AIBU to say something to neighbours drilling and hammering at 9am this morning?

I was up and dressed but visitors we have staying were not, I could understand starting early if they were having huge building works done or had a building firm in but they are simply decorating their spare bedroom!

I may be being unreasonable but wanted to check out the general opinion before knocking on their door!

OP: I think you got your answer Grin I presume you didn't go round and knock on their door! :)

FWIW, I also think YABU. 9 am on a weekday is more than reasonable. Lucky friends, not to be working - but not everyone has the luxury of life stopping lying in when they are on holiday - and why should your negihbours put their own plans on hold just 'cos you have friends around who might or might not have been having a lie-in Hmm? If anything, they've done your friends a favour - get out there and enjoy the lovely sunshine! :)

No it's called being a doormat. 9am is not early and everybody needs to get on with their life too!

9am is NOT EARLY - so yes you should expect all manner of noise at 9am.

But on that basis you would only do DIY from 3pm to midnight thus pissing off your other neighbours. Sometimes things have to get done and they should be done at what is a reasonable time for the majority.

emptyshell · 19/04/2011 12:15

It's 9am... when do you suggest exactly they do their DIY? 5pm would disturb your dinner, 2pm would ruin Jezza Kyle... they've got to do it sometime - or are they meant never to ever decorate their spare bedroom because you don't view it as important?

The only reason we don't do DIY before 10am here is that we know our neighbour's son works nights and we came to that time which works for both of us if we've got to do any banging or clattering... amazing what talking civilly achieves.

prettybird · 19/04/2011 12:26

I don't know if you've noticed, but today is not a bank holiday Hmm

AlpinePony · 19/04/2011 12:27

YABU.

The world does not revolve around you.

Are you also rudely awoken by dustmen?

TandB · 19/04/2011 12:32

OP, so what time would be acceptable for them to begin a day's work?
9.30? 10? 10.30?

I almost hope you did go round:

[Knock knock]
Neighbour: Can I help you?
OP [outraged]: Do you know what time this is?
Neighbour [with a blank look]: Yes. 9am. Your point is?

cumbria81 · 19/04/2011 12:34

who on earth gets up after 8am on a weekday anyway?

Hatesponge · 19/04/2011 12:34

YABU. any time after 7.30am on a weekday is fine.

The dustmen point is a good one - ours come at any time from 6.30am onwards and make a huge amount of noise. However it doesn't annoy me (much). If you're that tired you can go back to sleep surely?

prettybird · 19/04/2011 12:47

Where we are, dustbins are now collected 7 days a week. In our street, the green (= general waste) bins are collected on a Saturday, any time between 7am and 7pm.

Cue much cursing at 7.15 in the morning and you hear them coming along the road so that dh has we have to get dressed to put them out, having forgotten to do so the night before..... (and there again, there are some weeks they don't get round to collecting them on the Saturday and it is early Sunday when they come round.....)

Bumpsadaisie · 19/04/2011 12:58

YABU. 9am on a weekday is fine. The majority of people are up and dressed by that time on a weekday.

catzcream · 19/04/2011 13:03

Good god. YABU.

HeadfirstForHalos · 19/04/2011 13:05

YABU 9am is perfectly normal and acceptable.

HeadfirstForHalos · 19/04/2011 13:07

Even 9am on a bank holiday is not U

CinnabarRed · 19/04/2011 13:09

Is this going to be one of those reverse AIBUs, where it turns out that the OP was the one who started doing DIY at 9AM?

52Girls · 19/04/2011 13:10

Your neighbours were probably chomping at the bit to start but decided to wait until a decent time. And 9am is a perfectly decent time.

trixymalixy · 19/04/2011 13:12

I think you might be right cinnabar as no one in their right mind would think this was being unreasonable.

I'd have a quiet curse to myself though.

sausagerollmodel · 19/04/2011 13:21

I would be annoyed if they were still going at 9pm but 9am is quite fair I think.

TandB · 19/04/2011 13:22

Has the OP gone back to bed? Grin

stillstanding · 19/04/2011 16:13

Probably. She had a VERY early start this morning! Grin
