me it was good. Obviously lying then.

GoldenGreen · 19/04/2011 20:27

This reminds me of the time I felt like being healthy and ordered a chicken salad in the States - I expected dressing but it also had loads of cheese and a serving of french fries on top of it as well - I may as well have had a burger!

But generally speaking I find that you can get healthier options in Florida, even in the parks - not like Disneyland Paris, where the choices are truly dreadful.

pooka · 19/04/2011 20:32

Dh and I were talking about eurodisney (hell) and agreed that they'd make an absolute killing if they set up some fruit stalls/juice bars. We were staying in a hotel and thank god I took a bag of apples, a bunch of bananas and some grapes. I was fantasising about veg and some fruit salad.

pointydog · 19/04/2011 20:36

yup, I longed for fruit and veg too, pooka.

Spent a fortune on an eat-all-you-want buffet on the last night at our hotel. Boy it was worth it, just to pile the plates high with vegetables and salads and fruit salad.

LetThereBeRock · 19/04/2011 20:39

They sold fruit,at one or two stalls, when I was in Disneyland Paris last year. Not a huge selection admittedly, but there was some.

pooka · 19/04/2011 20:42

Agree that the us Disney parks had much better variety of food and .... Access to fruit andveg and healthier snacks during the day. We ate very well in Florida. Also new york (yummmm) and Boston fish/lobster amazing.

pooka · 19/04/2011 20:43

Oh we looked and looked for fruit bars the year before last - but no joy.
