To be shocked at the shite served as food in Disney???

DH and I were shocked - you couldn't get anything remotely healthy (that went for most of the restaurants too) no wonder the US has such an obestiy problem if even huge commercial ventures serve bloody burgers, fries, fried chicken, chicken ceaser (sad soggy lettuce drowned in full fat dressing), pizza and hot dogs, pop corn and corn dogs.

I have come back about 7lbs heavier and with a face full of spots and I triend to steer clear of the crap as much as I could.

I got excited about having steamed broccoli when I saw it on a menu to find that it had been steamed and then flash fried with some ultra salty dressing - incredible!

funny im planning disney next year(its dd dram wish granted) and i have been looking at menus to see food options and was suprisd and pleased at the choices

We went to Disney in Florida this time last year. We didn't stay on site though, so didn't find the food an issue. Yes, it was repetitive, and the fact that the "healthier" option was chicken caesar salad swimming in fatty dressing was laughable, but we ate more healthily in the evening. I went home 6lbs lighter from all the walking around in the heat.

We did two nights in NYC either side of the Florida bit and the food was fabulous - anyone who doesn't eat well in New York has missed the point rather...

Clayhead · 19/04/2011 16:57

Wow, assumed you must mean DLP - in Florida we ate lots of grilled meat, fresh salads and fruit and seafood and we always ate in Disney! With all the walking and swimming I lost weight.

JohnStuartMills · 19/04/2011 16:59

We stayed at the Davy Crokett self-catering in eurodisney. We also hired a car and drove to french supermarket (can't remember the name). I most enjoyed the food from the french supermarket. The class 1 fruit and veg is actually class one, not like beginning to rot and mould class 1 fruit and veg in tesco. Bakery was lovely, had lovely ham cooked in champagne. I guess that supermarche was like disney for me. We brought lunches in everyday but can't remember ever finding a really comfortable place to eat our packed lunches. We didn't have this lunch on the last day and bought disney food. Was yuck and extortionate pricewise.

silverfrog · 19/04/2011 17:00

we are just back (goingroundthebend - I started a thread on longhaul re: disney experiences, if you are interested - was a couple of weeks ago!) and I couldn't disagree more.

yes, there is lots of rubbish there (albeit very tasty rubbish)

there was also loads of good food too.

I had the most delicious bread I have ever eaten at our resort restaurant, had excellent fresh veg at all the sit-down meals we had.

the abundance of fresh fruit was brilliant.

it was repetitive for the dds with food intolerances, but tbh, we were so greatful to be anywhere that can cater for their extreme issues with ease, and they were over the moon to have so much (form their pov) choice, that it didn't bother us!

you need to research where to eat more, there is plenty to take your pick from.

JohnStuartMills · 19/04/2011 17:02

Forgot to add, I think all theme parks are probably like that. We went to Legoland last summer and food was yuck and extortionate also.

KatieScarlett2833 · 19/04/2011 17:02

Florida Food Log

Breakfast - Sizzlers all you can eat (includng fruit and cereals, but somehow always eat pancakes with maple syrup and corned beef hash)

Lunch - Pizza/Hot Dog/Burger (as in theme park and forgot to pre-book decent restaurant)

Dinner - Choose a restaurant, there are thousands, eat what you like!

Came home weighing exactly the same.

A small portion of wholemeal pasta served with a tomato based sauce is fine.

We don't eat the other stuff, tastes like glue. As does white rice.

I always think it's such a shame to be in the middle of France, eating terrible fast food.

The veggie choices are particularly bad, it's burger and chips or pasta dishes full of cream.

The only decent food we had last time we went, was tapas in the hotel bar.

TeaOneSugar · 19/04/2011 17:06

Oh, except the hotel breakfasts, which are actually OK.

I have friends who go to florida every year. they always lose weight due to amount of walking round parks, and eat really well, lots of fresh fish, grilled meat and salads. however they dont stay in the parks, and tend to have a large breakfast, snack on fruit during the day (whilst in the parks), then dinner out at different restaurants in the evening.

and surely with salads, you ask if they come with dressing, and if they do ask for one without?

dickcheeseandthecrackers · 19/04/2011 17:12

Not sure where you were eating in New York, but the food there is amazingly good.

YANBU i eat like shite but was disturbed in one of the disney parks when there was a restaurant that just served fried turkey legs. everyone was eating this giant turkey legs like king henry viii.

Insomnia11 · 19/04/2011 17:19

The food was nice in new York - plenty of choice and good quality, but the portions were sometimes massive to the point of almost putting me off eating it. Got the classic pastrami on rye and absolutely beautiful meat, but there was half a cow in it. I left most of it, and could have fed half the street but with portions like that you can see how people can gradually start to eat more and more and gain weight. Also what a waste of food. I know probably the idea is that people would have a doggy bag but I didn't really need several pounds of meat in my handbag. :)

scrappydappydoo · 19/04/2011 17:19

We went for 3 weeks last year and it was fab and we ate a balanced diet - some crappy but mostly good - you have to pick and choose your places to eat though. There are some great alternatives to burgers and fries - a variety of salads and wraps and stalls selling fruit. I have found the key to disney florida is to research and do loads of planning and then you can still have a relaxed holiday but be in the know...

WRT to the obesity issue what we found interesting was that there seemed to be no 'in between' there was either hugely fat or superfit - there didn't seem to be a middle ground..

Insomnia11 · 19/04/2011 17:22

If you think white pasta and rice tastes like glue you are eating the wrong stuff. Though I like some but not all whole versions. It really depends on what it is intended to accompany/go in.

tiredemma · 19/04/2011 17:23

I thought that the fresh fish at one of the restaurants in Downtown Disney was the very best that I had eaten anywhere

munstersmum · 19/04/2011 17:30

Yeah Maighd we tried one of those turkey legs - between 2 adults & 1 kid. Got to embrace cultural differences Wink Eugh never had anything so salty & weirdly it tasted more like ham. Was disturbed to see families woth young kids all holding one each.

goingroundthebend4 · 19/04/2011 17:37

erm hopes theres no Mn next year dd wants to try one of those turkey legs and she be 9 but looking around 6 and lol she wont want to share it .
